Simulation of Radial Three-Phase Coning System (original) (raw)
This study reviews the performance of a three-phase coning model when simulated at different oil production rates, varying perforation intervals and permeability anisotropies. Data from the second comparative solution project which is a three-phase radial model with fifteen layers was used to run the sensitivities for production rates, perforation intervals and permeability anisotropies of the system. ECLIPSE 100 was used to simulate the different scenarios with the knowledge of the radial extent and fluid contacts of the system. The results obtained indicate that larger production rates increase the pressure gradient and consequently, improve the recovery efficiency of a reservoir. Longer perforation intervals produce more water while shorter perforation intervals produce less water; conversely, longer perforation intervals produce less gas and shorter perforation produce more gas. This indicates that smaller perforation intervals are likely to increase the water breakthrough time ...

A predictive protocol to obtain maximum water-free oil production rate for perforated vertical wells
Journal of Petroleum Exploration and Production Technology
Producing an oilfield in a cost-effective way depends on how long water production could be delayed in the reservoir. Many flow mechanisms, correlations, and methods to calculate maximum water-free oil production rate have been published, However, those methods have generally failed to not consider the skin effect which affects the flow into the wellbore. In this paper, the semi-analytical perforation skin model as presented by Karakas and Tariq is incorporated into the Meyer and Garder correlation for critical oil rate from a perforated vertical well interval to obtain the maximum water-free oil production rate and optimal perforation parameters. The resulting coupled computational model is used to determine the sensitivity of the maximum water-free oil production rate to wellbore perforation parameters. Whilst an increase in perforation length and decrease in spacing between perforation increase the critical flow rate, an increase in perforation radius did not translate to higher ...
THE IMPACT OF PERFORATION GEOMETRY ON OIL WELL PRODUCTIVITY
IAEME, 2019
The increase in demand for oil and gas today requires oil operators to maximize productivity. In order to produce more fluid from the reservoir into the wellbore, perforations must penetrate considerably beyond invaded zone with impaired permeability. The production engineers must take advantage of the perforation controllable parameters to maximize the well productivity. In this study, a simple analytical model incorporating perforation length, radius, and shot density was used to analyze oil well productivity. The results shows that the production rate can be increased by the perforation length, radius, and shot density. The drawdown pressure was reduced with increase in the perforation length and shot density. Higher fluid velocity was controlled with increase in the shot density, length and radius of perforation. The length of perforation and shot density are better in optimizing well productivity. Optimum perforation parameters are required as further increase result in increase in cost relative to the productivity.

The importance of designing a horizontal well completion for the purpose of optimizing production can never be overemphasized. In thin oil columns wherethe problem of gas and water coning is predominant, it is important to optimize the perforation length so as to get as much oil as possible from the thin oil rim reservoirprior to the onset of water and gas coning. It is very critical to know exactly how much of the horizontal length should be perforated. In this study, the effect of perforation lengthsand densitieson oil production is from a thin oil rim reservoir wereanalyzed. The results show that horizontal well performance is directly affected by the distribution/location and length of the perforated intervals i.e. the higher the length of fraction perforated the less dependent is the production on the distribution, the more uniform the distribution of the perforations along the entire length of the reservoir, the lower the gas oil ratio(GOR) The same fraction length uniformly per...
