This research investigates the importance of writing skills in English for academic purposes (EfAP) courses and compares students' responses to their own English writing needs, their ability to perform and their priorities in their foreign language writing. The specific aspects examined were the prevalent types of academic writing in secondary school, the focus of teacher feedback to essays written in English, and the nature of academic writing required in university writing assignments. The survey of school writing involved 235 students enrolled in English courses in two Malaysian universities and the analysis of university writing tasks was across faculty in the universities. The results indicated that the main types of writing done in school were expository writing and narratives whereas the university writing encompasses expositions, explanations and classification essays. In addition, the emphasis in school essays was grammatical accuracy and general writing skills rather than shaping of text content to suit the communicative purpose and the context in which the language is used. The survey highlights the conceptualisations of academic writing that needs to be addressed before dealing with the particularities of contextual and social meanings in academic writing.

Writing, as a way to explore our passive English is not merely intended to describe any topic without purposes. In this case, writing is a progressive activity. Oshima and Hogue (1997:2) explain the meaning of progressive in writing is when we want to start the first step to write about a certain topic, actually we have already known what we are going to write and how we explore it. After that, we read over our writing than we will do some corrections and also changes. In short, in order to have a better writing we should never stop only in one step. The more particular and specific urgency in writing is how to make our writing academic. This is what the most college students face in their writing tasks such as essays and final projects which become the requirement for them to finish their study in a university.
