Tritium Management in the European Test Blanket Systems and Extrapolation to Demo
One of the main objectives of the experimental campaign on the TBS (Test Blanket Systems) in ITER is the efficient management and accurate accountancy of tritium from its source, the Test Blanket Module (TBM), up to its final routing to the ITER inner fuel cycle system. Indeed, the data collected by the tritium accountancy system, interpreted through comprehensive modelling tools, will be one of the most relevant outcomes in support of the blanket design for DEMO and beyond. This paper describes various aspects of HCLL (Helium Cooled Lithium Lead) and HCPB (Helium Cooled Pebble Bed)-TBS activities that have a direct impact on tritium management systems and then discusses their potential extrapolation in support of DEMO design. It includes: i) the design baseline of TBS sub-systems, also in light of new interface requirements coming from ITER Organization, relevant to the tritium management, focusing on the components potentially DEMO relevant; ii) the preliminary design of Tritium A...
Helium-3 blankets for tritium breeding in near-term fusion devices
Fusion Engineering and Design, 1989
The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel blanket concept for in-situ tritium breeding in a near-term device such as ITER. In this concept terrestial supplies of helium-3, rather than lithium, are used for tritium breeding. In order to assess the key characteristics of this concept, a reference configuration was adopted based on minor modifications to the helium-cooled blanket concepts considered in the Blanket Comparison and Selection Study. The chosen configuration assumes a ferritic steel for structure and cladding and beryllium for neutron multiplication. The helium-3 is contained in a loop separate from the helium-4 coolant loop and flows within the beryllium. The helium-3 blanket exhibits good tritium breeding potential and low tritium inventories and leakage rates. The helium-3 requirements are 25-50 kg of inventory and 3.4-8.5 kg makeup/yr, 95% of which is due to bumup. It is estimated that there is sufficient helium-3 from decay of present military tritium stockpiles to meet this requirement.

The experimental qualification of the tritium extraction unit (TEU) from the LiPb eutectic alloy (15.7 at. % Li), the breeder material of the water-cooled lithium–lead breeding blanket concept, is one of the fundamental items for the demonstration of tritium balance sustainability for ITER and DEMO fusion reactors. Several technologies have been proposed as TEU, but the selection of the reference technology can be carried out only after the experimental measurement of the tritium extraction efficiency. For this purpose, a dedicated facility, called TRIEX-II, was designed and installed at ENEA Brasimone Research Centre, Italy. The facility is able to qualify gas–liquid contactor (GLC), permeator against vacuum and liquid-vacuum contactor technologies at different temperatures, lithium–lead mass flow rates and hydrogen isotopes concentrations. In TRIEX-II, the hydrogen or deuterium, used to simulate tritium, are solubilised inside the LiPb with a dedicated saturator and are then extra...
Tritium management in HCLL-PPCS model AB blanket
Fusion Engineering and Design, 2007
When dealing with activities related to the design and optimisation of the Helium Cooled Lithium Lead (HCLL) blanket, doubts arose in the past about the technical feasibility of the tritium processing system. The questionable feasibility was due to the heavy performance requirements for different tritium processing subsystems, mainly consequence of the high tritium permeation rate from the breeding blanket into the main cooling circuit, which was claimed as an intrinsic characteristic of such a blanket concept. This was directly related to the supposed very low tritium solubility in the liquid lead lithium in eutectic composition.
Tritium Extraction From HCLL/WCLL/DCLL PbLi BBs of DEMO and HCLL TBS of ITER
IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2019
The tritium balance in DEMO reactor is a key factor for the success of the production of energy from the thermonuclear fusion reactor. Three of the four breeder blankets (BBs) concepts candidates for DEMO used the eutectic Pb-16Li enriched at 90% in 6Li as breeder, the water-cooled lithium-lead, dual-coolant lithium-lead, and helium-cooled lithium-lead (HCLL) BBs; therefore, the design and characterization of the tritium extraction and removal system (TER) from PbLi with high efficiency are a critical issue in the European Roadmap. In ITER research reactor, a PbLi BB concept will be qualified, the HCLL BB. An HCLL test blanket module, PbLi loop, instrumentations, and auxiliary systems will be characterized with the support of European infrastructures. However, the tritium extraction unit from PbLi (TEU) selected and designed for ITER is based on the
Tritium technology for blankets of fusion power plants
Fusion Engineering and Design, 2000
Thermonuclear fusion power stations based on the deuterium-tritium reaction require breeding blankets to produce the tritium (T) fuel consumed in the plasma. This paper resumes the state-of-the-art of the T related technology from the initial T production in the lithium-bearing breeder material to a T stream which is ready for re-injection into the plasma. The remaining development issues are outlined and conventional techniques are confronted with advanced methods requiring more R&D effort but promising certain advantages in return.
