Developing indexes of efficiency in basketball: talk with the coaches in their own language
Kinesiology, 2000
Achieving a high level of performance in ball-game activities such as basketball depends upon (a) the technical skill level of the player within the team and of the whole team, and (b) the psychological, mental, and emotional edge over the opposing team. However, both coaches and players seem to emphasise the technical aspects of the game when preparing for a long-duration championship, a tournament, or a single game. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlational relationship among indexes of efficiency, technical and height variables and the final placing of a team in a 9day championship. Morespecifically, two questions were raised in this study: (a) Is it possible to predict the final placing of a team based onits technical playing ability? and, (b) Is it possible to develop appropriate indexes to measure team ability and predict its final success? Based on the data obtained in the European Basketball Championship for teams under 19 years of age, two indexes of efficiency were developed. In addition, nine technical variables of the game of basketball were analysed. Spearman rank-order and Pearson productmoment correlations were used to examine the relationship between each index and variable and the final placing of a team, and the relationships betweenall variables. It was concluded that it was possible to use indexesofefficiency such as index ofplaying ability, and technical variables such as final scores and 2-point percentages, to predict the final ranking of a team. However, in order to promote the prediction process in ball-game activities it is recommended that researchers and practitioners develop multi-face indexes in which psychological, as well as technical, variables are considered.
G Parameters of a Situation Achievement as Indicators of Shooter Efficiency in a Basketball Summary
2019
In the research, which subject was the situation indicators of basketball efficiency, regression analysis was applied in order to determine the impact of the predictor system of 18 variables of situational efficiency on the criterion variable of the total percentage of shots in the match. The sample in this research was 29 basketball matches, KK Budućnost from Podgorica (Montenegro) played in the ABA League for the 2017/18 season. The obtained results have determined that the predictor system with almost 100% of success predicts the outcome of the overall efficiency of the percentage of shots at the match. Individually speaking, it was concluded that the effectiveness of the shots in the match will solely depend on the parameters of the situational efficiency of one, two and three points shot. Also, it was concluded that other parameters for monitoring the situational efficiency in basketball, provided by FIBA, have no impact on the analyzed criterion variable. In general, it could ...

The aim of this paper is to determine if winning teams can be discriminated from losing teams in basketball on the basis of 6 nonstandard indicators of situational effectiveness in 3 competitions (Regional League; League 6 -final round of Bosnian basketball championship; and Under-16 European basketball championship), two systems of competition (tournament and league), in two categories (senior and under 16). T-test determined the significance of differences in arithmetic means between winning and losing sides in used nonstandard indicators, and discriminative analysis determined the difference as a whole as well as the contribution of each situational indicator to discriminative function. Research results confirm that discriminating winning from losing teams based on newly introduced 6 indicators is possible and justified, and that based on variables which discriminate and make the strongest contribution to discrimination between winning and losing teams one can make a quality analysis of an opponent's game style. On the basis of this information it is possible for a team to correct and improve its own game plan.

Identifying basketball performance indicators in regular season and playoff games
Journal of human kinetics, 2013
The aim of the present study was to identify basketball game performance indicators which best discriminate winners and losers in regular season and playoffs. The sample used was composed by 323 games of ACB Spanish Basketball League from the regular season (n=306) and from the playoffs (n=17). A previous cluster analysis allowed splitting the sample in balanced (equal or below 12 points), unbalanced (between 13 and 28 points) and very unbalanced games (above 28 points). A discriminant analysis was used to identify the performance indicators either in regular season and playoff games. In regular season games, the winning teams dominated in assists, defensive rebounds, successful 2 and 3-point field-goals. However, in playoff games the winning teams' superiority was only in defensive rebounding. In practical applications, these results may help the coaches to accurately design training programs to reflect the importance of having different offensive set plays and also have specif...

