A STUDY OF IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES APPLIED BY ACADEMICIANS IN SELECT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS OF DEHRADUN

This paper analyses impression management techniques followed by academic staff members based in Dehradun region of Uttarakhand, India. The study was done through cluster analysis and the parameters of the factors were taken from Jones and Pittman's taxonomy of impression management study. The purpose of the study was to know about impression management techniques adopted by teachers, lecturers and professors in schools, colleges and universities of Dehradun region. The study reveals that most of the employees adopt self-promotion and ingratiation to impress others at workplace. While their motive behind impressing others was found to be desire to attain career growth in their respective fields. Interestingly, irrespective of impression management techniques adopted by them, knowledge and intellect are the two most important attributes in an academician which most of the employees do feel are necessary for them to impress others at workplace.

Tactics of Impression Management: Relative Success on Workplace Relationship

Impression Management, the process by which people control the impressions others form of them, plays an important role in inter-personal behavior. All kinds of organizations consist of individuals with variety of personal characteristics; therefore those are important to manage them effectively. Identifying the behavior manner of each of these personal characteristics, interactions among them and interpersonal relations are on the basis of the impressions given and taken. Understanding one of the important determinants of individual’s social relations helps to get a broader insight of human beings. Employees try to sculpture their relationships in organizational settings as well. Impression management turns out to be a continuous activity among newcomers, used in order to be accepted by the organization, and among those who have matured with the organization, used in order to be influential (Demir, 2002).

Impression Management Tactics Employed by Primary school Heads to Influence Management and Leadership Decisions in Schools: A Survey of Two Districts in Zimbabwe, 2018

Of late, there has been increased research interest in impression management tactics in employment interviews. This study took a detour and investigated impression management tactics used by primary school heads to influence management and leadership decisions in their schools. Underpinned by a mixed methods paradigm, a descriptive survey research design was used wherein fifty selected school heads from two districts in Zimbabwe participated in the study. The school heads responded to a questionnaire and interviews. Data revealed that school heads used self promotion, Association, ingratiation, exemplification, supplication, and intimidation tactics in rank order respectively, to build impressions around their leadership capabilities. A major conclusion was that, these impression management tactics are used differently in different organisation types. It was recommended that the study of impression management in educational leadership and management, which is currently receiving peripheral attention, should be foregrounded to enhance the practice of leadership and management in education.

Impression Model As Innovative Teaching-Learning Tool. Running Title: Impression Model As Innovative Teaching

The core of the teaching process is the arrangement of the environment within which the students can interact and study how to learn. Models are one of them for creating a learning environment in the classroom. The teaching models have been classified into three main types, as Philosophical teaching models (John Locke), Psychological models of teaching and Modern teaching models. The Philosophical teaching models includes the Insight model, the Impression model and the Rule model. Pioneer of impression mode l John Locke concluded in his educational thoughts that, “No proposition can be said to be in the mind and “Virtue generally approved, not because innate, but because profitable” No any specific theory of using Impression Model as like concept attainment m odel, inquiry model etc. but researcher has taken reference of Behavioristic theory and the Constructivist approach for making impression model as a student teacher centric model. The major concern of most of the teachers is how to impress students in the classroom by using strategies and models. Hence, to know the advantage of impression model researcher has conducted this study. Objectives of the study are 1.To design the elements of impression model. 2.To design the syntax the impression model. 3.To design impression making process of impression model. 4.To design teaching learning plan (Lesson plan) of impression model. 5.To orient to B.Ed. M.Ed.(Integrated) semester V student teachers about the impression model. 6.To implement the impression model o n B.Ed. M.Ed.(Integrated) semester V student teachers. 7.To implement the impression model on B.Ed. student teachers. 8.To know opinion on impression model by B.Ed. M.Ed.(Integrated) semester V student teachers. The present research is descriptive survey r esearch. For the research sample B.Ed. M.Ed. (Int.) student teachers were selected by convenient sampling method. Researcher made questionnaire was used to collect data by considering pilot testing and analyzed by using qualitative method. Conclusions are found that Impression Model is very good to use but preparation is required by the teachers for impressing students. We can use various strategies for implementing the model. Though it is time consuming but it makes teaching learning process enjoyable and enthusiastic.

