The aim of an industrial research centre is to produce knowledge to answer the requirements of operational units. So the constraints of cost, delay and quality also apply to research activities. Consequently, industrial research centres need to be rationalized, including the design and engineering system departments. They have to optimise internal and external knowledge flows. To this end, after describing knowledge and information typologies in engineering activities, a knowledge management system is proposed. The goal is to support: (1) semi-structured information (e.g. reports, journal articles, etc.) thanks to the ANITA tool functions, which are based on attributing points of view and annotations to documents but also to document zones, and (2) non-structured information, one of the important aspects of research activities that concerns common resolution of research problems within project teams. In the latter context, the MICA approach intends to support exchange of technical messages (dialogues) and to capitalise relevant knowledge.
Representing knowledge: instances of management information

Against the backdrop of discussions about the 'Information Society', the 'Informational Economy' and the role of IT in realizing organizational change we examine how representations of 'organizational knowledge' are constructed and used in work settings. We do this through the explication of ethnographic materials that detail the realization and use of Management Information (MI) in a major UK retail bank undergoing massive organizational change. We focus in particular on explicating how existing metric information was drawn upon to construct a representation of the work of the bank for those involved in managing that work. Systems designers have been increasingly interested in offering ways of conceptualizing the problem of 'knowledge' with a view to embedding these properties in systems. In the quest to develop representations of procedural knowledge to support work we argue that it is rst necessar y to understand how representations are actually created and used in work to support existing work practices.
Wiki for knowledge sharing, a user-centred evaluation approach: a case study at STMicroelectronics

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study how a Wiki is used for knowledge sharing within an organization. Design/methodology/approach – The aim of this research is to evaluate this Wiki performance regarding knowledge sharing objectives. Findings – A Wiki has been deployed since several years within STMicroelectronics Company to improve Business Intelligence teamwork. Originality/value – The proposed evaluation methodology is based on a user-centered approach.

The intelligent computer system relies on the existence of knowledge. Knowledge refers to a set of facts and rules that describe the domain of interest. The encoded knowledge enables the computer system to interpret and analyze the received information. It also enables the computer system to infer new knowledge from the current facts. The encoded knowledge can include a set of rules that can be captured from the human experts to solve a complex problem such as the disease diagnosis. By this way, the intelligent computer system stimulates the human reasoning that is used to solve problems in an automated way. The process of the symbolization of knowledge in a formal manner in order to be understood by the intelligent systems called knowledge representation. The objective of this paper is the investigation of the major knowledge representation techniques. Furthermore, the paper presents a framework proposal for a comparative study to clarify the difference between the knowledge representation techniques.
Cocreating Corporate Knowledge with a Wiki

Wikis have a growing reputation on the open Internet for producing evolving stores of shared knowledge. However, such democratic systems are often treated with suspicion within corporations for management, legal, social, and other reasons. This article describes a field study of a corporate Wiki that has been developed to capture, and make available, organisational knowledge in a large manufacturing company as an initiative of their Knowledge Management (KM) program. As this approach to KM is a controversial and rapidly changing phenomenon, a Q Methodology research approach was selected to uncover employees-subjective attitudes to the Wiki. Activity Theory was used to provide a deeper interpretation of the findings of the Q-study. The results are enabling the firm to more fully exploit the potential of the Wiki as a ubiquitous tool for successful tacit and explicit knowledge management as more employees are encouraged to participate in a process of cocreating the store of corporate knowledge. The article also demonstrates how meaningful and rigorous research on this new democratic direction of corporate KM should continue.

The knowledge-based theory of a firm suggests that knowledge is the only remaining sustainable resource that can provide competitive advantage in dynamic environments. Knowledge is a key resource that must be actively managed if manufacturing companies wish to achieve success in the decades ahead. Knowledge management refers to the ability to capture and leverage what employees know in order to share efficiencies or create innovative new products, processes or systems. It is an emerging discipline that promotes an integrated approach to identifying, managing and sharing all of an enterprise's information assets. However, research indicates that manufacturing enterprises are are not exploiting the full potential of knowledge management tools and techniques. In other words, they are finding it difficult to implement knowledge based practices. This failure can be attributed to organisations' lack of understanding of ways in which knowledge workers communicate and operate through social processes of collaborating, sharing knowledge and building on each other's ideas. With this in mind, this paper aims to provide a better understanding of the concept of knowledge and knowledge related issues in a manufacturing environment. More specifically, it discusses how actively managing knowledge can enable product and process innovation by ensuring that appropriate, accurate, reliable and timely information and knowledge is being applied to decisions. The knowledge process is identified and examined in some detail. The substantive element of the research centres on establishing the design goals or functional requirements needed to build a knowledge management solution for product innovation. This Groupware based information system is being designed specifically to facilitate the sharing and integration of product related information and knowledge in a manufacturing environment.
Building the knowledge map: an industrial case study

Recently, research interest in knowledge management has grown rapidly. Much research on knowledge management is conducted in academic and industrial communities. Utilizing knowledge accumulated in an organization can be a strategic weapon to acquire a competitive advantage. Capturing and representing knowledge is critical in knowledge management. This paper proposes a practical methodology to capture and represent organizational knowledge. The methodology uses a knowledge map as a tool to represent knowledge. We explore several techniques of knowledge representation and suggest a roadmap with concrete procedures to build the knowledge map. A case study in a manufacturing company is provided. Knowledge Management Framework using Wiki-based Front-end Modules

Nowadays organizations have been pushed to speed up the rate of industrial transformation to high value products and services. The capability to agilely respond to new market demands became a strategic pillar for innovation, and knowledge management could support organizations to achieve that goal. However, such knowledge management approaches tend to be over complex or too academic, with interfaces difficult to manage, even more if cooperative handling is required. Nevertheless, in an ideal framework, both tacit and explicit knowledge management should be addressed to achieve knowledge handling with precise and semantically meaningful definitions. Contributing towards this direction, this paper proposes a framework capable of gathering the knowledge held by domain experts through a widespread wiki look interface, and transforming it into explicit ontologies. This enables to build tools with advanced reasoning capacities that may support enterprises decision-making processes.
