Accurate Estimation of Harmonic Components of Power Signal
2005
The present study proposes a novel technique of detecting and estimating the harmonic components of a signal under the influence of significant noise. The proposed method combines the advantages of both singular value decomposition (SVD) and orthogonal least squares (OLS) algorithm. By introducing an error reduction ratio (ERR) test, the algorithm detects the correct frequency component present in the signal. The other parameters of the signal are computed using SVD. The performance of the method has been demonstrated considering a power signal at different levels of noise and has been found to be satisfactory.
Power System Harmonics Estimation using Signal Processing Techniques
IOSR Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 2014
This paper proves the effectiveness of Least Mean Square (LMS) estimation algorithm for estimation of power system harmonics, inter-harmonics and sub-harmonics of distorted signal. Accurate estimation can be achieved by this technique for harmonics, sub-harmonics and inter-harmonics estimation including possible variation in the signal such as change in amplitude when applied to a distorted power system signal. This technique is compared with Least square based algorithm and Recursive least square (RLS) Algorithm simulation and experimental studies are carried out for the above three algorithm and it is observed that the proposed LMS approach to estimation of harmonics, inter-harmonics and sub-harmonics in a distorted power system signal exhibits superior estimation performance in terms of tracking time and accuracy as compared to performances Least Square based algorithm i.e Recursive Least Square (RLS) algorithm.
A maximum likelihood approach to harmonics measurements in power systems
Proceedings of 1994 IEEE Workshop on Computers in Power Electronics, 1994
Estimating the amplitudes and phases of the harmonic components of one or three-phase currents (and voltages) is required for an emcient active power filtering. In this paper, we propose a new approach based on the maximum UkeUhood principle. This estimation is unbiased and reaches the lowest statlstical variance. Moreover, Its computational burden is shown to be weaker than for any other method. Two algorithms are also derived to track slowly-varying non-stationary harmonic signals. The increasing amount of data obtained by power quality monitors and need for better understanding of power system disturbances like harmonics requires new analysis tools. A simple technique is presented in this paper for modelling of nonlinear electric domestic loads. In this paper, the application of Kalman filtering algorithm is used for harmonic analysis and nonlinear load modelling. This technique is used to identifying the harmonics present in the signal as well as calculate the admittance or impedance in order to model the system to know the behavior of the system during the presence of harmonics. The previous methods like FFT, Wavelet transform and S-transform techniques are used to analyze the harmonics by using entire signal, but the proposed technique uses directly by taking one cycle samples of the voltage and current waveforms. It has been shown, that the proposed algorithm is validated with the PSCAD/EMTDC models and experimental results. Keywords— Identification of ha...
Comparison of frequency estimation algorithms for power quality assessment
Measurement, 2009
In this paper, the comparison between several frequency estimation algorithms for power quality frequency assessment is shown. These include spectral, adaptive filtering, mixed time and frequency domain, least-squares and eigenvector decomposition algorithms. The different algorithms’ results are compared for three typical power measurement situations that include harmonics and noise. The main objective is to select the most promising algorithms for
A Generalized Approach for Power Quality Disturbances Recognition Based on Kalman Filter
IEEE Access, 2021
This paper presents a new automatic detection and classification approach of power quality (PQ) problems using Kalman filter. Kalman filter is used as an estimator to calculate the fundamental frequency and harmonic components amplitudes of the voltage or current signals. Then the instantaneous total harmonic distortion (iTHD) and the energy are calculated. For each half cycle of the processed signal, five decision quantities are calculated based on iTHD and energy and these quantities are the three consecutive maximum values of iTHD, standard deviation and energy difference between distorted signal and its fundamental frequency component. Decision rules based on these decision quantities are applied to identify and classify the PQ events in this captured signal. The proposed approach is tested on single and combined PQ events that are generated using the MATLAB with the help of mathematical models that are conformity with standard IEEE-1159. The performance is assessed using more t...
Estimation of power quality using an unscented Kalman filter
2007
The present study proposes a novel method of tracking the time varying frequency and amplitude of a distorted power frequency signal using an unscented Kalman filter (UKF). The UKF is a derivative free estimator which does not compute Jacobian matrices and therefore offers significant computational advantages over the extended Kalman filter (EKF). A new model structure is proposed for estimation of amplitude and frequency. The performance of UKF has been compared with those of EKF considering signals which can represent worst case measurement and network conditions in a typical power system. Results of simulation demonstrate that under identical conditions, the performance of both UKF and EKF are similar with less computations with UKF.
Comparison of harmonic estimation methods for power quality assessment
Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2018
Power quality is regulated by international accepted standards from IEEE and IEC. One of the parameters that is defined in the standards is the harmonic distortion. The grouping method is the standard-advised method to evaluate harmonics but other approaches can be used. In this paper, three different methods are compared considering memory requirements, relative time consumption and the uncertainty of the harmonic estimation with spectral leakage, noise and different harmonic phases.
