Diffusion of glucose solution through fibrous tissues: in-vitro optical and weight measurements (original) (raw)
2000, Saratov Fall Meeting '99: Optical Technologies in Biophysics and Medicine
The diffusion of glucose solutions with various concentrations through human sciera and cerebral membrane in vitro was studied. The dynamics of this process was monitored by time-dependent weight and optical measurements. Glucose administration induces the diffusion of matter and as a result the equalization of the refractive indices of collagen fibrils and ground material, and corresponding changes of transmittance spectra of fibrous tissue. Transmittance spectra of the human scleral and cerebral membrane samples impregnated by glucose were measured. Investigation of diffusion process in scleral samples, previously dried and swelled in distillated water was performed. Experimental results are presented.

SPIE Proceedings, 2000
Results of experimental and theoretical study of the optical properties of the eye sclera controlled by administration of osmotically active chemical, such as glucose, are presented. Glucose administration induces the diffusion of matter and as a result the equalization of the refractive indices of collagen fibrils and base material, and corresponding changes of transmittance spectra of scleral tissue. Transmittance spectra of the human scleral samples impregnated by glucose were measured. The significant increase of transmittance under action of osmotic liquid was observed. The diffusion coefficient of glucose within scleral tissue was estimated; the average value is 3.45. 1O 4.59. iO cm2/sec. The results are general and can be used to describe many other fibrous tissues impregnated by osmotically active chemical agents.

Concentration effect on the diffusion of glucose in ocular tissues
Optics and Lasers in Engineering, 2008
In this study, optical coherence tomography (OCT) was utilized in the functional imaging of glucose diffusion through scleral tissues. Permeability coefficients for different concentrations of glucose were quantified nondestructively. Obtained results indicate an inverse proportionality between the permeability coefficient and the concentration of the analyte in epithelial tissues: in-depth diffusion of solutions with lower glucose concentration was faster than those with a higher concentration. The permeability coefficient decreased from (1.6770.17) Â 10 À5 cm/s of 10% glucose solution to (5.0870.23) Â 10 À6 cm/s of 25% glucose solution. The dependence of the permeability on the concentration of hyperosmotic analytes could potentially be used in various basic science and clinical fields, such as optical clearing of tissues and cells as well as in clinical pharmacology.
The influence of glucose concentration upon the transport of light in tissue-simulating phantoms
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 1995
The effect of glucose upon the transport of light in tissue-simulating phantom is shown and its possible application for non-invasive glucose monitoring in diabetic patients is discussed. The aim of this paper is to investigate the physical background of this effect The presence of glucose in an aqueous solution increases its refractive index and therefore has an influence upon the scattering properties of partides suspended in solution. Fxperime@ data on the effect of glucose upon the sanering coefficient and the phase function of aqueous suspensions of spherical polystyrene particles are presented for near-infrared wavelengths and compared to values predicted by Mie theory. The subsequent effect upon light uansport in multiple scattering, tissue-simulating phantoms is demonstrated experimentally in a slab geometly and theoretically by applying diffusion theory. It is furthermore shown that optional measurements in the frequency domain allow changes of absorption and scattering coefficient to be separately determined. The possible magnitude of this glucose effect in tissue in vivo is discussed.
Optical clearing of human eye sclera under the action of glucose solution
Progress in Biomedical Optics and Imaging - Proceedings of SPIE, 2007
We present experimental results of investigation of the optical properties of the human eye sclera controlled by administration of osmotically active chemical, such as 40%-glucose solution. Administration of the chemical agent induces diffusion of matter and as a result equalization of the refractive indices of collagen and ground material. Results of the experimental study of influence of the glucose solution on the absorption and scattering properties of human sclera are presented. In vitro reflectance and transmittance spectra of the human sclera samples were measured by commercially available spectrophotometer CARY-2415 in the spectral range from 400 to 1800 nm. The reduced scattering coefficient of human sclera samples is significantly decreased under action of the osmotical solution were demonstrated.
Glucose and Mannitol Diffusion in Human Dura Mater
Biophysical Journal, 2003
An in vitro experimental study of the control of the human dura mater optical properties at administration of aqueous solutions of glucose and mannitol has been presented. The significant increase of the dura mater optical transmittance under action of immersion liquids has been demonstrated. Diffusion coefficients of glucose and mannitol in the human dura mater tissue at 208C have been estimated as (1.63 6 0.29) 3 10 ÿ6 cm 2 /s and as (1.31 6 0.41) 3 10 ÿ6 cm 2 /s, respectively. Experiments show that administration of immersion liquids allows for the effective control of tissue optical characteristics that make dura mater more transparent, thereby increasing the ability of light penetration through the tissue.
Ex vivo optical measurements of glucose diffusion kinetics in native and diabetic mouse skin
Journal of biophotonics, 2015
The aim of this study was to estimate the glucose diffusion coefficients ex vivo in skin of mice with diabetes induced in vivo by alloxan in comparison to non-diabetic mice. The temporal dependences of collimated transmittance of tissue samples immersed in glucose solutions were measured in the VIS-NIR spectral range to quantify the glucose diffusion/permeability coefficients and optical clearing efficiency of mouse skin. The average thickness of intact healthy and diabetic skin was 0.023 ± 0.006 cm and 0.019 ± 0.005 cm, respectively. Considerable differences in optical and kinetic properties of diabetic and non-diabetic skin were found: clearing efficiency was 1.5-fold better and glucose diffusivity was 2-fold slower for diabetic skin. Experimental Setup for measuring collimated transmittance spectra of mouse skin samples.
Study of osmotical liquids diffusion within sclera
We present experimental results of investigation of the optical properties of the human eye sciera controlled by administration of osmotically active chemical, such as glucose solution with various concentrations. Administration of chemical agent induces diffusion of matter and as a result equalization of the refractive indices of collagen and ground material. Results of experimental study of influence of osmotical liquid (glucose solution) on reflectance and transmittance spectra of human sciera are presented. In vitro reflectance and transmittance spectra of the human sciera samples were investigated by commercially available spectrophotometer CARY-241 5 . The significant increasing of the transmittance and decreasing of the reflectance of human sclera samples under action of osmotical solutions were demonstrated. Results of our study show that the degree ofthe sclera samples clearing is increased with increasing ofthe chemical agent concentration in solution. The diffusion coefficients of glucose solution with various concentrations within scleral tissue was estimated.
