Comparative Study of Heat Exchangers Using CFD
A parallel flow heat exchanger and a corresponding ribbed tube heat exchanger is modeled and numerically analysed using a commercial finite volume CFD package. Pro-E & ANSYS 14.5 softwares are used for the designing and the analysis. CFD predictions of effectiveness of the two heat exchangers are obtained and compared. After selecting the best modeling approach, the sensitivity of the results to particular flow rate is investigated. It is observed that the flow and the temperature fields obtained from CFD simulations provide valuable information about the parts of the heat exchanger design that need improvement. Correlation based approaches may indicate the existence of the weakness but CFD simulations can also pin point the source and the location of it. Using CFD may speed up the design process and may improve the final design.
Compact heat exchangers – Design and optimization with CFD
International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2020
Heat transfer is one of the key aspects of machineries, devices and industrial processes for maintaining their functionality and also for achieving better product quality. Hence, heat exchangers of different types and sizes are used in these applications with the purpose of removing the extra process/device heat to maintain the desirable working temperatures. However, the size of a heat exchanger is a major consideration for any type of process/device as it decides the space requirements (i.e., the size) of the machine/device or the processing plant. At first, this study aims to investigate the design procedure of a heat exchanger theoretically and then its performance will be analyzed and optimized using computational fluid dynamics. For the design purposes, a counter flow heat exchanger was considered and its length was theoretically calculated with the LMTD method while the pressure drop and energy consumption were also calculated with the Kern method. Afterwards, a computational model of the same heat exchanger was implemented with ANSYS and then this model was extended to six different models by altering its key design parameters for the optimization purposes. Eventually, these models were used to analyze the heat transfer behavior, mass flow rates, pressures drops, flow velocities and vortices of shell and tube flows inside the heat exchanger. Theoretical and CFD results showed only a 1.05% difference in terms of the cooling performance of the hot fluid. The axial pressure drops showed positive correlations with both the overall heat transfer coefficient and pumping power demand. Overall, the results of this study confirms that CFD modeling can be promising for design and optimization of heat exchangers and it allows testing of numerous design options without fabricating physical prototypes.

The paper explores the validation of experimental studies by means of numerical modelling of heat transfer processes occurring in a two-phase thermosyphon air heater. The object analysed is an air heater, used for the utilisation of the heat from flue gases emitted by a steam generator running on solid fuel with nominal load of 125 t/h, and temperature of the flue gases at nominal load 220C. The experimental study performed shows heat transfer coefficients of the evaporation and condensation zones of hfgas = 104.9 and hfgas = 84.9 W(m2 · K) respectively, and a reduction of the exhaust gas temperature down to 184°C. The numerical study pertains to a thermosyphon tube with complex geometry. Three zones can be distinguished for the air heater in question. In the evaporation zone the tube is inclined at 30 degrees in the direction of the flue gasses, in addition to the inclines of the adiabatic zone – 30 degrees, and the evaporation zone of the thermosyphon – 90 degrees to the horizon. ...
Combustion and Heat Transfer Analysis of Gas fired heat exchanger unit using CFD
Understanding of combustion process and heat transfer rate and its performance is critical to complying with (progressively more) rigorous emissions requirements and to improving industrial productivity. Even small improvements in heat transfer rate will increase in energy efficiency and performance of the subsystems and which can have significant impacts in a continuous operation. While tremendous advances have been made in understanding the fundamental science of combustion process and the conjugate heat transfer, the remaining challenges are extremely complex. Today, trial and error is the only satisfactory method heat exchanger tubes design and problem-solving approach. To make improvements, it is critical to understand and accurately predict how heat is released and heat transferred across tube thickness and heat pickup by external air which is result in temperature rise by external air. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) offers a numerical modeling methodology that helps in this understanding. Combustible character of Natural gas (Methane) is one major area which uses Natural gas as a fuel. Hot combustible gas passes through inside the tube and cold air passes around the tubes understanding heat transfer across tube thickness and improve the design of tubes to increase the effectiveness of heat transfer is very important in design optimization of gas heaters system for HVAC industrial application. Burner and tubes are being the component where the combustion process takes place, produces emissions & heat transfer taken place across tubes thickness, thereby, making the fuels less environment friendly. But, with the use of natural gas as fuel for burner, the emissions are reduced to a considerable extent.

