Gender Patterns in Faculty Participation: A Decade of Experience at a Mid-sized University (original) (raw)

This article examines the progress made at a mid-sized Ontario university in reducing gender differences in faculty participation and experience of participation in university administration, decision-making, teaching, research, and other professional activities. Based on a survey of female and male faculty and the report of a Task Force on the Integration of Female Faculty, a number of recommendations were to be implemented beginning in the 1992/93 academic year. Progress is examined in light of a commitment to integration based on the principles of inclusion, visibility of procedure, equitable treatment, and climate of support. The article concludes by discussing issues related to participation, which have relevance beyond the specifics of this case.

Female Faculty in Higher Education

The number of women in higher education is growing. Yet, challenges exist for female faculty in the academy. The purpose of this study is to examine the strategies used by female faculty in parks, recreation, sport, tourism, and leisure programs as they negotiate their careers in higher education. Data were collected using an online survey that was distributed to university women who subscribed to recreation-related listservs. Responses to open-ended questions in the survey indicate that female faculty negotiate three types of politics associated with careers in higher education: charting a career path (i.e., the politics of higher education), addressing workplace dynamics (i.e., the politics of gender), and having it all (i.e., the politics of caring). Together, the means for negotiating these politics were associated with hope and with the importance of faculty members' acquisition of social capital.
Promising Organizational Practices for Increasing Faculty Gender Equity: A Case Study
Organizational change is hard. Even when individuals in organizations wish to make changes, generating new behaviors and practices is extremely challenging. Since academic institutions are relatively nonhierarchical and prize professional judgments by faculty in their departments, consistent change through the entire organization can be quite hard to achieve. Change can also be particularly difficult when attitudes feeding particular behaviors are based in deeply held cultural stereotypes.
Gendered Facets of Faculty Careers and Challenges to
Women faculty remain underrepresented in many science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in both Australia and the United States. Given the current interest in developing engineering education as a profession in its own right, it is necessary for engineering educators to examine and understand the experiences and working conditions of engineering faculty members. Otherwise, professionalization efforts risk ignoring and perpetuating gendered facets of faculty careers. Furthermore, those gendered facets of faculty careers stand as potential barriers to the successful promotion of engineering educator identities. Better understandings of the experiences of female faculty are necessary because gender biases of faculty careers often go unnoticed or unvoiced and therefore remain unproblematized as neutral features of academia.

The ADVANCE IT-Catalyst project, “Establishing the Foundation for Future Organizational Reform and Transformation at Rochester Institute of Technology” is a three-year study across six colleges which include computing, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines funded through the National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation – CATALYST (project # 0723719, http://nsfadvance.rit.edu/). The research objective is to identify barriers for current women STEM faculty in regards to rank, tenure, career advancement, leadership role progression, and resource allocation in order to establish how well the university addresses issues that have been found to be important in the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women faculty.