Measuring the efficiency of athletes during competition has been a subject of interest both for experts and scientists in sports for more than a hundred years. Basketball has recognized in the 1940s how important it is to analyze efficiency indicators because these procedures allow coaches to increase their knowledge. There are two basic methods – objective and subjective – for evaluating the efficiency, or real quality of basketball players. The aim of this research is to establish the level of correlation between these two methods and to identify clusters, i.e. player hierarchy based on the results of both methods of efficiency evaluation. The sample of variables consisted of 12 basketball players who participated in the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey. The subjective evaluation, also called expert evaluation, was performed by coaches of seven national teams that participated in the Championship. The objective evaluation was performed using the EEF efficiency index. The da...
Comparative analysis of key performance indicators in Euroleague and national basketball leagues
Journal of Physical Education and Sport, 2024
Background: Understanding the performance metrics that underpin team success in the dynamic professional basketball world is crucial. This study originated in the context of increasing academic and professional interest in performance analytics, focusing on how teams in elite leagues, such as the Euroleague and their respective national leagues, adapt and perform based on specific key performance indicators (KPIs). Purpose: The primary objective of this research is to bridge the existing bibliographic gap by comparing the effectiveness of various KPIs in predicting match outcomes in both the Euroleague and National Basketball Leagues. This comparison aims to identify how strategic adaptations and performance measures differ according to the unique demands and styles of the respective competitions. Methodology: The study utilized two main datasets: one encompassing all Euroleague 2022-23 matches and the other compiling cumulative statistics from Euroleague teams over three seasons. Machine learning techniques, including Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and Support Vector Machines, were employed along with the Boruta algorithm for feature selection to enhance predictive accuracy and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for the interpretability of the model output. Results: The analysis identified that certain KPIs, such as the effective field goal percentage, defensive ratings, and assists-to-turnover ratio, vary significantly in their impact on game outcomes between Euroleague and National League games. These variations imply that teams may need to tailor their strategies depending on the league in which they play. Conclusions: This study significantly advances the field of sports analytics by providing a detailed comparative analysis of basketball performance metrics across two competitive settings. It offers practical insights that can help coaches and analysts optimize team performance and strategic planning. Moreover, sophisticated data analysis techniques have allowed for a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics that influence basketball game outcomes, thereby making a significant contribution to the literature and practice of sports performance analysis.

The basic goal of this research was to determine the differences between junior players playing particular positions in the basketball game based on the indicators of situational effi cacy. The sample of examinees consisted of 108 top-level junior basketball players who in average played a minimum of 8 minutes per game and in more than 3 games, and were chosen from 11 teams that played 46 games in the Junior European Championship in Zadar in year 2000. The results show discrepancies in the space of situational effi cacy amongst 5 player positions, as follows: players who play the point guard and the shooting guard are dominant in variables SHOT3-SU, SHOT3-UN, ASSIST, ST and TO. The players who play the position of forward are dominant in variables SHOT2-SU and SHOT2-UN, especially in relation to the power forward and point guard and the shooting guard. Furthermore, the players who play centres can best be distinguished from those playing other positions in variables: DR, OR, BL, SHOT2-SU i PF. We suggest that further research also includes nonstandard parameters of situational effi cacy when analysing differences between elite junior and senior players who play different positions in the game
Original scientific paper ___________________________________________________________________________ Abstract Research was conducted to determine relations among 15 standard indicators of situational effectiveness in basketball and the final score of a basketball game. Data was collected from 50 games in Bosnian League 6, final stage of basketball championships in Bosnia and Herzegovina (league which includes 6 teams who stay in contention for the championship trophy), and 20 games in Regional basketball league (Good Year League) where two teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina took part, "KK Bosna" from Sarajevo and "HKK Siroki" from Siroki Brijeg. Results of regression analysis showed that 3 variables have statistically significant influence on the final score of basketball games in Bosnian League, SO and OL on the level of 99%, and IL on the level of 95%. In Regional Basketball League, those variables are S3US, SBUS, SN, IL and OL, on the level of 99%, and S2US on...
