Context: With the rapid expansion of ATEPs in the last decade, the demand for doctoral-trained athletic training educators has increased exponentially. As more athletic training educators enter higher education, it is important to fully understand how well prepared these educators are for life in academe. Objective: To describe employment characteristics, educational histories, and pedagogical training of athletic training educators. Design: Descriptive study. Setting: Entry-level undergraduate and graduate ATEPs Patients or Other Participants: The Demographic and Educational History Questionnaire (DEHQ) was distributed to 338 program directors (PDs) of CAATE accredited ATEPs. Twenty-four potential respondents were eliminated from the study due to incomplete responses. Thirty percent of PDs (n=102) completed the survey in its entirety. An Exploration of Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles in Athletic Training Education

Athletic training educators teach in didactic, laboratory and clinical settings, all requiring an array of pedagogical strategies to effectively instruct students. Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles is a theoretical framework to support pedagogical decision making in physical education. The purpose of the commentary is to examine teaching styles from Mosston’s Spectrum in the context of athletic training education. A general introduction, review of comparative literature and practical application to athletic training education is provided for each of the eleven teaching styles. The examination and application of educational theory from other disciplines may provide athletic training educators additional resources to enhance student learning.
This study is aimed at examining physical education student teachers' experiences with, beliefs about, and intention to use Spectrum teaching styles in the future . Two hundred and eighty eight Physicak Education student teachers participated in the study whereas data were collected using a modified and translated version of the questionnaire developed by Cothran, Kulinna, and Ward's (2000). Participants in the study reported that as primary and secondary education students they had been more frequently exposed to reproduction teaching styles in their physical education classes whereas exposure to what can be described as productive styles had been substantially less frequent. In terms of beliefs, student teachers participating in the study perceive that the reproduction teaching styles provide students with more opportunities for fun, learning skills, and motivation for learning. In addition, as physical education instructors in the future student teachers stated that they are keener on implementing teaching styles from the reproduction cluster. Finally, the finding of the study confirmed student teachers' conceptions about their students' learning process influenced by their prior experiences as school students.
Attributes of an exemplary curriculum in entry-level undergraduate athletic training education

Athletic training is an allied health profession that is currently undergoing reform of its educational curriculum standards and requirements for education programs. The profession continues to evolve in the academic preparation of future athletic trainers through improvements in the didactic and experiential aspects o f the curriculum. Nevertheless initial passing rates on the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board o f Certification (NATABOC) examination are consistently low. The purpose o f this study was to examine entry-level undergraduate athletic training curricula accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) to determine what elements constitute an exemplary curriculum and to formulate a model of an exemplary curriculum for others to replicate.

Context As health professions education continues to transition toward competency-based education, it is essential that educators have an in-depth understanding of student competence and how it is achieved. However, little is known concerning the perceptions of educators regarding student competence in athletic training. Objective To explore athletic training educators' perceptions of student competence. Design Cross-sectional. Setting Online survey with open-ended questions. Patients or Other Participants In total, 368 of 1577 athletic training educators accessed the survey (23.3% access rate); 327 were included in data analysis because they indicated they served as an athletic training educator at the time of data collection and completed at least 1 open-ended question.
