It has been widely recognized that effective leadership is essential for healthcare organizations and healthcare systems to provide high quality care and financial success. It has been realized that the quality of leadership is crucial to how work gets done in an organization. People who are managing healthcare organizations and healthcare systems need leadership ability and skills because they depend on their employees for effective work execution. The lack of adequate understanding of the essentials of medical leadership and healthcare leadership may make healthcare professionals and doctors who are not having obvious managerial responsibilities unable to take leadership roles in medicine and healthcare resulting in the creation of a gap between them and the managers. The aim of this book is to describe an accredited training course entitled Medical and Healthcare Leadership which will serve as a compendium and a useful guidebook for professional trainers working in this field. The knowledge and skills acquired during the course will help the participants to think and work to improve the medical practices and health services in their organizations and institutions.

Strategic Leadership in Nursing

IntechOpen eBooks, 2023

Managing the complex healthcare facility in a lower middle-income country (LMIC) such as Ghana can be challenging and demands management principles that would enable the leader to be conscious of the significant role of the environment. Nurses and midwives constitute majority of the health workforce, play pivotal role in healthcare delivery, consuming most of the resources in managing patient care, and promote the corporate image of the facility. Nurse leaders should exhibit practical leadership skills that would enable effective utilization of the capabilities of staff to achieve organizational goals and prominence in the environment. Long-term viability and competitiveness of the healthcare system demands cost-effective strategies using organizational competencies to take advantage of the opportunities within the environment. Leadership, therefore, becomes essential by initiating a vision that harnesses the potential of staff and stakeholders to this commitment. To withstand time and change, strategic leadership principles such as setting high standards of excellence, demonstrating exceptional performance, and constantly delivering value are imminent. Strategic leadership in nursing ensures provision of leadership strategies that would enhance effective teams and mitigate existing challenges confronting the health system. The paper finds that nursing as a profession is incessantly evolving and, hence, requires strong and dynamic leadership.

Healthcare leadership

Leadership in Health Services, 2009

Purpose -The purpose of this article is to study the impact of two leadership programmes for healthcare managers regarding their attitudes to, and views on, their leadership. Design/methodology/approach -A total of 53 managers participated in two different leadership programmes i.e. one-week (OW-DGL) intensive leadership course and long-term support groups. Of those, 39 (74 per cent) responded to the Wheel Questionnaire, both soon before and six months after the end of their respective leadership programmes. Overall, eight focus group interviews were conducted, and the data were analysed through content analysis. Findings -Both leadership programmes seem to have strengthened the managers in their leadership roles. The OW-DGL course supported the managers in learning about group dynamics and relationship-orientated leadership. The programmes' methods differed, but the conclusion is that they complemented each other. The long-term support groups helped the managers to structure and cope with everyday leadership situations in their occupational environment. Practical implications -The OW-DGL course was found to be good for inexperienced managers and the long-term support groups for more experienced managers. Originality/value -There is a lack of intervention studies regarding the efficacy of leadership programmes directed toward managers in health care. Two different approaches to leadership training are compared in this paper, using both quantitative and qualitative methods.

Leadership development is not done solely to improve the leadership skills of one individual but is an essential component of the development of the organization as a whole. Progressive health systems that invest in leadership development for the entire senior management team will have the more significant return on investment in terms of organizational effectiveness.

Leadership and Its Effect on Health Management

Leadership in health care focuses mainly on achieving the goal of effective health care delivery as a team under the guidance of another team member. Leadership in the health sector has become a key point in improving patient safety and health management as a whole. Delivering effective health care services to patients may be more efficient when health care professionals unite and act as a single body that is patient oriented. By developing a structure where leadership influences health management, the outcome of services rendered to patients is being greatly ameliorated. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has outlined a number of actions which health care organizations need to implement in order to improve patient safety. The Baldrige National Quality Program also recognizes the importance of leaders and has stated the roles of leaders and what is expected of them in order to achieve excellence in health care.
