Application of lean manufacturing in construction management
International journal for innovation education and research, 2019
The construction industry in recent decades has been facing internal and external pressures, such as financial crisis, industry competitiveness and increased importance of quality required by the client. Because it is a sector, which has a low level of productivity, and high levels of waste, both with materials such as with labor, it is necessary to search for new management practices and production control. The development of a productive environment which aims to reduce waste, costs and deadlines, meeting customer needs and increasing efficiency and productivity in construction sites, made the application of the concepts of Lean Manufacturing in Civil works broke old paradigms in this area. In this way, this work has as objective the study of the implementation of Lean Manufacturing and its effect on the construction management, through the development of case studies on construction sites, where these concepts were applied and the results obtained are exposed in this work.
In manufacturing industries lean manufacturing is a broadly accepted philosophy. There are more requirements of research and studies. To investigate the needs, techniques, benefits of lean manufacturing and approaches for implementation Lean manufacturing is a leading manufacturing paradigm has applied in many economy sectors, where we have to reduce manufacturing cost, improving product quality, reducing cost of poor quality, and quick to respond and " first to market to customer needs are critical to competitiveness and success. Lean methods and principle focus on the continuous improvement and engages employees reducing the intensity of materials, time, and capital necessary for meeting a customer's needs. Successful implementation of lean manufacturing is very important to increase quality and waste reduction. By implementation of lean manufacturing there are various benefits such as waste elimination, reduction in reworking, financial benefits, lead time reduction and lower inventory levels.
A Comparative Study between Lean Construction and the Traditional Production System
The growing context of globalization permanently increases pressure on the construction companies to improve their performances in order to resist to the constraints of competitiveness in the international market. It has become ineluctable to look for introducing a new alternative capable of bringing creative improvement to the traditional production system. This paper will relate mainly to the most relevant management techniques in the construction industry, and more specifically, the lean construction concept. Initially, we willdetermine the main characteristics of the construction industry compared to the manufacturing industry according to three levels: on-site production, one of a kind projects, and complexity. Subsequently, we will focus our attention on the main sources of waste in the construction industry. Finally, a rigorous comparative study will be carried out to show the contribution of the lean construction tools in the promotion of traditional construction especially at the level of the following factors: Creating value and eliminating waste; Planning and mutual coordination; Site organization. Lean construction as Last Planner System (LPS), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Just-in-Time philosophy, Visual management (VM) and 5S have shown a great ability to improve the traditional production system through waste reduction, encouraging people involvement, ensuring a pull flow production, and promotion of a continuous improvement philosophy.
Literature Review on Implementation of Lean Manufacturing Techniques
International Journal of Advance Research, Ideas and Innovations in Technology, 2015
In competitive environment lean manufacturing is necessary in every industry. Lean production is a standard manufacturing mode of the 21st century. Lean manufacturing have various synonyms like lean management, lean production, It is very use full techniques for reduce the flow of non value added time. Lean manufacturing is a philosophy to reduce the time between customer order and products are ready for the delivery by eliminating waste. Waste (muda) is a serious problem in to the industry it is creates a non value added services and poor quality of the product. Waste are seven type occurs in industry 1) transport,2) inventory,3)motion,4) waiting,5) over production,6) over processing,7) defect. It is eliminate with the help of lean manufacturing. It is an integrated system that gives production of goods/services with minimum buffering costs. This paper gives the literature survey on various type of industry to apply the lean manufacturing, like apply in to automobile industry, and ...
Improvement of Production Processes with the Use of Lean Manufacturing Tools
Multidisciplinary Aspects of Production Engineering, 2018
Growing competition, clients’ requirements as well as advances in technology make modern industrial enterprises search for a way of achieving and maintaining strong position on the market. One of the principal and at the same time necessary conditions to achieve this aim is continuous development of all of the processes in order to fulfil various clients’ expectations. Enterprises make use of different concepts and management methods which in significant way upgrade ongoing processes by raising their efficiency. One of such is the concept of ‘lean’ production - Lean Manufacturing. Management according to Lean Management rules allows to produce more with the use of less resources - at the same time approaching the aim which is to deliver clients the exact product they want. The process of resources use limitation is not easy to perform however, the concept of Lean Manufacturing by the application of chosen tools allows successfully and effectively to introduce ‘lean’ model of managem...
Enhancement of Production by Lean Manufacturing Method
INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCES
The thesis proposes a method for introducing lean manufacturing using string diagram in an operating CNG high pressure storage tank manufacturing job shop at Jayfe Cylinder Ltd. Haryana. By applying lean manufacturing using process layout diagram to produce part families with similar manufacturing processes and stable demand, plants expect to reduce costs and lead-times and improve quality and delivery performance. The thesis outlines a method for assessing, designing, and implementing lean manufacturing using process layout diagram, and illustrates this process with an example. A manufacturing cell that produces high pressure steel tank container for commercial & automobile customers is implemented at cylinder tank Machining Centers. The conclusion of the thesis highlights the key lessons learned from this process.
Review of Lean Manufacturing Effectiveness on Industries
mantech publications, 2023
In a competitive industrial scenario, lean manufacturing is much effective in every industry. Lean manufacturing has various forms as lean management, lean production. It is a very effective technique for overcoming non-value-added activity as well as time. Lean manufacturing is also helping full to reduce waste. Waste in the form of a nonvalue-added exercise and poor quality of the product. Waste are seven types in industry transport, inventory, motion, waiting, overproduction, over-processing, defect. It is eliminated with the help of lean manufacturing. It is a system that gives the production of goods/services with minimum total costs. This paper provides the literature survey on the industries to apply lean manufacturing to the automobile industry, pharmaceutical companies, oil industry, and other manufacturing industries. Also, refer to other papers that give information about lean manufacturing-and introducing lean.
The Perception & Methodology of Lean Manufacturing: A Review paper 1
2015
— In the present global and competitive environment all organizations needs to perform efficiently with higher productivity. For performing efficiently with higher productivity there are so many tools and techniques. Lean is one of them it means using only what is necessary. Lean manufacturing techniques aim to significantly identify waste and eliminate it from the manufacturing processes. The paper is based on a discussion of literature review that shows how the completion of Lean could find importance to the organization processes and contribute for live in competitive environment by fast full benefits i.e. lead time, set-up time, reduction in inventory etc.

A Content Analysis on Lean Manufacturing -Concept and Benefits for Manufacturing Industry
IJRASET, 2021
Nowadays, every organization must be required to determine its strength and weaknesses to enlarge productivity and output of their operations. The concept of lean production system has been acknowledged as a means to increase competitiveness for manufacturing concerns all over the world. The present paper has been planned to analyze the concept of Lean Production and its benefits for manufacturing industries. On the basis of the content analysis, the study found that lean manufacturing is gaining popularity day by day among manufacturing industries due to its potential of increasing operational performance. This is done with the help of its set of tools and principles which are used in the systematic elimination of seven wastes, namely, overproduction; waiting; scrap; conveyance; processing; inventory; and motion. Elimination of wastes enable manufacturer to produce the product with superior quality, lower cost and on time with lesser efforts.
