At least four factors affect pupils' understanding of the nature of science: teachers' specialization in different science areas (physics, chemistry, and biology), gender issues, teaching experience in elementary school environments, and the perspectives of acquiring necessary knowledge. This study is the introduction part of a research project which will be initiated soon. Four elementary science teachers participated in the study. The results reveal that participants' views of the aspects of nature of science are not solely diverged, based on their major disciplines, but there exist significant distinctions according to gender differences.
The Levels of Scientific Disciplines
It is the aim of this paper to develop and defend an interpretation of level of scientific discipline within the truth-maker framework. In particular, I exploit the mereological relation of proper parthood, which is integral to truth-maker semantics, in order to provide an account of scientific level.
Differentiation of scientific disciplines: Causes and consequences 2003
The scientific discipline as the primary unit of internal differentiation of science is an invention of nineteenth century society. There exists a long semantic prehistory of disciplina as a term for the ordering of knowledge for purposes of instruction in schools and universities. But, only the nineteenth century establishes real disciplinary communication systems. They are based on specialization of scientists, on role differentiation in the organizations of science, the emergence of standard forms of scientific publication and the rise of the research imperative which demands an incessant search for novelties. All these structural changes coalesce to the disciplinary community as a new type of communication system in science. After having been established, the discipline func¬tions as the unit of structure formation in the social system of science; in systems of higher education, as subject domain for teaching and learning in schools; and finally as designation of occupational and professional roles. Although processes of differentiation of science have been going on ever since, the scientific discipline as a basic unit of structure formation is stabilized by these plural roles in different functional contexts of modern society. Finally, each individual discipline is embedded into an internal environment of other disciplines. The continuous mutual observation and interaction of these disciplines is the most important factor in the dynamics of modern science.
Disciplines and the Categorization of Scientific Truth

For the general audience, Wikipedia is considered the source of “truth,” especially for scientific knowledge. While studies of Wikipedia usually focus around the accuracy of the knowledge within it, few studies have explored its hierarchy and categorization. This study aims to describe how scientific information is organized into disciplines in Wikipedia. I take as a case study the Hebrew Wikipedia () and examine the representation and interrelations of five social sciences: sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, and psychology. I gather data from Wikipedia entries categorized under each of these disciplines and create a network that contains categories and subcategories derived from these entries. Using network analysis techniques, I estimate the strength of the relations between the disciplines. In the case of disciplinary representative agency, individual and organizational actors are committed to the reflexive interests of a discipline and act on their behalf. This paper explores the essential forms and arenas in which this type of agency is exercised and discusses the relevance of some recent trends in science and higher education for the collective agency of disciplines.
Decoding the disciplines – A pilot study at the University of Liège (Belgium)

This paper reports on a first attempt to apply the two first stages of the “Decoding the disciplines” framework (Pace, 2017) at the University of Liège (Belgium). In this context, 7 professors volunteered to reflect, through a structured process, upon “bottlenecks” in their courses, with the help of IFRES’ (Institute for Training and Research in Higher Education) pedagogical advisers. This pilot delivered contrasted observations: while participants granted value to their exposure to this approach, especially in terms of enhanced awareness of possible discrepancies between what experts and newcomers in the field might consider as obvious, none of them activated the possibility offered to tackle the identified bottlenecks, according to the systematic approach (stages 3-7) suggested by the framework. The paper presents the pedagogical setting, analyses the interviews of participants and the outcomes of the project, outlines explanations for its results, and shares some lessons learnt.
