Transport efficiency in roman Gaul can be modelled through three variables: the environment (land or river), vehicles and the drive force. Index costs can then be assigned to both land and river transport and used to compare 4 types of cargo for which we know the place of origin and the final destination: pottery, millstones, building stones and tiles. Our conclusion is that goods were produced and consumed locally as much as possible, and that in the case of extra regional trade, transportation cost does not seem to have been the key factor when choosing a supply centre. Goods quality, workshop efficiency, market knowledge and business network are certainly more important.
