Remarkable Base Effect in the Synthesis of Mono and Dinuclear Iridium(I) NHC Complexes
Organometallics, 2009
Several [(2-R 1 -1,3-phenylene)bis(methylene)]bis(1-R 2 -imidazolium) salts, of general formula R2 (CH imid ∧ CR 1∧ CH imid )X 2 , have been synthesized by classical imidazole quaternization and halide metathesis reactions. The reactions of Et (CH imid ∧ CH ∧ CH imid )(PF 6 ) 2 (1), Et (CH imid ∧ CH ∧ CH imid )I 2 (2), Mes (CH imid ∧ CBr ∧ CH imid )-(PF 6 ) 2 (3), and Me (CH imid ∧ CBr ∧ CH imid )(PF 6 ) 2 (4) with [Ir(µ-Cl)(cod)] 2 (0.5 equiv) in the presence of Cs 2 CO 3 or NEt 3 as a weak base (1.2 equiv) yielded the mono-NHC complexes [IrCl(cod) Et

The reaction of the cyclometalated chloro-bridged iridium(III) dimers [(ppy) 2 Ir(μ-Cl)] 2 (ppyH = 2-phenyl pyridine) and [(tpy) 2 Ir(μ-Cl)] 2 (tpyH = 2-p-tolylpyridine) with 3,5-diphenylpyrazole (Ph 2 PzH) in the presence of sodium methoxide resulted in the formation of heterobridged dimers [(ppy) 2 Ir(μ-OH)(μ-Ph 2 Pz)Ir(ppy) 2 ] (1) and [(tpy) 2 Ir(μ-OH)(μ-Ph 2 Pz)Ir(tpy) 2 ] (2). Interestingly, the reaction of [(ppy) 2 Ir(μ-Cl)] 2 with 3(5)-methyl-5(3)-phenylpyrazole (PhMePzH) afforded both a heterobridged dimer, [(ppy) 2 Ir(μ-OH)(μ-PhMePz)Ir(ppy) 2 ] (3), and the monomer [(ppy) 2 Ir-(PhMePz)Cl] (4). The compound [(ppy) 2 Ir(PhMePz)OH] (5) containing a terminal OH was obtained in a hydrolysis reaction involving 4, sodium methoxide, and PhMePzH. Complexes 1−5 were characterized by X-ray crystallography and electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry. All of the complexes are luminescent at room temperature in their dichloromethane solutions. The luminescence of the dinuclear complexes is characterized by a single structureless band centered at λ max = 550 nm (1 and 3) and 546 nm (2). The emission spectra of the mononuclear complexes 4 and 5 display vibronic structures with their λ max values at 497 nm (4) and 513 nm (5). In each case, the main emission bands are accompanied by shoulder bands at 526 (4) and 534 nm (5). The quantum yields, calculated with reference to [Ir(ppy) 2 (bpy)]PF 6 (Φ CH 3 CN = 0.0622), range from 0.11 to 0.17 for the dinuclear complexes and 0.045 to 0.048 for the mononuclear complexes. The lifetimes of the emission are in the microsecond region, suggesting the phosphorescent nature of the emission. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were performed on complexes 1 and 4 in the ground state to gain insight into the structural, electronic, and photophysical properties. Electrochemical studies on complexes 1−3 showed the presence of two consecutive one-electron-oxidation processes, assigned as the stepwise oxidation of the two Ir III centers, i.e., Ir III −Ir III /Ir III −Ir IV and Ir III −Ir IV /Ir IV −Ir IV couples, respectively. The monomers displayed singleoxidation peaks. No reduction process was observed within the solvent cathodic potential limit.
Synthesis and catalytic applications of Ru and Ir complexes containing N,O-chelating ligand
Journal of Organometallic Chemistry, 2020
A series of monometallic complexes (Ru 1-3 , Ir 1-3) which have N,O-chelating ligand (pyrazine-2carboxylate (1), pyridine-2-carboxylate (2), quinoline carboxylate(3) and bimetallic complexes (Ru 4,5 , Ir 4,5) bridged by pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylate (4) and imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate(5) were synthesized and characterized by 1 H-, 13 C NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of Ir 2 was determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes (Ru 1-5 , Ir 1-5) were applied to investigate the electronic and steric effect of ligand in their catalytic activities in transfer hydrogenation and alpha(α)-alkylation reaction of ketones with alcohols. The activities of iridium complexes (Ir 1-5) were much more efficient than ruthenium complexes (Ru 1-5). The highest activity for both reactions was observed for the complex (Ir 2) with pyridine-2-carboxylate. The Ir hydride species was monitored for both reactions.

Iridium(III) complexes with a trifunctional pincer ligand containing protic N-heterocyclic carbene (pNHC), pyridine, and imine donor groups were obtained in two sequential steps: (i) protonation of 2-(1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)ethyl)-6-(1-imidazolyl)pyridine (L CH ; the superscript specifies the position of the tautomerizable H atom in the imidazole ring) with HBF 4 •Et 2 O to give the imidazolium salt [HL CH ] + [BF 4 ] − (protonation always occurs at the imidazole N atom) and (ii) metalation of the latter with [Ir(cod)(μ-Cl)] 2 to give the hydrido pincer complex [Ir(H)(Cl)(NCMe){L NHκ 3 N imine ,N Py ,C NHC }] + [BF 4 ] − (3 + [BF 4 ] −). Substitution of MeCN in 3 + [BF 4 ] − by treatment with triisopropylphosphine gave the analogue [Ir(H)(Cl)P(i-Pr) 3 {L NH-κ 3 N imine ,N Py ,C NHC }] + [BF 4 ] − (4 + [BF 4 ] −). Chloride abstraction from 3 + [BF 4 ] − by AgBF 4 gave [Ir(H)(NCMe) 2 {L NH-κ 3 N imine ,N Py ,C NHC }] 2+ [BF 4 − ] 2 (5 2+ [BF 4 − ] 2). The centrosymmetric dinuclear Ir(III) complex [Ir(H)(NCMe){μ-(L CH −H)-κ 3 N imine ,N Py ,C2,κN3}] 2 2+ [B-(C 6 F 5) 3 F − ] 2 (6 2+ [B(C 6 F 5) 3 F − ] 2) was obtained after deprotonation of 5 2+ [BF 4 − ] 2 with KO-t-Bu, followed by addition of B(C 6 F 5) 3. It contains two Ir pincer moieties, each with a N imine ,N Py ,C2 donor set, which are connected by the Ir−N bonds involving the imidazolide rings, leading to a μ-C,N bridging mode for the latter. Remarkably, all of the donor atoms in the tetradentate bridging chelating ligands are chemically different. The molecular structures of 3 + [BF 4 ] − •CH 2 Cl 2 , 4 + [BF 4 ] − •CH 2 Cl 2 , 5 2+ [BF 4 − ] 2 •2CH 2 Cl 2 , and 6 2+ [B(C 6 F 5) 3 F − ] 2 •4CH 2 Cl 2 have been determined by X-ray diffraction.
