The Role of Critical Reading to Promote Students’ Critical Thinking and Reading Comprehension

Developing students' critical thinking and reading comprehension is crucial, particularly for those in colleges, because they need to read numerous scientific journals and textbooks written in English. Therefore, students need to employ critical reading strategies to raise their critical thinking skills for a successful academic life. However, current studies have shown a lack of critical thinking strategies among Indonesian students, thereby leading to various academic problems, particularly the inability to comprehend English. Therefore, this research aims to explore critical reading's role to support students' critical thinking and reading comprehension skills when reading a text. This is a qualitative research with the purposive random technique used to obtain data from seven (7) EFL non-English major undergraduate students in their 2nd semester through three (3) short argumentative texts, a semi-structured interview, and students' answers in written forms. The results showed that students developed their critical thinking skills and improved their reading comprehension in varying degrees by exposure to numerous tasks.

Critical thinking has been used and debated since the time of great philosophers such as Plato and Socrates. Its real origin is deeply rooted in the logic and questioning process used by these early philosophers. In recent times many scholars and researchers have conducted studies concerning the benefits and effects of critical thinking skills in different disciplines to the extent that now we are speaking about critical thinking movement whose benefits are much discussed in educational curricula. In language learning, activities that enrich learners' conceptual knowledge ranging from listening, reading, speaking, and writing tasks can foster critical thinking skills. Within this framework, a study was carried out at Sultan Moulay Slimane University, Faculty of Letters and Humanities in Beni-Mellal. The aim of this study is twofold. First, to see the possibility of integrating critical thinking skills in reading courses; second, to investigate the attitudes of the students towards such integration of critical thinking. Two research tools were used: an experiment followed by a questionnaire. The findings revealed that after the experiment, which consisted of exposing the students to tasks involving critical thinking when dealing with the reading skill, the students developed an awareness of critical thinking skills and dispositions. They developed the ability of interpretation, analysis, inquisitiveness, truth-seeking, problem-solving, evaluating information and decision making. Besides, their attitudes towards the integration of critical thinking while dealing with reading were reported to be positive.
Critical thinking skills are often emphasized in introductory university courses because of their importance in later levels of study. The primary purpose of this research is to examine and assess the relationship between reading comprehension and critical thinking. Students who plan on furthering their education after high school would benefit greatly from classes that teach them to read critically and assess texts. This study set out to quantify how much critical thought students put into their English reading. The research relies on a questionnaire administered to undergraduates at a single Karachi university as part of a qualitative investigation. Undergraduates still lack the abilities necessary for reading for pleasure, a problem that is highlighted by the study because of the importance of the link between reading comprehension and critical thinking. The results of this study reveal that college students have an optimistic view of reading comprehension, but that this view is not reflected in either their level of critical thinking or their aptitude to read critically. Reading a book instead of looking at a screen is better for your health, your mind, and your capacity to think critically. Instilling in children a lifelong love of reading is crucial to their academic achievement. Among the most significant recommendations provided by the current study are the refurbishment and expansion of libraries, the encouragement of students' use of higher order thinking skills to enhance their reading and comprehension in any context, and the revision of the English curriculum.
The correlations among critical thinking skills, critical reading skills and reading comprehension

Practicing critical thinking through extensive reading activities

To become creative, people must evolve critical thinking skills. The skills in Critical Thinking (CT) are not developed unplanned. Those skills can be taught and practiced as part of an Extensive Reading (ER) program. The present study was to find out whether the activities in ER influence L2 learners’ CT skills as well as their other language skills. The program was implemented at the English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers Training, UIN Jakarta. The results show that the majority (more than 60%) of the students stated that not only were their language skills improved, but their CT was also developed. They also said that this program not only helped them in doing other subjects, but also influenced their way of thinking or seeing things.

Critical thinking is the important aspect in learning. In reading, people needs critical thinking to understand well. The aim of this research is to investigate the differences critical thinking in reading comprehension between male and female students.This research used quantitative approach and the methode is ex-post facto. The participants of the study were the third grade of English Department students at University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri consisting of 30 students (15 male and 15 female). The SPSS data in this research showed the means of male students was 40.897. While the means of female students was 46.4333. Female students more critics in inferring, deducting, assuming, interpreting the information and analyzing the argument. An Exploration of Students’ Difficulties in Using Critical Thinking Skills in Reading

This study intends to explore students’ difficulties in using critical thinking skills in reading. The subject of this study was second year undergraduate students of Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, Banda Aceh. This qualitative study analysed students’ difficulties in using critical thinking skills in term of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. A personal interview was conducted to find the data from the students. The result indicates that students’ lack of practicing let them difficult in using critical thinking skills in reading. The other difficulties found were lack of language mastery, implied meaning, background knowledge, repetition and lack of vocabulary. Among six problems discovered above, lack of practicing, background knowledge and language mastery had made the students felt that critical thinking was difficult to be applied.
Critical Thinking Skills Used Among University Students in Reading Comprehension

The objective of this study was to investigate the frequencies of using critical thinking in reading among university students namely; interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. The quantitative method was used in this study. The respondents of this study were 100 second year undergraduate students of Ar-raniry State Islamic University, Banda Aceh. The data needed for the study were collected through a set of questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed quantitatively in the form of percentages. The results showed that inference was the critical thinking skill mostly about 54% of students used in reading comprehension. In addition, the next types of critical thinking skills used by students in order were analysis, explanation, evaluation, interpretation, and self-regulation. Self-regulation was the least skill about 5% of them practised by students in reading comprehension. It indicated that the frequency of using critical thinking skills among university students were more on inference level in reading comprehension.
An Investigation of Critical Reading Skills on Tertiary Level Students

Tertiary level students are supposed to graduate from university with fully critical reading skills awareness. However, for a variety of reasons these skills are not always as well developed as they might be. This paper seeks to explore first year university students‟ critical reading skills at Arab Open University. A reading test, assessingstudents‟ critical reading skills, was conducted by the researcher.The data obtained was entered and processed by using (SPSS) program.Results of the analysis showed that participants do not have critical reading skillsand can‟t be considered as active readers due to their unfamiliarity with of using reading strategies to deal with unfamiliar texts. This study aims to determine the relationship between critical thinking skills and reading skills in Islamic Education students at UNIPDU. The theory used in this study is Jean Piaget's theory of Constructivism. The study population was 122 Islamic Religious Education students at UNIPDU who were categorized as fond of Reading, marked by frequent visits to the library/reading room. The research sample was 70 students. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The variables of this research are critical thinking ability as the independent variable and Reading ability as the dependent variable. The data collection technique uses a test for each respondent who is the research sample. The data analysis technique uses product moment. The analysis results show a positive relationship between critical thinking skills and Reading ability in UNIPDU Islamic Religious Education students, although the relationship is low.
