This qualitative study aimed to unveil the authenticity of the being nurse-professor in the nursing care teaching practice. The study applied the theoretical-methodological framework of Heideggerian hermeneutics. The strategy used to capture meaning was the phenomenological interview carried out with 11 professors. The organization and analysis of data allowed for the unfolding of the authenticity of the being nurse-professor, revealing that both are authentic in their professional careers and, as such, teach and learn in a different way. This feature makes a difference in the nursing care teaching practice. When led to states of anguish, they seek to follow other roads in order to ratify their responsibility in the care teaching process. Through their freedom to choose their paths, they are made unique beings and thus reveal their authentic existence.

This study aimed to analyze how nurses represent their role as nursing academics and their conceptions, strategies and feelings involved in teaching-learning and research in nursing. A qualitative study was conducted. To achieve this goal, a semi-structured interview was carried out with seven nurses who worked as teachers and researchers at a university in Barcelona, Spain. The data were analyzed through categories validated in a previous study with the support of The Atlas Ti program. The results evidenced that nurses are less equipped to develop the researcher role, and that the profession is not justified without a close relationship between nursing theory and practice. The nursing academics look for a balance between teaching and research and they also wish to promote the development of models and theories in their own discipline. What keeps nurses in nursing: A Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological study
2009
Each person on my committee had a unique expertise and perspective that blended beautifully into the planning, implementation and synthesis of this study. Dr. Ellen D. Baer read every word, line, and paragraph for over a year. She is a respected member and vanguard scholar who has improved my level of critical thinking and scholarly writing in a quantum leap. I appreciate that she encouraged my musings at crucial times to inspire my creativity, but did reel me back on task frequently. I have deep gratitude and admiration for her. Dr. Charlotte D. Barry's expertise and knowledge in Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology gave me the stamina and vigor to remain in and return to "the circle" by re-listening, re-reading, rewriting , rethinking , re-saying, reflecting, over and over again as I circled, re-circled, cycled, recycled , then spiraled and re-spiraled, waiting for the miracle to happen. It did. I was finished. I appreciate how she honored and respected my personhood. Dr. Mary M. Cameron has opened my eyes wider to the study of human culture and development in a historical and comparative approach as it applies to the culture of nurses. I have gained a greater appreciation of the culture of nurses in healthcare through her guidance. I wish her and her family safe travels to Nepal for her Ayurvedic medicine Fulbright research. v Many other caring people have helped me knowingly and unknowingly along the way. My family, friends, students, doctoral classmates, faculty and staff at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing nurtured my growth. Particularly, Dean Anne Boykin, Dr.
Nursing teachers in clinical training areas: a phenomenological focus
… Latino-Americana de …, 2011
During theoretical and practical activities in clinical training areas, nursing teachers provide the bases needed for the development of future professionals. The goal is to understand the experience of nursing teachers with nursing students in clinical training areas. Therefore, a phenomenological qualitative method was chosen, and Martin Heidegger's philosophical framework was used to support data analysis. Five faculty from a Chilean university participated in the study. The analysis permitted discovering the following themes: being a faculty at the hospital, contact with nurse practitioners and being a faculty in care teaching. The study demonstrated that teaching/care integration is a constructive element that facilitates the teaching and learning process, aiming to prepare nursing professionals who incorporate the bases of authentic care into their activities.

Sensibility in the Relations and Interactions of Teaching and Learning to Be and Do Nursing
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem, 2010
This qualitative study focused on proxemic feelings and feelings of detachment and ambiguity among professors-nurses concerning their experiences. This study aimed to reveal the meanings of sensibility held by being-professor-nurse in teaching and learning to be and do nursing. The theoretical-philosophical support is based on Merleau-Ponty's existential phenomenological approach and the hermeneutics phenomenology of Paul Ricoeur was used. Nineteen professors-nurses from a Higher Education institution in the South of Brazil were interviewed between November and December 2006. Sensibility was revealed as the capacity to observe details in order to intervene in a situation the best way possible, and also as a way to break with exclusive models of the cognitive-instrumental rationality of science and technique, since sensibility is the basis for developing other ways of teaching and learning to be and do Nursing.
The nurse teacher. Construction of a new professional identity
Objective. To represent how a new identity is being constructed by nurses initiating their activities as teachers. Methodology. In 2010, a descriptive-interpretative qualitative research was conducted of four cases of nurse teachers from Nursing Schools. Aspects of teacher identity and management of critical incidents in the classroom were reviewed. The information was obtained through a structured survey and the data underwent analysis of contents. Results. The nurses surveyed state that the teaching exercise is a culmination stage of clinical nursing. Teaching confers them stability in their professional life; however, they report that the complexity of the educational practice poses a big challenge. They feel responsible for the formation of future nursing professionals. In spite of defining themselves as constructivists in the way of teaching, they are governed by a technical conception on the way of approaching the educational practice. They attribute the critical incidents to ...
