The Sanctuary of Demeter at the ancient city of Naxos has been known by virtue of the older excavations conducted by N. M. Kontoleon, N. Zapheiropoulos and Chr. Doumas in the area of the modern Gymnasion of the city. At least six wells were excavated. They had been used as repositories for the mass deposition of votives of the Sanctuary. In January 2019 important archive material was discovered at the Historical Archive of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. It is a formal documentation of an unknown, until now, excavation of N.M. Kontoleon at the area of the Gymnasion, dated in 1954. The finds from that excavation had already been recovered at the Naxos’ Museum in 2017. In the current paper, this new archive material is presented and commented. An attempt is made to place this excavation in the chronological context of the early ’50s and to associate its findings with the research interests of N. M. Kontoleon in the Cyclades. Finally, possible answers is attempted to be offered to the following central questions: where exactly was the Sanctuary located; under which circumstances and when it vanished completely, leaving absolutely no traces of its buildings today.
