The aim of this paper is to contribute towards debate on the differences and similarities in the behaviour of young secondary school students from different European countries towards the environment. Similarly, its objective is also to act as a starting point for research into educational improvements of a formal and non-formal kind directed at forming future citizens who feel a greater solidarity towards their surrounding environment or, in other words, towards their natural and cultural heritage.
Ecological Awareness of Students in the Light of Surveys
Metody Ilościowe w Badaniach Ekonomicznych, 2017
The paper is an attempt to determine the condition of ecological awarenesspro-environmental attitudes of students from Poland and Slovakia, as well as correlation between the pro-environmental attitude declared by the youth and their place of residence. Apart from willingness to get to know beliefs, opinions and the condition of knowledge in many particular issues related to the subject, the paper has the following purposes: to learn dependence between personal features of people and the condition of their ecological awareness, to determine the degree of consistency of beliefs in different matters relating to the examined problems, to compare the force of interaction of particular sources of information on particular population categories.
Environmental awareness as a universal European value
Serbian Journal of Management, 2016
BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT Environmental protection is one of the basic and fundamental European values. Preservation and improvement of this concept implies a collective partnership action, both within the EU and beyond. In order to facilitate the adoption of environmental (ecological) values and environmentally (ecologically) responsible action, it is necessary to educate citizens, especially young people, about the importance of environmental protection. The research and comparative analysis of the environmental awareness of youth from V4 countries and Serbia as a country in transition, will set the framework for mutual cooperation on the adoption of environmental principles, both the institutional and non-institutional level (Rickinson, 2001; Wray-Lake, et al., 2008).
Environmental Behavior of Youth and Sustainable Development
Sustainability
The relationship between people and nature is one of the most important current issues of human survival. This circumstance makes it necessary to educate young people who are receptive to global challenges and ready to solve the urgent problems of our time. The purpose of the article is to analyze the experience of the environmental behavior of young people in the metropolis. The authors studied articles and monographs that contain Russian and international experience in the environmental behavior of citizens. The following factors determine people’s behavior: the cognitive capabilities of people who determine the understanding and perception of nature and the value-affective component that determines the attitude towards nature. The next task of the study is surveying young people through an online survey and its analysis. The research was realized in Ekaterinburg, the administrative center of the Sverdlovsk region (Russia). The study of the current ecological situation in Ekaterin...
TEME
Worldwide, great efforts are being made in order to establish sustainable development at all levels. European Union (EU) member states are obliged to meet the requirements in the area of environmental protection. In this paper, the authors conducted a comparative study of environmental attitudes among young people from both EU transition countries and EU candidate countries. The objective was to determine the differences in environmental attitudes, environmental awareness and self-efficacy of the youth from these two groups of countries and the EU environmental policy implementation level. Results indicated that the influence of EU membership exists when it comes to the environmental attitudes of youth from the analyzed countries. Average values showed the unsatisfactory situation regarding environmental awareness and self-efficacy of respondents. In order to define the relations among environmental attitudes, self-efficacy and environmental awareness, a structural model was created...
Nature Conservation Research, 2017
The aim of this study was to evaluate environmental awareness of young people and effectiveness of education used by national parks. The research occurred in the period from 2012 to 2014. The Veľká Fatra National Park (Slovakia), Bohemian Switzerland National Park (Czech Republic), Bieszczady National Park (Poland) and Bükki National Park (Hungary) as parks of countries of the Visegrád Group were analysed. The study was focused on the target group of students of gymnasiums and secondary schools in the regions where national parks are located and outside these regions. In all the analysed countries we used a questionnaire, which was distributed among 1301 students. For each respondent, answers were entered in a spreadsheet and statistically analysed. The following non-parametric statistical tests were used: Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman, Wilcoxon and parametric ANOVA. The best results were noted among students from Poland and the Czech Republic. In other countries of the Visegrád Group therefore it is appropriate to introduce actions aiming at increasing the ecological awareness of students, according to the models of education functioning in national parks and schools in Poland and the Czech Republic. It is also necessary to revise the ways in which national environmental education exists in all studied countries, as well as to strengthen volunteer activities.
