Financial securities transactions: a study of logistic process performance improvements (original) (raw)

Accounting Management and Information Technologies, 1998
Previous research suggested that the performance of interorganisational processes can be influenced by eight factors: stakeholders, competition, information technology, market network design, perceived risk, process design, information, and trust. This paper specifically focuses on the consequences of market network redesign for interorganisational processes. A distinction is made between transaction oriented electronic markets and processing oriented electronic markets. Case studies in the financial securities industry show that an open market structure with many participants can be successful for complex transaction processes. Support of at least several stakeholders is crucial for the success of an electronic market.

Efficient Systems for the Securities Transaction Industry- A Framework for the European Union
2003
This paper provides a framework for the securities transaction industry in the EU to understand the functions performed, the institutions involved and the parameters concerned that shape market and ownership structure. Of particular interest are microeconomic incentives of the industry players that can be in contradiction to social welfare. We evaluate the three functions and the strategic parameters the boundary decision, the communication standard employed and the governance implemented along the lines of three efficiency concepts. By structuring the main factors that influence these concepts and by describing the underlying trade-offs among them, we provide insight into a highly complex industry. Applying our framework, the paper describes and analyzes three consistent systems for the securities transaction industry. We point out that one of the systems, denoted as ’contestable monopolies’, demonstrates a superior overall efficiency while it might be the most sensitive in terms o...
Using information technologies to restore investor trust

Information Systems and IT Architectures for Securities Trading
Electronic finance (e-finance) is mainly concerned with the automation of traditional activities in the finance domain and their associated processes. In particular, trading has become more and more a global activity because of the recent technological developments that have facilitated the instantaneous exchange of information, securities and funds worldwide. Trading decisions have also become more complex as they involve the cooperation of different participants interacting across wide geographical boundaries and different time zones. Although traditional communication media (such as phone, email and fax) are steadily being replaced by automated systems, there are still many areas that require human intervention. The evolutions in IT middleware and integration technologies (particularly those based on the Internet) are providing endless opportunities for addressing such gaps (Banks 2001). One of the first challenges for software architects and IT professionals is getting sufficien...
Business process modelling for a central securities depository
Business Process Management Journal, 2008
Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a business process modelling approach based on: the incorporation of the best practices in the industry; higher reliability standards for operation; real-time settlement; improved security; and transparency in the process and information handling. Design/methodology/approach-This novel process modelling considers three major phases. First, devising a new operating model covering the following main aspects: core services, secondary services, support services, common processes for all services and, system interaction with the national and international financial markets. Second, modelling of the redesigned business processes. Third, construction of a new system. Findings-Significant improvements in the five attributes mentioned above were achieved by incorporating a straight-through continuous processing model with a single entry and exit channel, a new account structure, an intelligent pre-settlement process, and by stressing transparency in every process (system log). Research limitations/implications-The illustrated methodology represents close to 10,000 work-hours of research and consultancy at the Mexican central securities depository-CSD (INDEVAL). Although, arithmetic results are case specific, insight knowledge can be easily adapted on other CSD worldwide. Practical implications-International standards as well as the best international practices were incorporated in the new system. Hence, the operation of INDEVAL will be in the leading edge of financial systems. Originality/value-The present contribution illustrates a comprehensive redesign of a complex business environment. One of the most innovative proposals for this new model was the new pre-settlement module which optimizes the settlement process. Moreover, the incorporation of a straight-through continuous processing model for a securities depository provides a transparent and efficient operation for a CSD.
Operations in Financial Services: Processes, Technologies, and Risks
Foundations and Trends® in Technology, Information and Operations Management, 2017
This monograph is an attempt to establish a framework for Operations in Financial Services as a research area from an Operations Management perspective. Operations in Financial Services has not developed itself yet as a well-defined research area within the Operations Management community. It has been touched upon by researchers from various different disciplines, including Operations Management, Statistics, Information Technology, Finance, and Marketing. However, each discipline has a different perspective on what the important issues are and the various disciplines are often at odds with one another. This monograph has been written from an Operations Management perspective.
Co-operatively re-engineering a financial services information supply chain: A case study
Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences / Revue Canadienne des Sciences de l'Administration, 2009
This paper presents a case study of the cooperative design, development, and implementation of an XBRLenabled interorganizational system (IOS) by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, the Reserve Bank of Australia (central bank), and the Australian Bureau of Statistics to revolutionize reporting by fi nancial institutions in Australia. The fi ndings illustrate that the complexity of data consumption patterns drove increased interdependence within the fi nancial information supply chain requiring the cooperative development of context sensitive data exchanges and commodity-like IT infrastructures. The paper concludes that the cooperative model to IOS development exhibited here is likely to be more suited to the development of systems for fi nancial information supply chains than the hub and spoke model characteristic of IOS in other sectors.
Handbook of Financial Intermediation and Banking
2008
The growth of financial intermediation research has yielded a host of questions that have pushed "design" issues to the fore even as the boundary between financial intermediation and corporate finance has blurred. This volume presents review articles on six major topics that are connected by information-theoretic tools and characterized by valuable perspectives and important questions for future research. Touching upon a wide range of issues pertaining to the designs of securities, institutions, trading mechanisms and markets, industry structure, and regulation, this volume will encourage bold new efforts to shape financial intermediaries in the future. * Original review articles offer valuable perspectives on research issues appearing in top journals * Twenty articles are grouped by six major topics, together defining the leading research edge of financial intermediation * Corporate finance researchers will find affinities in the tools, methods, and conclusions featured i...
