The recent focus has been on 'purpose of trip' as the correlate for segmentation. The authors describe the methods and results of a study which investigated the usefulness of segmentation by purpose of trip through a case study of tourism and travel to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and relating it to segmentation by other traditional correlates.
Quebec and Ontario Travellers in the Caribbean. An Exploratory Analysis of Their Motivations

In the past three decades, the Caribbean has experienced an increase in international tourism. According to the World Tourism Organisation (WTO), in 2011, the Caribbean accommodated 20.8 million international arrivals, or 2.1% of all world arrivals (WTO, 2012). Although there can be many reasons prompting a desire to travel and attracting a tourist to a destination, it seems important to explore the motivational factors which justify the choice of the Caribbean as a vacation destination. As such, the primary objective of this study is to define and measure the socio-economic factors that influence the stays of Quebecers and Ontarians in the Caribbean and to explain their similarities and differences. In a web survey of 601 Quebecers and 602 Ontarians, the cultural, economic, psycho-sociological and environmental aspects involved in the choice of a destination were evaluated. This approach was exploratory, since it used a non- representative sample of the population of these two Canadian provinces. In this article, we first present our reflection on the motivations and factors involved in the decision to travel. The research methodology is then explained, followed by the findings and a discussion. As part of a comprehensive approach to the tourism consumer and the factors in destination choice, our research suggests new avenues for the marketing activities of destination countries and travel agencies that will more effectively meet the expectations of Canadian tourists travelling to the Caribbean.
Tourist’s Segmentation Based on Culture as their Primary Motivation

In a crowded global marketplace, destinations are competing against each other to attract tourists; and culture is one of the most important elements in the tourism product, as it offers an authentic and distinctive trait to the destination. Not only does it trigger the tourist’s “visitability”, but also encourages the local people and investors for profitability objectives. Therefore, public authorities and private actors capitalize on cultural resources to enhance the region’s attractiveness. This paper aims to evaluate the perception of international cultural tourists towards the importance and performance of Penang Island tourism attributes. To fulfil the objectives, both activities-based analysis and importance-performance analysis were applied. The former was applied to identify international cultural tourists amongst all tourists to Penang, whereas the latter evaluated their perception of Penang tourism attributes. The findings reveal that Penang international cultural tourists primarily perceive the image of Penang according to its World Heritage Site status. Additionally, Penang’s cultural and historical uniqueness were the second most important attributes with satisfactory performance, ranking just after the island’s image. A discussion of the results and suggestions for further studies were presented within this paper.
Towards a classification of cultural tourists

This paper proposes a model to segment the cultural tourism market according to two dimensions: (i) the importance of cultural motives in the decision to visit a destination and (ii) depth of experience. The model is tested empirically using Hong Kong as a case study. The test identified five discrete cultural tourism market segments that exhibited substantially different behaviour. Understanding Canadian and US tourists: A self-concept based segmentation study

This study aims to identify the distinctive market segments based on tourists’ self-concept, gain a better understanding of U.S. and Canadian tourists’ travel patterns, and provide implications that are beneficial to destination marketing organizations (DMOs). This study advances the knowledge of self-concept in the tourism context by validating its measurement and employing it as a segmentation base. This study used 2 percent of cases (N=1,012) of secondary data collected by an Ontario government agency, and a factor-cluster approach for analysis. Principal component analysis was utilized to identify specific characteristics of self-concept items and the results yielded three selves (extravert self, explorative self, and depressive self). Psychographic and Demographic Profiles of Niche Market Leisure Travelers

Telephone interviews were conducted with 417 respondents in 12 U.S. states. The activities that received the highest interests were outdoor recreation, local fairs and festivals, art and cultural attractions, pioneer and frontier history sites, and cowboy and old West attractions. The results of discriminant analyses indicated that individuals cannot be successfully classified into groups of "enthusiasts," "interested," and "uninterested" for any of the tourism niches on the basis of psychographic characteristics. However, the results of MANOVAs revealed distinctive psychographic and demographic profiles of leisure travelers who were attracted to each of the tourism niches.
