A Multi Agent-based Service Framework for Supply Chain Management

Supply chain coordination has emerged as one of the major areas for companies to gain a competitive edge in a globalized world. Business organizations are increasingly located at the intersection of multiple supply chain networks. Managing such networks is hugely dependent on automation through combining advanced technologies such as software agent technologies, service oriented technologies, Internet of Things etc. This paper presents a multi agent and web service framework for Collaborative Material Procurement System (CMPS) in a supply chain. The information used in CMPS is used in two forms: business service rules and service description cases. It utilizes this hybrid information in order to form appropriate service, by using rule-based reasoning (RBR) and case-based reasoning (CBR). This paper outlines the CMPS architecture, designed to automatically retrieve softwarebased services for the agents that coordinate the supply chain form a service repository using a semantics-driven service similarity assessment algorithm.

In today's highly dynamic and competitive business environment the realization of the Supply Chain Management (SCM) has been a challenging task. Especially the dynamic nature of various processes involved in a SCM scenario demands for suitable policy to monitor and take suitable actions in order to handle changing customer requirements. In this article, we address this issue by proposing a service oriented model augmented with software agents. While the notion of service is used to decompose a complex inter-organizational supply chain task into well-defined service components, the notion of software agents has been used to monitor the workflow and the associated tasks. Business processes have been changing since the Internet was created, and they are now oriented towards a more distributed and collaborative business model, in an e-commerce environment that adapts itself to the competitive and changing market conditions. This paper presents a multi-agent system architecture for supply chain management, which explores different strategies and offers solutions in a distributed e-commerce environment. The system is designed to support different types of interfaces, which allow interoperating with other business models already developed. In order to show how the entire multi-agent system is being developed, the implementation of a collaborative agent is presented and explained. The testing and evaluation of the entire multi-agent system is being carried out in an agentbased experimentation platform.

The use of modern information technology (IT) decision support systems is fast becoming an indispensable tool for designing and managing complex supply chain systems today. The supply chain is a worldwide network of suppliers, factories, warehouses, distribution centers, and retailers through which raw materials are acquired, transformed, and delivered to customers. In recent years, a new software architecture for managing the supply chain at the tactical and operational levels has emerged. It views the supply chain as composed of a set of intelligent software agents, each responsible for one or more activities in the supply chain and each interacting with other agents in the planning and execution of their responsibilities. This paper investigates issues and presents solutions for the construction of such an agent-oriented software architecture. The approach relies on the use of an agent building shell, providing generic, reusable, and guaranteed components and services for communicative-act-based communication, conversational coordination, role-based organization modeling, and others. Using these components, we show two nontrivial agent-based supply-chain architectures able to support complex cooperative work and the management of perturbation caused by stochastic events in the supply chain.

In the face of highly competitive markets and constant pressure to reduce lead times, enterprises today consider supply chain management to be the key area where improvements can significantly impact the bottom line. More enterprises now consider the entire supply chain structure while taking business decisions. They try to identify and manage all critical relationships both upstream and downstream in their supply chains. Some impediments to this are that the necessary information usually resides across a multitude of resources, is ever changing, and is present in multiple formats. Most supply chain decision support systems (DSSs) are specific to an enterprise and its supply chain, and cannot be easily modified to assist other similar enterprises and industries. In this two-part paper, we propose a unified framework for modeling, monitoring and management of supply chains. The first part of the paper describes the framework while the second part illustrates its application to a refinery supply chain. The framework integrates the various elements of the supply chain such as enterprises, their production processes, the associated business data and knowledge and represents them in a unified, intelligent and object-oriented fashion. Supply chain elements are classified as entities, flows and relationships. Software agents are used to emulate the entities i.e. various enterprises and their internal departments. Agent-based transactional framework for the supply chain

We propose a framework for supporting manufacturing activities as part of the supply chain management. The manufacturing process is seen as a network of processing nodes where products are either transformed or assembled. Each node is endowed with some autonomy that enables it to enhance the agility and the 'fluidity' of the manufacturing process. Nodes are able to search for the best deals on the market and to respond dynamically to changes in internal or external conditions. This requires transactional knowledge as well as some knowledge of the supply chain (embodied into the degree of availability at a particular node). This framework is modelled by a combination of agent technology and extended transaction models in order to facilitate dynamic activities in supply chain.