Teachers' professional image in Turkish school series

The aim of this study is to determine teachers' professional image in Turkish school series on television. Teachers' professional image was analyzed under four categories as demographic characteristics, positive, negative and omitted image components. To this end, four school series broadcasted on different TV channels were analyzed. The TV series were obtained from the websites of the channels or they were downloaded from YouTube. The study was carried out as an ethnographic study which is one of the qualitative designs. Study materials were chosen through criterion sampling method. The first three episodes and main teacher character of the series were included in the study. Data was collected through document review method. To analyze the data ethnographic content analysis was utilized. The following results were obtained. There were not stereotypes in terms of gender or age of the characters. On the other hand, three of the characters were seen as teachers in social sciences while only one of them was a Math teacher. All of the characters were single or widow which was regarded as a negative image component. Additionally, all of the series were set in high schools. As for the positive image components, the characters were idealistic, self-sacrificing, concerned, role-model, respectable and just. The names of the characters can be said to have positive connotations in Turkish language. They had positive visual image and good relations with their students. The characters could solve their students' personal problems. However, some negative image components were present in the series. These can be listed as financial status, the fierce opposition to the school administration, solving the problems at school informally, making exam in the first lesson and using insulting words to the students. Teachers were also depicted as an occupational group which can easily be appointed from place to place as a punishment. It was also determined that there were some omitted image components. Teachers were not depicted while planning, preparing for the lesson, training, participating in the meetings, grading the exams or doing extra tasks.

Impression Management Tactics That Act as a Psychological Booster for Employees

This research study identifies the common impression management tactics that are used at the workplace and that act as positive psychological factors. The main aim of impression management tactics is to protect, maintain or develop their image in front of other people. There are two main types of such tactics, 'preventive' and 'enhancing'. In this study we have measured the impact of five such tactics; Self promotion, favor, excuse, conformity and acclaim. Excuses are 'preventive' whereas other tactics are 'enhancing'. Data was collected from 59 employees working in L.I.C India Ltd. and Polycab India Ltd. through a structured interview. The questions for the interviews were framed in a way to understand the reason why the employees use the impression management tactics and how it helps them achieve a positive mindset. Results indicate that all of the employees use impression management tactics in their workplace. They do this to create a positive working environment in their workplace and also to make them feel good and motivated to work more.

A Research to Determine The Role of Five Factor Personality Traits on Impression Management Behaviors

This study aims to determine the role of five-factor personality traits on impression management behaviors. The concept of personality, which is defined as all of the physical, mental and spiritual features that make an individual different from other individuals, is a whole that includes factors such as socio-cultural factors, family, social class, geographic factors that arise out of some congenital genetic factors. In terms of being an important factor that directs behavior, it is an ongoing phenomenon of behavioral scientists (Şimşek et al., 2017: 97). According to Robert McCrae and Paul Costa, “extraversion, neuroticism, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness” have come to the fore as five basic personality traits (McCrae and Costa, 1989: 17; Göksal, 2017: 41). The purpose of this study is to determine the role of teachers five factor personality traits on impression management behaviors. In this context, a survey was conducted on 182 high school teachers in Konya. SPSS 23.0 was used to analyze the results. According to the results; no significant relationship has been found between teachers’ impression management behavior and five factor personality traits.

Impact of Impression Management on Performance Rating Ahmed

Impression management has gained significant attention of researchers and practitioners all over the world. Different impression management tactics are used by the employees in the organizational setting to get a better performance rating. The impact of these impression management tactics has been analyzed in the current study. Researchers developed a hypothetical model on the basis of literature review. Banking and telecom sectors of Pakistan were chosen for this study. The data was gathered from 153 dyads of supervisor and subordinates. The frequency of different impression management techniques was measured with the help of an instrument and afterwards these employees were rated by their respective supervisors. The responses of supervisors and subordinates were matched and analysis was made. Different impression management techniques are viewed differently by the supervisors. Some of them are viewed positively like ingratiation and exemplification while intimidation, self-promotion and supplication have a negative impact on performance rating.

Teachers' Views on Cyberloafing and Impression Management Tactics

The aim of this study is to identify secondary school teachers' employed in Nevşehir central district views on impression management tactics and cyberloafing. It also aims to determine whether there is a significant relationship between their views. The study was conducted in relational screening model. On the other hand, the universe of the study consisted of 316 secondary school teachers employed in Nevşehir central district during 2015-2016 academic year. Of the participants 55,4 % were females and 44.6 % were males. 40.5 % of them had 1-10 years experience, 50 % of them had 11-20 years experience and 9.5 % had 21 and more years experience. 18 % of the participants aged between 20-30; 62.3 % of them aged between 31-40; 17.1 % aged between 41-50 and finally 2.2% were 51 and over. Considering their graduation 94.3 % had undergraduate while only 5.7 % of them had graduate degree. Data were collected through Impression Management Tactics Scale and Cyberloafing Scale. In the analysis of the data, means and standard deviations were calculated; Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis H and Spearman's Rho correlation analysis were conducted. According to results of the study, teachers apply to impression management tactics but not very frequently and the level of cyberloafing behavior was " occasionally ". A positive low level significant relationship was found between teachers' views on impression management and cyberloafing.
