Introduction: Gingivitis, halitosis and cavities are common dental problems, which are often unnoticed until they start giving worrisome trouble. Oral hygiene involves keeping the teeth and oral cavity clean and free from odour. School children frequently prefer to use raw sugars, candies etc throughout the day making it important to educate the school age children regarding oral hygiene practices. The aim of the study is to assess the effectiveness of learning package on knowledge of the school-age children regarding oral hygiene practices. Methods: An experimental study with pre test post test control group design was used to assess the effectiveness of learning package on knowledge of the 6-12 aged school-age children regarding oral hygiene practices. Simple random sampling technique (lottery method) was utilized to select 60 school-age children (allotted 30 in each group by odd-even method). Socio demographic profile and knowledge questionnaire related to dental practices were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The results of this study shows that pre-test knowledge score of the school-age children in the both experimental and control group had no significant difference. Post-test knowledge score was significantly different in the experimental group (n=24, 80%) as compared to control group (n=10, 33%). The significant difference in the experimental group between pre-test and post-test score was 50%, due to the learning package. Conclusion: The findings of the present study suggested that learning package was very effective in improving knowledge of the school-age children regarding oral hygiene practices. Study recommended that all health authorities and school administrators should strengthen their work for raising awareness and translation of sound knowledge about risk factors of poor oral health on children to the parents, school teachers, and children themselves.

Materials and methods This cross-sectional study, approved by the Institutional Ethical Committee, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha, has been done according to the STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology) checklist. A study based on certain questions was carried out amongst the school-going children of Central India, especially the Vidarbha region. A total of 250 schoolgoing children were enrolled in the study. A survey based on a questionnaire was carried out among the study participants in the age group of 12-16 years of age, which consisted of questions pertaining to knowledge of oral health and hygiene maintenance. The program consisted of presentation slides, roleplays, and demonstrations for inculcating the knowledge. Result A total of 200 study participants responded to the questionnaire. Overall, the baseline mean score of knowledge with scale was 2.80 ± 1.73 SD, which after the intervention was observed to be 10.70 ± 0.54 SD, which showed an increase. There was an aptly 60.4% increase in test scores related to oral health after the specific oral health inculcation program based on questionnaire execution which was statistically significant (p<0.001). Oral diseases qualify as major public health problem owing to their high prevalence and incidence in all regions of the world (WHO Report 2003). India is no exception and due to its large population size, the absolute burden of oral diseases is immense. [1] The irony of the problem is that most oral diseases are preventable to a great extent, but unfortunately, adequate efforts are lacking in that direction. The etiology of oral diseases can easily be related to various known risk factors and therefore can easily be controlled. The model for risk factor approach in the promotion of oral health as suggested by the World Health Organization emphasizes the role of modifiable risk behaviors such as oral hygiene practices, diet, tobacco, and alcohol abuse (WHO Report 2003). To tackle the overwhelming problem of oral diseases, effectively targeting modifiable risk behaviors through oral health education along with concurrent curative procedures can have a significant impact in reducing the burden of oral diseases in a country like India with a large population size. Oral health education, an important component of oral health promotion, has been considered an essential part of dental health services. [2] It aims to promote oral health primarily by providing information to improve awareness, leading to adoption of a healthier
