Abstract
This chapter summarizes and discusses the reliability and validity of five measures of family assessment. Reliability is related to the consistency of a measure and is especially important when assessing measurement tools that will be used in clinical practice to guide the clinical decision-making process (Springer & Franklin, 2003). Reliability is established through four methods: test-retest, alternate form, split-half, and internal consistency. Validity addresses whether a tool measures what it is intended to measure.
