ABSTRACT Obesity is capturing the whole world very rapidly. Both medical community and common people are aware of the health risks associated with obesity. Different phytochemicals present in medicinal plant parts have antiobesity properties. The antiobesity properties of medicinal plants are exhibited by different mechanisms. There are different studies for exactly knowing the cause of animal obesity. A new scientific approach about the present situation of this disease may initiate additional research in the field to assess the contribution of phytochemicals in obesity and possibly to prevent or treat the widespread epidemic of obesity. This review will try to focus and summarize on the main findings available in the literature regarding the effect of different medicinal plants and their extracts on human obesity. In this paper we review the present knowledge in the field as this may be of importance to those who deal with research on antiobesity for the benefit of the common people. Obesity has emerged as a global health crisis, contributing to numerous comorbidities including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic inflammation. Although lifestyle modifications are recommended to prevent obesity, the increase of obesity in last years has revealed the importance of drug research. While bariatric surgery remains an effective approach, the limited number of approved pharmacotherapies for obesity necessitates further investigation into novel therapeutic agents. Currently, there has been growing interest in exploring the potential of plant extracts in the treatment of obesity. Phytoextracts, derived from a variety of botanical sources, have attracted considerable attention due to their therapeutic properties and perceived lower risk profile compared to synthetic pharmaceuticals. These extracts often contain bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and alkaloids, which have been extensively studied for their anti-obesity effects. Research indicates that certain plant extracts can modulate weight control by influencing metabolic processes, overall health, and lipid metabolism. The integration of herbal extracts into obesity treatment regimens offers a holistic approach to health, presenting a natural alternative to conventional medicine. Moreover, plant extracts often exhibit pleiotropic effects, targeting multiple pathways involved in the pathogenesis and progression of obesity. This multifaceted mechanism holds promise for enhancing clinical outcomes while minimizing the risks associated with monotherapy. However, despite the evident potential, further research is essential to elucidate the precise mechanisms of action, optimize dosage regimens, and evaluate the longterm safety and efficacy of these interventions.

Prevalence of obesity has been increased worldwide over the most recent three years. Lack of physical activity and dietary intake are the major factors contributing obesity. The weight gain and energy imbalance are influenced by many factors such as hormone balance, age, sex and lifestyle modification. High calorie intake than required are deposited as a fat in our body it leads to weight gain. Many drugs designed to treat obesity such as orlistat, sibutramine and metformin but these drugs cause so many side effects. There is a need for the alternative therapy due to side effects of these synthetic drugs. The present study was designed how the medicinal plants used to treat obesity with least side effects. Herbal remedies such as citrus paradisi, Glycyyrhiza glabra, Alternanthera sessilis, Benicasa hispida, punica grantum Solanum melongena, cinnamaldehyde, Tamarindus indica, Piper nigram, Allium sativus, which contain many bioactive compounds such as Naringin, Chlorogenic acid, Gallic acid that plays crucial role in treatment of obesity without side effects.

Obesity is arising as a global pandemic throughout the world. Over the past few decades, obesity has tripled worldwide, creating an alarming situation. The majority of people nowadays are suffering from obesity and overweight. It affects health of people of all age groups, ethnicity, gender, and sex, and is linked to a sedentary lifestyle of people, poor eating habits, and disturbed sleeping patterns. In the present scenario, obesity is a challenging health problem and its prevalence along with comorbidities are on the rise around the world. According to world health organization and organisation for economic cooperation and development epidemiology reports, overweight and obesity are the fifth foremost causes of deaths globally. The increasing rate of obesity is becoming a mammoth problem which enormously affects an individual's quality of life. The conventional therapy of obesity mainly involves synthetic moieties and surgical procedures, which has many harmful side effects and chances of recurrence with severity. Hence, the Present review is a metanalysis of all the available data on the use of the plants with their biological source, active phytochemical constituents and a probable mechanism of action as natural anti-obesity agents. The metanalysis of data during the period of 2000-2018 was performed with the help of scientific data search engine National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI/PubMed). This data reveals the need and scope of further research in the development of new natural phytoconstituents for the management of obesity.

Plants with Potential Use on Obesity and Its Complications

Obesity is the most prevalent nutritional disease and a growing public health problem worldwide. This disease is a causal component of the metabolic syndrome related with abnormalities, including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, inflammation, among others. There are anti-obesity drugs, affecting the fundamental processes of the weight regulation; however they have shown serious side effects, which outweigh their beneficial effects. Most recent studies on the treatment of obesity and its complications have focused on the potential role of different plants preparation that can exert a positive effect on the mechanisms involved in this pathology. For instance, anti-obesity effects of green tea and its isolated active principles have been reported in both in vitro (cell cultures) and in vivo (animal models) that possess healthy effects, decreasing adipose tissue through reduction of adipocytes differentiation and proliferation. A positive effect in lipid profile, and lipid and carbohydrates metabolisms were demonstrated as well. In addition, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities were studied. However, the consumption of green tea and its products is not that common in Western countries, where other plants with similar bioactivity predominate; nevertheless, the effect extension has not been analyzed in depth, despite of their potential as alternative treatment for obesity. In this review the anti-obesity potential and reported mechanisms of action of diverse plants such as: Camellia sinensis, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Hypericum perforatum, Persea americana, Phaseolus vulgaris, Capsicum annuum, Rosmarinus officinalis, Ilex paraguariensis, Citrus paradisi, Citrus limon, Punica granatum, Aloe vera, Taraxacum officinale and Arachis hypogaea is summarized. We consider the potential of these plants as natural alternative treatments of some metabolic alterations associated with obesity.
