ABSTRACT: WHOSE BLOOD IS ON THE RIDER'S ROBE? REVELATION 19:13 IN INTERTEXTUAL PERSPECTIVE (original) (raw)

“Battle is over, raise we the cry of victory”. Study of Revelation 19:11-21

2020

Using some of the tools of narrative criticism, this article studies the final battle and victory which is achieved by God’s envoy. By unpacking the network of relationship in the text the envoy is identified with the Christ of God, who has been present in the book from the beginning. The article shows how the Rider on the white horse summarises what the book of Revelation has said

The Book of Revelation: A Call to Worship, Witness, and Wait in the Midst of Violence

M.J. Smith, “The Book of Revelation: A Call to Worship, Witness, and Wait in the Midst of Violence.” In Into All the World: Emergent Christianity in its Jewish and Greco-Roman Context, edited by M. Harding and A. Nobbs, Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2017, 334-71., 2017

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the Christian response to violence envisioned by the book of Revelation. My thesis is that the book of Revelation functions as a prophetic call to Christian believers to respond to violence not with further violence, but by worshiping the one true God, by bearing witness to his work in Jesus Christ, and by waiting patiently for his final victory in the world. Part 1 provides a brief orientation to the book of Revelation. Part 2 sketches the origins and nature of the persecution of Christians within the Roman world, with specific reference to the Roman imperial cults and the province of Asia. Part 3 explores the book’s prophetic call to worship, witness, and wait.

Intimations of Revelation 19–21 in the Early North African Christian Communities

Open Theology

The purpose of this article is to provide a survey of the interpretation of Revelation 19–21 in the early North African Christian communities (II–III century). These chapters refer to one of the most controversial passages of John’s Apocalypse (the eschatological war, the millennial kingdom, and the descent of the New Jerusalem). After a brief methodological reflection, the article will investigate how these chapters were interpreted not only in the early Latin authors but also how this material was employed in martyrdom accounts as well. The study, in fact, will begin with the first Latin document of Christian literature, the Acta Martyrum Scilitanorum, followed by the corpus of Tertullian, the Passio Sanctarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis, and the writings of Cyprian.

Why is John’s Apocalypse so Bloody? John’s Use and Subversion of Combat Myths in Revelation 19:11–20:10

Tyndale Bulletin, 2023

The question of violence in John's Apocalypse is a perennial issue producing numerous treatments with a variety of solutions. Nevertheless, very few of the many treatments seriously engage the combat myths of the ancient Near East and how they may relate to the issue of violence in the Apocalypse. This lack of engagement is surprising given that the Apocalypse seems to draw from the plot elements, characters, and overarching concerns common to combat myths. This essay aims to rectify this by situating the Apocalypse within the combat myth tradition. When one does this, I argue that John's use of the mythic pattern furnished by combat myths renders the violence of the Apocalypse intelligible while at the same time undermining the violent imagery with strategic departures and alterations.

Blood and Liminality. A Common Thread in the Book of Exodus, Analecta Biblica Studia 18, G&B Press, Roma 2023.

«Blood and Liminality» is a monograph dedicated to the study of texts drawn from the book of Exodus in which the blood, shed in a ritual action, constitutes a significant element of the narrative. Some of these passages (the circumcision in Exod 4:24-26; the blood of the lamb in 12:6-7, 21-23; the cove- nant in 24:3-8) contain rituals that are unique in the biblical panorama; moreover, blood manipulations are essentials in the consecration of Aaron and his sons (29,1-35), and in the annual feast of the Yom Kippur (30,10). The novelty of the work consists in the recognition of a common thread that runs through the book of Exodus and determines it in a significant way: when Moses and the people approach the threshold of death, the ritual blood enables them to cross that dangerous border. In all the texts analysed, human blood (for Moses in 4:24-26) and animal blood are shed and “circulate,” indicating and actualizing a relationship with God. This new bond is par- ticularly highlighted in the narrative dedicated to the sealing of the covenant (Exod 24), where the reader can find a connec- tion between blood ritual and oath.

"Exploring Intertextuality: Revelation 18 and Overlooked Allusions to the Old Testament." A Proposal Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree, Master of Arts, Theologische Hochschule Friedensau, December 7, 2023, 2023

The literature review of the intertextual allusions in Revelation 18 to the Old Testament reveals certain deficiencies. While the allusion of Revelation 18:1 to Isaiah 6:3 was completely overlooked, the allusions of Revelation 18:4, 20 to Genesis 19:15 and Ps 95[96]:11 were merely mentioned. In addition, a detailed methodological analysis of these allusions is lacking. Goal: The purpose of this study is twofold. First, the investigation aims to establish the nature of the Old Testament allusions in Revelation 18:1, 4, 20. Second, the thesis aims to conduct an in-depth intertextual analysis. This analysis will focus on unravelling and understanding the intricate relationships between source texts (Isaiah 6:3, Genesis 19:15, and Psalm 95[96]:11) and target texts in Rev 18:1, 4, 20. In order to accomplish this goal, the investigation focuses at the linguistic, thematic, and structural intertextual relationships between the source and target texts.
