Factors Influencing Student-Athletes’ Identity: A Multilevel Regression and Poststratification Approach

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2020

We considered identity variation among Brazilian university student-athletes in relation to their gender, sport type, competition level, and university type. Participants were 506 student-athletes (219 males and 287 females) from public and private Brazilian universities, competing in team and individual sports, at local, state, and national levels. We used multilevel regression and poststratification to estimate each participant’s identity from the aforementioned variables. Gender and sport type were not associated with any substantial identify variation, but there were higher values on Baller Identity Measurement Scale dimensions for student-athletes from public versus private universities, and student-athletes competing at the highest level had lower Baller Identity Measurement Scale values compared to peers competing at lower levels. Overall, university type and sport competitive level were the contextual factors that most influenced Brazilian student-athletes’ identities.

Study of self-identity and social identity differences of national athletes in team and individual athletic fields

The goal of this research is studying the effect of sport fields on self-identity and social identity. Statistical samples of this research are accessible samples including 44 national athletes in volleyball (30 persons) and weightlifting (14 persons). Brewer Athletic Identity (1993) questionnaire, was used to gather data. Average and standard deviation in descriptive statistics section, and K-S Test, independent t, and Mann-Whitney Test in inferential statistics section were used to determine normality of data and significance of data in level p<0.05.The results of this research showed that sport field affects self-identity and social identity. Self-identity and social identity are significant in weightlifting and volleyball fields and sport type affects self-identity and social identity. Also, it was found that individual and team sports significantly affect selfidentity and social identity on level p<0.005. Keywords: Self-identity, social identity, team sports, individual sports

Athletic identity and its relationship to sport participation levels

Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2006

This study looked at the relationship between athletic identity and three levels of sport participation (elite, recreational, non-participation). Athletic identity was measured using the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) with participants being compared on the total AIMS score and scores on its three factors (social identity, exclusivity, negative affectivity). Results indicated that the male non-participation group scored lower on all three factors and the total AIMS when compared to the two athlete groups. The male elite and recreational groups did not differ on exclusivity and negative affectivity but did differ on the total AIMS and social identity, with elite scoring higher than recreational. For female participants, the non-participation group again scored lower on all three factors and the total AIMS when compared to the two athlete groups. The female elite and recreational groups did not differ on negative affectivity but did differ on the total AIMS, social identity, and exclusivity, with elite scoring higher than recreational. Findings suggest that to assume sport is only important to elite athletes ignores the role that sport may play for less talented sport participants. Whilst not seeing themselves as athletes per se, it is suggested that participation in sport may still impact upon the self-perceptions of recreational sport participants. Therefore, threats to participation may result in similar negative consequences for both elite athletes and recreational sport participants.

Student-Athletes’ Motivation and Identity: Variation Among Brazilian and Portuguese University Student-Athletes

Psychological Reports, 2019

This study examined the variation of student-athletes’ identity and motivation across Portuguese and Brazilian universities, accounting for variation in gender, student-athletes’ training hours per week, sports level, student-athletes status within each university, and university type. We initially established the validity of the Baller Identity Measurement Scale questionnaire and the Student-Athletes’ Motivation toward Sports and Academics Questionnaire-based observations among 441 Brazilian and Portuguese student-athletes. Then, the validated version of the questionnaires was applied to a total sample of 765 student-athletes from Brazil (n= 568) and Portugal (n = 197). We further considered individual (hours of training and student-athlete status) and contextual characteristics (university type and country). Multilevel regression and poststratification were used to estimate each student-athlete identity and motivation as a function of his or her individual and contextual character...

Antecedents and Consequences of Student-Athletes’ Identity Profiles in Upper Secondary School

Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, 2020

The present study examined the identity profiles that upper-secondary-school Finnish student-athletes show, and the extent to which these profiles were associated with their athletic and academic achievements and withdrawal from sports and school. A total of 391 adolescent athletes (51% females) completed assessments of student and athletic identity four times during their time in upper secondary school. Using growth mixture modeling, three groups were identified: (a) dual identity (77%), (b) changing identity (5%), and (c) athletic identity (18%). The higher the academic achievement was at Time 1, the more likely the athletes were to show dual identity than athletic identity profile. Similarly, athletes with dual identity showed higher subsequent academic achievement at Time 4 than those with an athletic identity profile. Finally, athletes with dual identity were more likely and athletes with athletic identity less likely to withdraw from sport activities during upper secondary school than expected by chance.

Athlete's Role Identity: An Integrative Review of Measurement Instruments

Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte, 2020

Introduction: The identity of the role of athlete (athletic identity - AI) can be understood as an aspect of self-concept, more specifically as a cognitive structure that guides and organizes the processing of self-related information. Objective: To verify studies that have developed or validated instruments to measure AI, and to identify the psychometric properties presented by these instruments. Methods: We searched for articles in the Scopus, APA (PsycNET), Lilacs, Scielo, ScienceDirect, SPORTdiscus and Pubmed databases with the descriptors (“athletic identity” OR “social identity” OR “self-identity” OR “athlete identity”) AND (“athlete” OR “sport” OR “type of sport”) AND (“validation” OR “validity” OR “adaptation”). Results: Of the 21 studies selected for analysis, the majority was found to have employed the theoretical assumption of athletic identity of Brewer, Van Raalte & Linder (1993), while with regard to the validity process, it was ascertained that all the studies include...

The Athletic Identity Measurement Scale: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis from 1993 to 2021

European Journal of Investigation in Health, Psychology and Education

Sport psychology embraced the study of athletic identity in the 1990s. The Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) is at the forefront of athletic identity measurement. This quantitative review examined two hypotheses: individual who are most engaged in sports identify most as athletes and thus score higher on the AIMS, and athletic identity relates to positive (e.g., intrinsic motivation) and negative (negative emotions) factors. In addition to our two hypotheses, we explored whether the AIMS subscales influenced our two hypotheses. After completing a systematic search of SPORTDiscus, APA PsycINFO, ERIC, and Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection APA within the EBSCOhost platform along with some hand searching, 101 articles published between 1993 and our end date of August 2021 met the inclusion criteria. The included studies investigated 20,498 athletes competing in a variety of sports from the following continents: Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America. We based al...

The results yield important information for coaches and trainers sportspersons.

DIFFERENT VARIABLES INVESTIGATION OF ATHLETIC IDENTITY IN TEAM SPORT

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship of athletic identity between different variables such as license period, sport branch and the conditions of national players. The research group has been established of 485 athletes who struggle on the top platform in various sport branches in Turkey leagues. As data collection tool, the athlete identity scale was used in research. At the evaluation of data: frequency, mean, standard deviation, scales, Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient,t-test for independent groups, one-way analysis of variance for independent groups (ANOVA), simple correlation analysis and simple linear regression analysis methods were used. According to the findings, athlete identity varies significantly for the license period and nationalities of variables but does not cause any difference for sport branch. The findings obtained from the study may suggest that it is possible to create a productive sport life with a strong athlete identity. The search of identity is one of the basic features of the development.
