The cultivation of fast-growing wood (e.g., poplar, willow or black locust) in short rotation coppices and agroforestry systems presents an opportunity for producing biomass sustainably in the agricultural sector. Cost-efficient agricultural wood production requires the availability of high-performance machinery and methods with which high-quality wood chips can be produced at low cost. It is known from harvesting short rotation coppices in practice that both the wood chip quality and the performance of the harvesting machinery depend on a variety of factors (e.g., harvesting method, weather conditions, tree species). Efficiency of energy wood chip production from forest biomass

Various activities are undertaken worldwide in order to counteract the visible climate changes. One of them is promotion of renewable energy sources. Aims established by the European Commission with respect to increasing the share of energy obtained from RES assume an average increase of up to 20% by the year 2020. Poland, as an EU member state has been obliged to increase the share of energy from RES to 15%. Promoting renewable energy sources contributes to diversification of supplies, thus providing conditions for the development of energetics at a local level. Taking into account Polish conditionings it is believed that biomass, including forest biomass, can be an important renewable energy source. The present study focuses on the problem of efficiency of energy wood chip production from forest biomass utilizing a Bandit 2090 wood chipper. Chipping efficiency, depending on the condition of particular tree stands, ranged from 14 to 17 m·h.

Increasing demand for using renewable energy resources is strongly emphasized during the last decades. On the international level it is recognized through a series of conventions, conclusions and recommendations. Forests are energy source through conversion of wood biomass into solid, fluent and gaseous fuels for industrial and household use. Wood chips is a form of biomass, size of 5-50 mm, which is obtained by chipping of lower quality logs, trees, brushwood and wood residues. Some investigation showed that choosing the right chipper is crucial in a projection of chipping system. In this study, chipping at the landing site was compared with the Jenz HEM 700 and Pezzolato PTH 1300/1500 chippers. The subject of chipping was beech long fuelwood and stacked fuelwood.
