Four strains of a novel ascomycetous yeast species were isolated from flowers in Iran and China. Phylogenetic analysis of the ITS region (including 5.8S rDNA) and the LSU rRNA gene D1/D2 domains sequences indicated that these strains belong to the Starmerella clade and show divergence from previously described species in this clade. Growth reactions on carbon and nitrogen sources were similar to those observed in the related species of the Starmerella clade. Sexual reproduction was not observed after mating tests on different sporulation media. Based on physiological characteristics and phylogeny of rDNA sequences, the new species is most closely related to Candida (iter. nom. Starmerella) powellii and Candida (iter. nom. Starmerella) floricola. It is therefore assigned to the genus Starmerella and described as Starmerella orientalis f.a., sp. nov. (Type strain, SAM09T = IBRC-M 30204T = CBS 14142T). The MycoBank accession number of this new species is MB 814379.

Starmerella aceti f.a., sp. nov., an ascomycetous yeast species isolated from fungus garden of the leafcutter ant Acromyrmex balzani

A novel yeast species was recovered from the fungus garden of the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex balzani (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The growth of the novel yeast species is limited by its ability to metabolize only a few carbon and nitrogenous compounds. A remarkable characteristic of this strain is the vigorous growth in 1 % acetic acid. Sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene showed that the novel species belongs to the Starmerella clade and is phenotypically and genetically divergent from currently recognized species in this clade. Described here as Starmerella aceti f.a., sp. nov., it differs by 37 nucleotide substitutions in the D1/D2 region from Starmerella jinningensis CBS 11864(T), the most closely related species. The type strain of Starmerella aceti sp. nov. is TO 125(T) ( = CBMAI 1594(T) = CBS 13086(T)).

Candida alocasiicola sp. nov., Candida hainanensis sp. nov., Candida heveicola sp. nov. and Candida musiphila sp. nov., novel anamorphic, ascomycetous yeast species isolated from plants

In a taxonomic study on the ascomycetous yeasts isolated from plant materials collected in tropical forests in Yunnan and Hainan Provinces, southern China, four strains isolated from tree sap (YJ2ET) and flowers (YF9ET, YWZH3CT and YYF2AT) were revealed to represent four undescribed yeast species. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the large subunit (26S) rRNA gene D1/D2 domain sequences showed that strain YJ2ET was located in a clade together with Candida haemulonii and C. pseudohaemulonii. Strain YF9ET was most closely related to C. azyma and strain YWZH3CT to C. sorbophila and C. spandovensis. Strain YYF2AT was clustered in a clade containing small-spored Metschnikowia species and related anamorphic Candida species. The new strains differed from their closely related described species by more than 10% mismatches in the D1/D2 domain. No sexual states were observed for the four strains on various sporulation media. The new species are therefore assigned to the genus Candida and described as Candida alocasiicola sp. nov. (type strain, YF9ET = AS 2.3484T = CBS 10702T), Candida hainanensis sp. nov. (type strain, YYF2AT = AS 2.3478T = CBS 10696T), Candida heveicola sp. nov. (type strain, YJ2ET = AS 2.3483T = CBS 10701T) and Candida musiphila sp. nov. (type strain, YWZH3CT = AS 2.3479T = CBS 10697T).