The cross-flow heat exchangers are employed in variety of commercial, domestic and industrial applications such as air conditioning, power generation, refrigeration, petrochemical, petroleum, and other industries because of the wide range of design possibilities, simple manufacturing technology, low maintenance and low cost. The performance of the heat exchanger is a significant effect on the performance of cooling systems. The determination of ε-NTU relation by mathematical model for cross-flow heat exchangers with complex flow arrangements is presented in the current work. Tube element approach is used in this model. In this approach, the coil along the path of the tube fluid is discretized, to find the outlet temperatures of the heat exchanger. Tube side fluid temperature is supposed to be constant in each cross section of the element since the heat capacity ratio C*=Cmin / Cmax in the element tends toward zero. Therefore temperature is regulated by the effectiveness of a local element corresponding to a condenser or evaporator type element. A mathematical model, Numerical discretization, and algorithm for calculating the effectiveness of a cross-flow heat exchanger are described in this paper. The proposed model represents valuable research tool for efficiency of the heat exchangers in experimental studies and theoretical work.
Simulation of double pipe heat exchanger and validation with CFD analysis
THE 8TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON TRENDS IN SCIENCE AND SCIENCE EDUCATION (AISTSSE) 2021
Heat exchangers plays significant role in engineering because they transfer heat between two different flow streams and temperatures. There are various designs of heat exchangers based on construction, size, direction of fluid flows. Amongst, industry has the most prevalent application for double pipe heat exchangers due to its simple and economical design. Proper analysis is required prior to selection of suitable application specific heat exchanger with good performance. In the present work, double pipe counter flow heat exchanger has been considered for the analysis. Simulation of heat exchanger has been done using MATLAB SIMULINK based on the NTU approach. Variation of heat transfer coefficients, heat transfer rate, effectiveness with mass flow rates have been discussed using the simulation results. The same design of the heat exchanger has been analysed with ANSYS CFD. Results obtained from both the models have been validated and the reasons for variations in result have been identified and discussed. Some of inferences obtained with CFD analysis has been discussed.
THERMODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF AN AIR-AIR HEAT PIPE HEAT EXCHANGER
In this paper, heat transfer analysis for an air-air heat exchanger was experimentally carried out to find its thermal performance and effectiveness. Air-air heat exchanger equipped with finned heat pipes was considered for the experimentation. Mass flow rate of air was considered in between 0.24 to 0.53 kg/s. The temperature at the condenser side of the heat pipe heat exchanger was kept constant at around 23 °C and at the evaporator part it was varied from 88 to 147 °C. The performance of heat pipe heat exchanger was evaluated at different mass flow rate of air, in terms of effectiveness and compared with its corresponding value found by theoretical analysis.
Numerical Modeling of Regenerative Rotary Heat Exchanger: A Review
Journal of Biosystems Engineering, 2017
Background: Heat recovery is one of the prominent ways to save a considerable amount of conventional fossil fuel and minimize its adverse effects on the environment. The rotary heat exchanger is one of the most effective and efficient devices for heat recovery or heat exchanging purposes. It is a regenerative type of heat exchanger, which has been studied and used for many heat recovery purposes. However, regenerative thermal wheels have been mostly used as heat recovery systems in buildings. For modeling a rotary regenerator, it is very important to numerically consider all the factors involved, such as effectiveness, rotational speed, geometrical size and shape, and pressure drop (Δp). In recent times, several researchers have actively studied the rotary heat exchangers, both theoretically and experimentally. Reviews: In this paper different advances in the numerical modeling of regenerative rotary heat exchangers in relation to fluid flow and heat transfer have been discussed. Researchers have indicated that the effectiveness of the regenerative rotary heat exchanger depends on various factors including, among many others, rotational speed, rotational period and combustion power. It is reported that with the increase of periodic rotation the deviation of theoretical results from the experimental result increases. The available literature indicates that regenerative heat exchangers are having relatively more effectiveness (60-80%), compared to other heat exchangers. It is also observed that the finite difference method and finite volume methods are mostly used for discretizing the heat transfer governing equations, under some assumptions. Research also indicates that for the effectiveness calculation the ε-NTU method is the most popular and convenient.
Effect of Fluid Types on the Performance of Heat Exchanger Base on Flow Configurations
2019
An application software for evaluating heat exchanger performance considering four different types of flow configurations is developed in this study. Standard physical heat transfer model was devised by applying the concept of energy balance to the outlet temperature for both hot and cold fluid portion of the system. The models implemented in MATLAB R2018b was used to estimate numerically the heat exchanger performance in terms of effectiveness (ε) and heat transfer rate (Q). In all the flow configuration considered in this work, an increase in heat exchanger effectiveness is observed with increase in mass flow rate consequently, in comparison to other flow configurations such as: parallel flow, cross flow and shell and tube at n=1, the counter flow configuration gave best thermal performance with the heat exchanger effectiveness value range from 1.036 to 1.059. Among the refrigerants simulated in the selected heat exchanger system flow configuration under similar operating conditio...
