Approximations of the ruin probability in a discrete time risk model
arXiv: Probability, 2020
Based on a discrete version of the Pollaczeck-Khinchine formula, a general method to calculate the ultimate ruin probability in the Gerber-Dickson risk model is provided when claims follow a negative binomial mixture distribution. The result is then extended for claims with a mixed Poisson distribution. The formula obtained allows for some approximation procedures. Several examples are provided along with the numerical evidence of the accuracy of the approximations.
Practical approaches to the estimation of the ruin probability in a risk model with additional funds
Modern Stochastics: Theory and Applications, 2015
We deal with a generalization of the classical risk model when an insurance company gets additional funds whenever a claim arrives and consider some practical approaches to the estimation of the ruin probability. In particular, we get an upper exponential bound and construct an analogue to the De Vylder approximation for the ruin probability. We compare results of these approaches with statistical estimates obtained by the Monte Carlo method for selected distributions of claim sizes and additional funds.
Ruin probabilities based at claim instants for some non-Poisson claim processes
Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 2000
The paper presents a recursive method of calculating ruin probabilities for non-Poisson claim processes, by looking at the surplus process embedded at claim instants. The developed method is exact. The processes considered have both claim sizes and the inter-claim revenue following selected phase type distributions. The numerical section contains figures derived from the exact approach, as well as a tabular example using the numerical approach of De Vylder and Goovaerts. The application of the method derived in the paper through numerical examples reveals the sensitivity of the value of probability of ruin to changes in claim number process.

In this paper, we present recursive formulae for the ruin probability at or before a certain claim arrival instant for some particular continuous time risk model. The claim number process underlying this risk model is a renewal process with either Erlang or a mixture of exponentials inter-claim times (ICTs). The claim sizes (CSs) are independent and distributed in Erlang's family, i.e., they can have different parameters, which yields a non-homogeneous risk process. We present the corresponding recursive algorithm used to evaluate the above mentioned ruin probability and we illustrate it on several numerical examples in which we vary the model's parameters to assess the impact of the non-homogeneity on the resulting ruin probability.
Sensitivity of risk measures with respect to the normal approximation of total claim distributions
Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 2011
A simple and commonly used method to approximate the total claim distribution of a (possible weakly dependent) insurance collective is the normal approximation. In this article, we investigate the error made when the normal approximation is plugged in a fairly general distribution-invariant risk measure. We focus on the rate of the convergence of the error relative to the number of clients, we specify the relative error's asymptotic distribution, and we illustrate our results by means of a numerical example. Regarding the risk measure, we take into account distortion risk measures as well as distribution-invariant coherent risk measures.
Explicit ruin formulas for models with dependence among risks
Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 2011
We show that a simple mixing idea allows to establish a number of explicit formulas for ruin probabilities and related quantities in collective risk models with dependence among claim sizes and among claim inter-occurrence times. Examples include compound Poisson risk models with completely monotone marginal claim size distributions that are dependent according to Archimedean survival copulas as well as renewal risk models with dependent inter-occurrence times.
On the computation of aggregate claims distributions: some new approximations
Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 1998
This paper proposes a new approximation to the aggregate claims distribution based on the inverse Gaussian (IG) distribution. It is compared to several other approximations in the literature. The IG approximation compares favorably to the well-known gamma approximation. We also propose an IG-gamma mixture that approximates the true distribution extremely accurately, in a large variety of situations.
Approximations of ruin probabilities in mixed Poisson models with lattice claim amounts
Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, 2006
In this work we study uniform error bounds for approximations of the ruin probability in a mixed poisson model with lattice claim amounts. The approximations considered are constructed by rounding the record lows up, down or to the midpoint. We observe how a round-to-the midpoint approximation produces qualitative better results that the other two methods, as in this case we can give error bounds which are uniformly bounded in the parameters of the model. We relate this approximation problem with an appropriate representation of the ruin probability in terms of Steklov operators. In our proofs, we use general results concerning the decrease of the Levy's concentration function for sums of independent and identically distributed random variables.

In this paper we have discussed the infinite time ruin probabilities in continuous time in a compound Poisson process with a constant premium rate for the mixture of exponential claims. Firstly, we have fitted the mixture of two exponential and the mixture of three exponential to a set of claim data and thereafter, have computed the probability of ultimate ruin through a method giving its exact expression and then through a numerical method, namely the method of product integration. The derivation of the exact expression for ultimate ruin probability for the mixture of three and mixture of two exponential is done through the moment generating function of the maximal aggregate loss random variable. Consistencies are observed in the values of ultimate ruin probabilities obtained by both the methods.
