Symmetry and Symmetry-Breaking Bifurcations in Fluid Dynamics (original) (raw)

This article explores the phenomenon of symmetry-breaking bifurcations in fluid dynamics, highlighting their significance across various nonlinear, nonequilibrium physical systems. It reviews the evolution of bifurcation theory, emphasizing the importance of equivariant bifurcation theory as a means to systematically study the role of symmetry in dynamical transitions. Applications of these theories to diverse fluid dynamics scenarios, including Taylor-Couette flow and binary fluid convection, are also discussed.
