Presence Management and Merging Presence Information for NGN Services

This paper describes an approach for interworking scenarios between Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based and non SIP based frameworks (e.g. web services) in case of the presence management service. The characteristics of the concept of a centralized presence management will be introduced. Based on the Parlay X web service framework a presence management service solution has been developed, deployed and tested. The re-usability of the developed presence management service solution within an IP Television (IPTV) framework and the future potential of the presence service in various IPTV applications are analyzed.
An Architectural Framework for Network Convergence Through Application Level Presence Signaling

Over the past few years we have witnessed steady progress toward convergence in communications. We believe we are now witnessing convergence beyond just media transport. Further, abstract application level signaling technologies are poised for takeoff and will serve as the unifying fabric for multi-dimensional convergence. Our research shows that such a signaling mechanism known as "presence", combined with advances in namespace and security technology, will enable ultimate service innovations.
On Analysing Cost for Optimizing the Watcher Subscription Time in the IMS Presence Service

IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is the technology that will merge the Internet (packet switching) with the cellular world (circuit switching). Presence is one of the basic services which is likely to become omnipresent in IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem). It is the service that allows a user to be informed about the reachability, availability, and willingness of communication of another user. The flow of messages will be massive for large amount of publishers and watchers joining an IMS system, because of the security architecture of the IMS. Although the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) engineers have proposed several solutions to reduce the signalling overhead to facilitate the presence service, the heavy traffic flows have been compromised with several factors like real time view and information segregation etc. The life time of a watcher subscription has not received any attention so far. The constant time set (both short and long) may create bottleneck because of excessive message flow in the network. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model to analyse the system-performance of the IMS presence service during heavy traffic. The model derives the cost functions that are based on the real parameters of the Presence Server. An algorithm is demonstrated based on the derived model to set up an optimal life time for the Presence Server to assign to its joining IMS watchers during busy traffic. Simulation results have been shown that provide useful insight into the system behaviour.
A weakly consistent scheme for IMS presence service

IP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem (IMS) provides presence service for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). In IMS, the presence server is responsible for notifying an authorized watcher of the updated presence information. If the updates occur more frequently than the accesses of the watcher, the presence server will generate many notifications. This paper uses a weakly consistent scheme (called delayed update) to reduce the notification traffic. In this scheme, a delayed timer is defined to control the notification rate. We propose an analytic model and simulation experiments to investigate the performance of delayed update. The study indicates that delayed update can effectively reduce the notification traffic without significantly degrading the valid access probability.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Presence Service
In this article we are going to study some advantages and disadvantages of using Presence Service. There are several applications that are using Presence Service nowadays and in the future new ones, not even envisaged, could use Presence Service. A good example of these applications is Push-totalk over Cellular (PoC) that is implemented in some phones for 2G and 3G networks. I describe the Presence architecture for PoC and others Presence architectures in different environments such as the Internet. In this way we can see how the idea of converging networks can empower the advantages of Presence service. Some user scenarios are analysed which present some advantages of Presence Service but that present several challeges that new technologies have to address. Finally, I will present some conclusions and ideas of how the disadvantages of Presence Service can be overcome.
A Distributed Presence Service over Epidemic Multicast

A bstract. In a dynamic distributed system with a very large number of nodes, such as a cloud, it is sometimes useful to discover the nodes that are up in the system at a given time. The number of those nodes changes continually along the operation time, as some nodes crash and some join the system. In this paper we introduce a presence service that was implemented over a gossip structure using an epidemic multicast protocol. Unlike other common presence services, our service is fully distributed. Due to epidemic dissemination and inherent redundancy provided by the multicast protocol, the service is resilient against message loss and link crashes. In a scenario we developed to evaluate the efficiency and scalability of our presence service, we show how presence notifications propagate to reach all nodes in the group and we also show how adjustments for the gossip configuration can benefit the efficiency and resilience of the notification dissemination. The results of the experimental evaluation show that following a distributed approach over epidemic communication leads to a resilient and scalable presence service.
On the Performance of Employing Presence Services in P2P-Based Network Management Systems
The use of notifications to report the status of underlying communication networks has a crucial impact on the performance of the managed network itself. Presence services , which are implemented using notification messages, have been designed with the objective to provide ways of delivering accurate presence information to interested parties. However, up to now, the use of presence services in the network management discipline has not been properly addressed. Is this paper, we propose an architecture that introduces presence services into traditional network management processes. We evaluated, through a system prototype implementation, the feasibility of using diverse presence services solutions as management tools and compare their performance against to each other. We present the results of a set of experiments regarding the propagation delay of the two main steps of a presence service, i.e., registration and notification. Those results allows a network administrator to choose which presence service solution is more adequate for the administrator's necessities, thus helping to improve the notification process.

Instant messaging coupled with presence and availability management services is emerging as a killer application in both wireless and wire-line networks. This led to the emergence of a number of standard protocols (SIP/SIMPLE, Wireless Village, JABBER etc.) in addition to proprietary protocols (MSN, Yahoo!, AOL etc.) and standard APIs (JAIN SIMPLE, JAIN Presence, JAIN Instant Messaging, PAM, JAIN PAM, etc.).
PreQuEst: A scalable and proactive quality enrichment for presence services

The market growth of VoIP infrastructures and services is pushing towards additional facilities to enrich service offer in an open way, thus representing also a differentiating aspect and a competitive advantage for service providers. We claim that the proactive provisioning of estimations about runtime VoIP quality is a crucial facility still missing in VoIP services: for instance, such a facility could be integrated within a Presence Service to inform users of expected quality of VoIP communications towards their contacts before calling them. The paper proposes a novel and scalable solution for proactive quality monitoring, specifically designed for VoIP traffic and based on proper runtime decisions about network partitioning. On top of this monitoring layer, we have designed and implemented an effective and flexible application-level facility for end-to-end QoS estimation, exploited by an enriched Presence Service in the examined case study. The paper describes the practical experience and the lessons learned in implementing an industrial prototype of the proposal, which is integrated with standard and widespread mechanisms (e.g., SIP Voice Quality Report Event, SIP Answer Mode and SDP Media Loopback extensions) in order to facilitate market diffusion and acceptance. First preliminary experimental results show that the proposed prototype achieves accurate quality evaluations and is largely more scalable than traditional end-to-end approaches.