Environmental attitudes of Hungarian students and the prospects for environmental education
Ecocycles, 2019
The efficiency of primary education is of fundamental importance in environmental education. The aim of this survey was to evaluate the environmental attitudes of young teenagers in Hungary, learning their preferences regarding plants and animals, their reasoning, and opinions about conservation. Therefore, a complex questionnaire containing 11 open questions and 5 closed questions were completed in 2016 for students between the age of 13 and 14 years. This age group was selected based on the curriculum suited the best to this type of investigation and the already advanced level of knowledge for the student. Printed questionnaires were provided to the student attending to primary schools personally, and they were asked to fill them in their class supervised by their teachers to minimalize external influences. There were 744 students living in 92 settlements of different sizes who have filled the questionnaires in 2017. These questionnaires were grouped according to the student' gender, settlement sizes (six categories), and type of home (detached house, apartment building, or prefabricated panel building). Here we report the first results after assessing the questionnaires. According to their preferences toward plants or animals, the great majority of the responders (91.3%) favored animals, and there was no difference between boys and girls in this respect. The size of the settlements and the type of the students' home did not influence animal preference. These results suggest that teachers should particularly focus on plants in their biology and environmental education programs. When students were asked about their favorite plants, almost 80 percent of them gave priority to local plant species, especially flowers (73.1%). More than threequarters (77%) of the families of the students asked have at least one pet or domestic animal, and almost two-thirds (64.4%) of them wish to have even more-although 71.1% of them live in apartment buildings or prefabricated panel buildings. Students meet animals most often (52.8%) locally, and domestic mammals are those animals that the highest proportion (41.8%) of them encounter. More than half (54%) of the children go outdoors/make an excursion at least once in a month, but 11 percent of them have no such experiences. When asked about conservation, 77.7% of the children stated that they would save all of the living creatures, and 12.1% chose to save only the useful ones. This information may help in focusing on special areas for environmental education or developing new strategies and tools for it.
Young people's views on the importance of conserving the environment
Science curricula at all levels of the education system in Trinidad and Tobago stress the importance of sustainable development and, particularly, the role of environmental conservation as a fundamental factor in achieving sustainability. This article discusses the findings of a study of the views of 14-and 15-year-olds on the importance of environmental conservation. The findings reveal that there was general disapproval among young people for human economic activities that threatened the environment. Interviews with students, however, indicated a discernible lack of willingness among students to raise awareness among the general public on issues related to environmental conservation. In general, though, students showed a positive attitude towards the need to conserve the environment.
Youth Attitudes to Nature and Climate Change: Evidence from European Social Survey
Management Theory and Studies for Rural Business and Infrastructure Development, 2023
In the discourse of social sciences, more and more attention is paid to the analysis of nature as a value and the problems of climate change. However, in the context of sustainable development, the attitude of different generations towards nature and climate change is important. Although the youth as a social group is seen as the future generation, it is noticeable that not many studies are conducted in Lithuania, where the opinion of the youth and their responsibility for changes in nature and climate change processes are evaluated. Accordingly, the aim of the researchto determine whether nature and climate change are important to youth in Lithuania. Data from European Social Survey (ESS) Round 10 (2021) were used. Logical analysis and synthesis, comparison method, statistical data analysis were applied, Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated. The research results revealed that youth sufficiently perceive nature as a value and see climate change as a problem that must be not only observed but also solved.
Sustainability
The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of values and social environmental factors on the pro-environmental attitudes of students. A representative survey of 1161 Lithuanian schoolchildren was conducted between October and November 2020. Health was the most important value for students, and for girls, while healthcare was more important for boys. Among the ecological values, unpolluted food, clean air, and fresh water were the most important. For Lithuanian students, school does not play a decisive role in outdoor behavior compared to family, which plays a more important role in outdoor behavior, and friends are the most important influencers of outdoor behavior. Students in Lithuania have a pro-ecological outlook, which is shaped by their interest in and practice of ecology. Students of ECO schools are more responsible than students of regular schools, although they have less pro-environmental attitudes compared to students of regular schools.
