A Study on Emotional Intelligence among School Going Adolescents in Kolkata

The aim of the present study is to determine the level of emotional intelligence of school going adolescents; and to compare the emotional intelligence and its four dimensions/sub-factors i.e., understanding emotions, understanding motivation, empathy and handling relation of school going adolescents with respect to their gender, grade and board pattern of education. The present study was carried out on 288 higher secondary school students selected as sample from six schools of three different boards of education (viz. two WBCHSE, two CBSE and two ICSE) of Kolkata district in West Bengal using convenient sampling technique. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AMONG ADOLESCENT BOYS AND GIRLS IN SRINAGAR

The present study was conducted to assess the emotional intelligence of adolescent boys and girls in Srinagar. The sample for the study consisted of 80 adolescents (40boys and 40girls) who were selected randomly from different schools of Srinagar. The investigator used Mangal Emotional Intelligence Inventory which is highly valid and reliable tool. The data collected was subjected to percentage statistics. The results revealed that adolescent boys were having better emotional intelligence than adolescent girls.

UNDERSTANDING ADOLESCENTS' EMOTIONALITY: AN ANALYSIS OF FACTORS AFFECTING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

The study is an attempt to explore the factors analyzing adolescents' emotional development. At first some of the views of psychologists and researchers on the stage of adolescence was examined. The researcher goes by the definition, 'adolescence is a socially defined group' given by Ritzer, Kammeyer and Yetman (1979) (6). The sample comprised of 400 adolescents in the age group of 13-18 yearsin Kamrup Metropolitan District of Assam. At first an Emotional Intelligence test developed by Dr Ekta Sharma was administered to the adolescents. The influence of demographic factors such as locality, parents' education and occupation were analysed. The data was statistically treated and the scores of the adolescents were also examined. Though a vast expanse of literature tries to dwell on the relationship of the demographic variables with Emotional Intelligence, the researcher would like to gravitate attention to the fact that at the stage of adolescence, an individual develops a sense of emotional autonomy; there exists a myriad of factors that interplay to shape the emotionality of adolescents. The world today needs more attention to be directed towards nurturing adolescents emotionality through comprehensive, well designed Emotional Intelligence Education curriculum, suited to the individual needs of the adolescents in particular and the society in general.

A Study of Emotional Intelligence of Adolescent Students of Senior Secondary Schools in Relation to Their Sex and Locale

This paper aims to study the emotional intelligence of adolescent students in relation to their Gender and Locality. 200 senior secondary students were the sample of study and they selected through stratified random sampling method from senior secondary schools of Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. For the collection of necessary information investigator used Emotional Intelligence Inventory-MEII by Dr. S.K. Mangal and Shubra Mangal. To find the significance of difference between the various groups ‘t’-test was applied. The results of this research inferred that secondary school students those studied in schools of urban locality in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh have better EI than the students of schools of rural areas but gender wise students do not differ significantly on emotional intelligence.

New concepts such as emotional intelligence have become more widely understood; more educators are realizing that cognitive ability is not the sole or critical determinant of young people’s aptitude to flourish in today’s society. Proficiency in emotional management, conflict resolution, communication and interpersonal skills is essential for children to develop inner self-security and become able to effectively deal with the pressure and obstacles that will inevitably arise in their lives. Objectives of this study were to study: (i) To study the emotional intelligence of school students. (ii) To compare emotional intelligence of male and female school students; (iii) To compare emotional intelligence of rural and urban school students. Sample of 800 secondary school students from four districts of Haryana were selected through random sampling method. Emotional Intelligence Inventory by Dr. S. K. Mangal and Mrs. Shubhra Mangal. The data was analysed by Product Moment Correlation and Z-test. The main findings are: (1) a significant difference was found in emotional intelligence of male and female school students. It is in favour of female students; (2) a significant difference was found in emotional intelligence of rural and urban school students. It is in favour of urban students.

The aim of the research is to determine how much peer relationships are explained by emotional intelligence in adolescents. For this purpose, 539 (283 female+256 male) adolescent individuals participated in the study. “Personal Information Form”, “Trait Emotional Intelligence—Adolescent Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-ASF)” and “Friendship Qualities Scale” were used as data collection tools in the research. The data collected online were coded and transferred to the SPSS program, and descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and Regression techniques were used in statistical analysis. Adolescence (10–19 years) is a unique and formative time. Whilst most adolescents have good mental health, multiple physical, emotional and social changes, including exposure to poverty, abuse, or violence, can make adolescents vulnerable to mental health problems. There is considerable evidence pointing to its positive role in helping students deal with stress, develop relationships, and handle the transitions facing them. Present study aims to find out the emotional intelligence among secondary school boys and girls, using random sampling technique 240 (120 boys and 120 girls) adolescents were taken. An exploratory design was used for the study. Emotional intelligence test developed by Dr.Ekta Sharma (2011) is used to measure emotional intelligence of students.
