Moreover, the opinions of teachers, academicians, school principals and inspectors regarding the preschool education programs were also examined.

Children make a rapid development physically, cognitively and affectively in preschool educational period (age 0-6). The cognitive dimension of a child at preschool age is creative, independent and imaginary. The imagination unceasingly works. This period is regarded as the time that the children have high potential of learning and developing. Thus, the quality of preschool education affects the higher educational success and even the lifelong success of the child. Therefore the aims of the research are to emphasize the importance of preschool education on the development of the child, to make a comparison between the preschool education of Turkey and other developed countries and to support preschool education by explaining why and how the preschool education in Turkey should be improved. In this research, case study method from data collection methods was used; related written and electronic resources were collected, analyzed and interpreted in line with the research purpose. The following suggestions are developed in order to improve the preschool education in Turkey: Service delivery models that increase the participation to preschool education should be varied; the preschool educational facilities should be extended supporting the access of regions with limited financial means and regulations that decreasing the educational costs of families should be adopted. For all children, especially for families with low income, preschool educational institutions should be free like in more than half of European Union countries or preschool educational costs should be arranged in accordance with family incomes and other criterion, and families should be supported. The improvement and development priority should be given to preschool educational stage, accordingly physical resources (building, materials, substructure) and human resources (manager, educator, deputy manager and support staff) should be provided. Besides preschool teaching departments should be opened in faculties of education in universities and the quota of preschool teaching departments should be increased.
Beginning early childhood education teachers' problems in Turkey

The purpose of this paper is to explain problems of beginning early childhood education teachers in Turkey and how could teacher education programs be improved in order to reduce these difficulties. The general complaints of a novice teacher, mostly, resulted from the discrepancy between the teacher training and the actual teaching experience. Another problem that beginning teachers might encounter originated from regional differences. In some parts, beginning teachers find themselves in a situation that they have to teach children who cannot speak Turkish. Finally, most of the provincial universities are struggling with lack of qualified academic staff.
An Analysis of Graduate Theses on Early Childhood Education: The Case of Turkey

The primary concern of this study is to reveal the general tendencies (genders of the authors/supervisors, change in the number of graduate theses by year, number of research problems-results-suggestions, focal points, the corpus by research models/methods, data collection methods/tools, and population/sample group) of graduate on early childhood education in Turkey between 2005 and 2017. The sampling of the present research study consists of 182 graduate theses. The study relies on the retrieval of the desired data by document analysis through a systematic examination of the available theses by using a thesis examination form developed by the researchers. The results revealed that 85% of the authors were female and almost half of the supervisors were assistant professors and moreover 59% of the supervisors were female. The study also showed that a great majority of the examined theses contained 0-10 research problems, results and suggestions. It was also figured out in the study that the focal point of the thesesis majorly qualifications of preschool teachers, characteristics and tendencies of parents, effects of different approaches/methods on early childhood education, characteristics of children in early childhood education or at preschool age. It was observed that 68.1% of graduate theses were quantitative studies and that the least employed research method was observation (0.5%), case study (1.1%), interview (1.6%) and phenomenological method (1.6%), while the most frequently administered data collection tool, accounting for 65%, was questionnaire.

Early childhood education is a very important period for the education and development of the child. A radical change occurred in 1994 regarding the basic philosophy of the national early childhood education curriculum which is being implemented in Turkey. An education program centered on subjects and teachers was being utilized as a general approach in the education institutions of Turkey before 1994; since then, an approach centered on the child has been utilized. This curriculum was reviewed between 2002 and 2006. The current curriculum which has been followed in Turkey since 2006 is a curriculum based on child-centered developmental goals and prioritizing parent involvement issues. In this study, preschool programs implemented from past to present in Turkey together with parent involvement facilities are examined and processes of development and change are elaborated in detail.
The Study of Preschool Teachers’ and Principals’ Opinions on Turkish Education System

The present study conducted with preschool teachers and principals working in preschool educational institutions in Alanya, a district of the province Antalya. In the study group, there were 89 female participants that were determined via easy sampling method. Qualitative research method and content analysis technique were used to analyze the data. When the findings are examined in line with the sub-goals, it was seen that the ideas were gathered under four categories: “General education system”, “teacher's rights”, “family” and “other”. The most important problems expressed in this direction were the quality of the education system, continuously changing programs and applications, inequality of opportunities, test-focused system, crowded classes, lack of funds supporting education, teaching in the form of double-schedule education. Considering the importance of how perceptions of teachers affect their practice in early childhood education, the purpose of the current study was to examine how teachers perceive children's developmental and educational experiences in relation to children's learning outcomes perceived by teachers. We recruited 219 preschool teachers (90.9% are female) from different regions of Turkey via an online survey. Teachers' age ranged from 20 to 53 years old (Mean [M] = 27.83, standard deviation [SD] = 5.66) and 57.5% of them were single. Average teaching experience was 4.62 years (SD = 4.85), which ranged from one to 31 years. Teachers reported on their perceptions of the importance given to children's developmental and educational experiences, and children's learning outcomes. Results from canonical correlations showed that the importance given to educational and developmental experiences of children, and the importance to children's learning outcomes were significantly associated. Further, the importance of the current findings in early childhood education is discussed.
An Examination of Articles Published on Preschool Education in Turkey
This study aims to examine articles published in Turkey on Preschool Education both in terms of subject and method. Sample of the study based on document analysis in qualitative method consists of seven Turkey-based journals indexed in SSCI (Social Science Citation Index) and 10 journals indexed in Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM). Descriptive statistics related to selected articles were first provided and then evaluations made through criteria form developed according to “Criteria for Evaluating Studies in Social Sciences” that Kırcaali-İftar edited from Gay and Airasian were provided. Among the journals examined are “Educational Sciences: Theory & Practice” and “Elementary Education Online” journals in which most articles on preschool education were published. Journals examined were classified into five categories based on their subjects. Most of the studies in the selected articles focused on “education in preschool education grade”. Among these articles, articles focusing on “language teaching, games and science teaching” were examined. Most of the studies were descriptive studies. Questionnaires/scales, interview forms and tests were used as data collection tools and parametric analyses were used in data analysis. There is not any problem in reporting aims, results and suggestions parts of the studies, however, there are serious problems in model, population, sample, reliability and validity and data analysis of the studies examined and there is not any information related to representation rate of sample in the population. Also, while there is information regarding the reliability, there is not sufficient information on validity of studies.
