Activecube: A bi-directional user interface using cubes

ActiveCube is a bi-directional user interface that supports a person's creative work through constructing and interacting with 3-D virtual objects by using actual physical cubes. With this flexible interface, the user can easily construct various 3-D structures in a virtual environment by simply combining the cubes. All of the faces of the cubes are the same and can be connected to any face of any other cube. A computer recognizes the constructed 3-D structure in real-time, so consistency is always maintained between the real environment and its corresponding representation in a virtual environment. Each cube is equipped with a processor for autonomous simulation and communication functions between cubes. A cube also utilizes a sensor for detecting the operational intention of the user and/or a display/actuator used as an output channel. Users can interact with ActiveCube in various ways by using the sensors, and the response to the interaction is also shown by displays/actuators installed on the cube. Each ActiveCube is equipped with both input and output devices, which makes the interface intuitive and helps to clarify the causal relationship between the input of the user's operational intention and the output of simulated results.
ActiveCube and its 3D Applications

ActiveCube is a novel device that allows a user to construct and interact with a 3D environment by using cubes with a bi-directional user interface. A computer recognizes the 3D structure of connected cubes in real time by utilizing the real-time communication network among cubes. Also, ActiveCube is equipped with both input and output devices, at where the user expects to be, and this makes the interface intuitive and helps to clarify the causal relationship between the input of the user's operational intention and the output of simulated results. Consistency is always maintained between the real object and its corresponding representation in the computer in terms of object shape and functionalities. A variety of applications can be developed by utilizing ActiveCube. In this paper,we introduce a retrieval system of 3D shape models, a story-telling system and assessment of human's cognitive spatial ability as examples.

ActiveCube is a novel user interface that allows intuitive interaction with computers. ActiveCube allows users to construct and interact with three-dimensional (3D) environments using physical cubes equipped with input/output devices. Spatial, temporal, and functional consistency is always maintained between the physical object and its corresponding representation in the computer. In this article we detail the design and implementation of our system. We describe the method we used to realize flexible 3D modeling by controlling the recognition signals of each face in each cube. We also explain how we integrated additional multimodal interaction options via a number of sophisticated I/O devices and the inclusion of a second microprocessor in our cubes. We argue that ActiveCube, with its current real-time multimodal and spatial capabilities, is ready to enable a large range of interactive entertainment applications that were impossible to realize before.
m-ActiveCube; Multimedia Extension of Spatial Tangible User Interface

A new Tangible User Interface (TUI) device, m-ActiveCube, is proposed as a multimedia extension of ActiveCube, which is a TUI device that enables more efficient human computer interaction than conventional devices. First, fundamental specifications of m-ActiveCube are determined to remove the processing performance and functionality limitation of the original ActiveCube. By utilizing improved performance, m-ActiveCube offers such novel functionalities as speech recognition with which more impressive applications can be constructed at any level of human living system.
3D Interaction With and From Handheld Computers

3D user interfaces (3DUI) aim to enhance the user performance of 3D interactive tasks. In this paper we focus on the bridges between 3DUIs and handheld computers, following two directions. First, 3DUIs must be developed for efficient interaction with embedded 3D applications. Second, handheld computers can be useful for distant interaction with large displays in collaborative 3D applications. We propose a new 3 DOF interface for interaction with 3D environments for these two directions. This interface is based on the analysis of the video stream coming from the embedded cameras for bimanual interaction with and from handheld computers.
3D Computer interaction using physical objects: exploration of tangible user interfaces

Abstract Why is computer interaction using a 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) tool such a hard task while an untrained child can easily build 3D buildings out of a LegoTM set? We believe that the reason lies in the current Human Computer interface (HCI). TUIs (Tangible User Interfaces) offer natural means of interaction with computers and have already been shown to simplify existing computerized applications and offer solutions for tasks that were considered to be “out of the scope” of human-computer interaction.
Interactive entertainment systems using tangible cubes

In this paper we present two tangible interactive entertainment interfaces using physical cubes. In the first paradigm, Magic Story Cube, we novelly used a foldable cube for tangible and interactive story telling. In the second paradigm, Jumanji Singapore, physical dices are used to directly manipulate and control the process Jumanji board game. In both of our systems, we embedded both the concept of augmented reality (AR) and the concept of tangible interaction. More importantly, multiple modalities including speech, 3D audio, 3D graphics, and touch are used to provide the user with multi-sensory experiences. Our research explores the uses of tangible objects, more specifically, the uses of physical cubes in interactive entertainment systems.

This chapter introduced the three-dimensional user interface (3D UI). With the emergence of Virtual Environment (VE), augmented reality, pervasive computing, and other "desktop disengage" technology, 3D UI is constantly exploiting an important area. However, for most users, the 3D UI based on desktop is still a part that can not be ignored. This chapter interprets what is 3D UI, the importance of 3D UI and analyses some 3D UI application. At the same time, according to human-computer interaction strategy and research methods and conclusions of WIMP, it focus on desktop 3D UI, sums up some design principles of 3D UI. From the principle of spatial perception of people, spatial cognition, this chapter explained the depth clues and other theoretical knowledge, and introduced Hierarchical Semantic model of "UE", Scenario-based User Behavior Model and Screen Layout for Information Minimization which can instruct the design and development of 3D UI. This chapter focuses on basic elements of 3D Interaction Behavior: Manipulation, Navigation, and System Control. It described in 3D UI, how to use manipulate the virtual objects effectively by using Manipulation which is the most fundamental task, how to reduce the user's cognitive load and enhance the user's space knowledge in use of exploration technology by using navigation, and how to issue an order and how to request the system for the implementation of a specific function and how to change the system status or change the interactive pattern by using System Control. Finally through the case analysis, it highlighted the experience and interactive of 3D UI. And then it analyzed elements affecting 3D UI interactive mode from the Psychology, interactive design and information show. 3D UI has come to the transition time from the technology-driven to the design-driven. This section gives the readers a basic understanding of 3D UI. It focuses on the basic concepts, advantages and limitations between different latitude UI, its applications and the studying contents. 1.1 Concept of 3D UI 1.1.1 Definition of 3D UI With the development of computer hardware and software technology and the increased demand of application, digital terminal equipment diversification, such as cell phones, PDA (Pocket PC) terminals spread, and so on, that the time of Pervasive Computing has arrived.
