Assessment of Wave Energy Potential at the Shores of Sinop, Black Sea, Turkey
Wave energy potential at Sinop, Black Sea, Turkey has been assessed in this paper. A 35 year long wave dataset from ECMWF-ERA-Interim dataset has been acquired and processed to evaluate wave features and wave power. It has been found out that the site has a low wave energy potential of 2.1 kW/m with large seasonal fluctuations. Furthermore, bathymetrical features of the site also restrict the application of offshore devices due to depths exceeding 2 kilometres in short distance from offshore. Opposing some findings based on other studies, the site is not feasible for wave energy extraction, excluding temporary installations for a micro-plant.

In this study, the coastal waves of Amir Abad Port are simulated using Mike21-SW Model. The data in this research including the bathymetry and fetch were obtained from the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography. Moreover, the wind data was acquired from Babolsar synoptic station, and the wave data were obtained from Amir Abad and Neka buoys. First, semi-analytical wave prediction methods such as SPM and CEM were used to determine the wave characteristics on offshore. Following that, the wave characteristics in the study area were simulated by Mike21 using unstructured meshes with approximate netting of 0.005 geographical degree and initial and boundary conditions. The results of the semi-analytical methods and the simulations were compared with the data from Amir Abad and Neka buoys, and they were calibrated based on the buoys’ data. The results showed that Mike21 is more appropriate than the semi-analytical methods for predicting the coastal waves in the study area. Considerin...
Evaluation of the Wave Climate Over the Black Sea: Field Observations and Modeling
Coastal Engineering Proceedings
The knowledge of the wave climate is one of the most important data for application of coastal engineering, which includes coastal structure design, sediment transport, coastal erosion and so on. Due to the lack of measurements in many region and high cost of wave measurements, coastal engineers have to estimate wave characteristics using a variety of methods, which comprise empirical and numerical solutions. A variety of empirical and numerical methods have been developed and used for determining wave characteristics. In this study, in order to determine wave climate over the Black Sea, it was used third generation Mike 21 spectral wave model. For this purpose, a series of numerical models were conducted in a way to cover the 13-year period between 1996 and 2008. The obtained results from numerical models were compared to the results of Wind and Deep Water Wave Atlas for Turkish Coasts. It was concluded that the results were highly consistent each other.

The prediction of ocean waves is a highly challenging task in coastal and water engineering in general due to their very high randomness. In the present case study, an analysis of wind, sea flow features, and wave height in the southern coasts of the Caspian Sea, especially in the off-coast sea waters of Mazandaran Province in Northern Iran, was performed. Satellite altimetry-based significant wave heights associated with the period of observation in 2016 were validated based on those measured at a buoy station in the same year. The comparative analysis between them showed that satellite-based wave heights are highly correlated to buoy data, as testified by a high coefficient of correlation r (0.87), low Bias (0.063 m), and root-mean-squared error (0.071 m). It was possible to assess that the dominant wave direction in the study area was northwest. Considering the main factors affecting wind-induced waves, the atmospheric framework in the examined sea region with high pressure was i...

The wave parameters are the important factor in the offshore and near-shore activities. The choice of the appropriate parametric method for wave parameters calculation has a significant impact on the design of maritime structures (such as; fixed offshore platform, marine terminal jetty, harbor, ... etc.) from the cost point of view. Several parametric methods have been used to predict wave parameters that have been based on data from certain areas of the sea. These methods are still used in many Coastal areas such as the coast of Egypt. Therefore, evaluating the performance of these methods based on the measured data of the coast of Egypt is very important because of many recent discoveries of oil and gas. In this study, P-M, SPM and CEM methods were used to predict the 3 hourly significant wave height (Hs) and significant wave period (Ts). The data used in evaluation are significant wave heights (Hs), significant wave periods (Ts), wind speed (u) and fetch length (F). This data measured in the offshore area of Alexandria and Port Said located on the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This study aims to find optimal parametric method that we can used safely in the prediction of wave parameters of this region. The results indicated that the P-M method with some modification in the significant wave period equation gave the best results in the prediction of wave parameters than other methods.
