Spacecraft design education and the Kiwi Satellite project (original) (raw)
1995, Space Programs and Technologies Conference
Stanford University's Satellite Systems Development Laboratory (SSDL) is chartered to provide world class education and research in all aspects of spacecraft design, technology, and operation. Graduate and undergraduate students interested in the SSDL's work normally enter the program by enrolling in Stanford's introductory spacecraft design course. The focal point of this class is a design project known as the Kiwi Satellite. This project requires student teams to build non-space capable electromechanical objects that must remotely interact with users and be maintained by operators. The project is orchestrated so that these 'satellites' meet simulated spacecraft design requirements and are designed using industry standard methodologies and project management techniques. Results to date have shown that the hands-on design experience offered by the Kiwi Satellite project provides students with a unique educational opportunity. In short, this project enables students to simulate the experiences of a complete spacecraft design lifecycle, perform detailed design across all satellite subsystems, and employ the skills of the aerospace industry.
