Factors related to dental caries in children (3-5 years) at Grogol Utara, South Jakarta

Dental caries is the most prevalent oral disease in Indonesian children. For children aged 3–5 years, its occurrence is related to feeding patterns and behavior. We determined factors contributing most to dental caries occurrence in children 3–5 years old. A cross-sectional health screening study was carried out in the Grogol Utara area of South Jakarta. Two calibrated examiners collected oral health status with decayed, extracted and filled teeth (deft), and plaque indexes. Feeding pattern was collected using a structured questionnaire. Multivariate analysis was performed comparing dental caries, feeding pattern, oral health behavior, and sociodemographic characteristics. Of all 165 subjects, 82.4% had caries. On bivariate analysis, the contact time of breastmilk and teeth, formula milk frequency, and child’s age showed significant relationships with dental caries. WHO STEPS-wise Approach in Assessment of Dental Caries and Children's Quality of Life in Indonesia

Background: The high prevalence of dental caries is a major oral health problem in Indonesia. We aimed to determine the relationship between dental caries and quality of life in children living in rural and urban areas in Indonesia. Methods: A pilot survey was carried out with 2550 students aged 6-7 years old and 11-12 years old in rural, peri-urban and urban sites in 14 provinces in Indonesia. The pathfinder survey technique was applied. Data collected based on the WHO STEPS-wise framework using a dental examination by the WHO form (Annex 7) and quality of life questionnaire (Annex 8, Q10). Results: The prevalence dental caries among aged 6-7 and 11-12 were 88.01% and 70.27%, respectively. Dental Caries Experience and Associated Factors Among 12-year-old Schoolchildren in East Jakarta , Indonesia

Oral health plays an important role in general health. Many studies have reported various risk factors that are associated with the incidence of dental caries. The oobjective of this study is to assess the prevalence of dental caries and analyze factors associated with dental caries experience among 12-years-old schoolchildren in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, Indonesia. A crosssectional study was conducted examining 146 schoolchildren aged 12 years old. Dental caries experience was assessed using the DMF-T index. A self-administered questionnaire was used to measure the risk factors related to dental caries. The dental caries prevalence was 71% with the mean DMF-T index of 2.27 ± 2.53. The highest occurrence of dental caries was in the lower first permanent molar. Dental visit within the last 12 months was associated with a lower caries risk (OR= 0.128; 95% CI, 0.054 – 0.303). Assessing and Modeling the Factor That Affected Dental Caries Among Preschool Children in Bachok, Kelantan, Malaysia

A prevalence study of dental caries was undertaken in 5-6 year-old preschool children from Bachok District, Kelantan. In this study, sample consists of 382 children were collected in order to find the factor that affected the dental caries among children. Dental caries was examined visually by two dentists from School of Dental Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia and also the related information of the observations was recorded through the provided research form. The results showed that the prevalence of dental caries amongst 5-6-year old, is about 63.1% (high caries category). Factors Related to Dental Caries on Elementary School Students in Badung Regency – Indonesia

Caries, dental and oral disease affects 90% of school-age children. Badung regency occupied fourth position of the populations with dental problem in past 12 months. The data shows only 3.6% of Badung population who behaved properly in brushing. Badung regency economically has the highest local revenues in Bali. The objective of this research is to understand the factors associated with dental caries in primary school students in Badung. This research type is quantitative-qualitative, conducted from July to September 2016. The sample was 252 students, selected by multistage random sampling. The result showed 71% of students belong to very high, high, and moderate caries; 64.8% of students belongs to low sosio-economic category and 89.7% of students need guidance in brushing. The results show there is no relationship between the variables of socioeconomic category with a classification of dental caries proven by sig value results in 0.552. There is a relationship between variables of behavior criteria in brushing with dental caries classification with sig. value of 0.000. There is a relationship between school dental health (UKGS) with the classification of dental caries with sig. value of 0.001. Multivariate analysis shows sub variable UKGS category 1 and sub variable category 2 are associated with dental caries.

Association between early childhood caries and oral health-related quality of life using ecohis instrument

Dental caries is an oral health problem that can develop early in preschool children, affecting their quality of life. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between caries status and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in preschool children at Grogol Utara, Kebayoran Lama, Jakarta Selatan. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 200 children aged 3–5 years. Dental caries status was assessed via clinical examination. OHRQoL was assessed using the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) by interviewing a total of 165 mothers. The results of the ECOHIS were used to represent the OHRQoL. A significant difference was seen between caries status and OHRQoL regarding the impact on both children and their families (P<.05). Analysis of Risk Factors of Biopsychosocial with Early Childhood Caries (ECC) in Indonesian Pre-School Children

Objective: To describe the Early Childhood Caries (ECC) in Indonesian preschool children based on biopsychosocial risk factors. Material and Methods: This research is an analytic observational with a cross sectional design toward 506 preschool children aged 2-6 years at East Luwu Regency, Indonesia. The biopsychosocial data studied were gender, ethnicity, personal hygiene, child psychology, age, nutritional status, and dental and oral health behavior. These data were obtained through a questionnaire and clinical examination (nutritional status). Multiple linear regression analysis was performed. The statistical tests were performed at the significance level of 0.05. Results: Characteristics of respondents based on parents' origin, found that the majority of respondents were parents from Bugis tribes (68.4%) with ECC frequency of 72.2%. Regarding the visit to the dentist, 12.6% were afraid of the dentist, with ECC frequency of 71.9%. Most children had normal nutritional status (67%) with ECC frequency of 69.3%. Biopsychosocial factors, which significantly affect the Early Childhood Caries, were parents' tribe (p=0.022) and age (p=0.011). There was an association between ECC with brushing teeth before going to bed (p=0.049), use of mouthwash (p=0.002) and consumption of snacks (p<0.001). Conclusion: Biopsychosocial factor indicators are affect the Early Childhood Caries towards Indonesian preschool children.
