Background: Dental health problems in the community are in the high category, where the prevalence of caries in the population in Indonesia is 72.6% with a DMF-T index of 4.5, while the population with dental and oral problems who receive care and treatment is 31.1% and. So it can be interpreted that dental cases in Indonesia are high but the utilization of dental health services is still low. Purpose: To analyze the relationship of dental health status to the utilization of dental and oral health services at public health centers. Methods: This type of research is a quantitative research with a cross sectional approach. The study was conducted on patients at the Dental Polyclinic of Mangkurawang Health Center, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, East Kalimantan Province. The research sample was taken by purposive sampling technique, as many as 200 people. The independent variable is dental health status and the dependent variable is the utilization of dental health services. Data analysis was carried out using the Kendal's tau test, which aims to determine the relationship between dental health status and the utilization of dental and oral health services. Results: From the results of the study, it is known that most of the respondents have a high category of dental health status with the status of utilization of dental and oral health services in the bad category, namely 49 respondents (24.5%). Analysis with Kendal's tau test obtained p-value 0.000 (p˂0.05) meaning that there is a significant relationship between dental health status and utilization status of oral and dental health services at the public health centers. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between dental health status and the utilization status of dental and oral health services at the public health centers.

This paper highlights the factors that interact and determine the oral and general health of older adults. It also describes in brief various components of staying healthy in ageing population. Nutrition, systemic conditions and pharmaceuticals play vital role in determining good oral health care of elderly population. This article also explains various age related changes in the oral cavity and the role of care givers to detect and report these changes to oral health care providers. Thus this article not only provides an insight on the oral health and its significance in geriatric population but also mentions the ways to develop a senior-friendly dental officer.

Oral and dental health is strongly related with population and society in human history based on archaeological evidences. There is a growing concern toward oral and dental health which relates not only to individual but also population, as oral and dental health nowadays is sought as essential factor in determining life quality. The dynamic of oral and dental health is related to biological and cultural factors. Yet, these factors are predisposed by socioeconomic and demographic situation, diet pattern, technology advancement, as well as globalisation. Moreover, amongst those factors, human behaviour is the main attribute toward oral and dental health status. The era of ageing population is to be the next challenge for better oral and dental health status in the future.

The dentist performance within public health represents an important advance in the complete and interdisciplinary plan for the prevention, promotion and health recovery, whether in public or private networks. Objective: This study aims to reflect and discuss the real dentist importance for the public health within this professional activity field, understanding that dental care goes beyond what is realized in the mouth. In addition, to analyze these professionals’ roles and their actions impacts on the health quality of those who receive their care.
