Abstract
Critical Care Medicine • Volume 46 • Number 1 (Supplement) www.ccmjournal.org Learning Objectives: Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (vvECMO) sometimes requires deep sedation levels (Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale [RASS] -5) to safely apply this technique in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Common sedatives may be difficult to titrate due to drug-circuit interactions whereas obesity may lead to increased requirements. We sought to characterize opioid and sedative requirements in obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m) vs. non-obese (BMI < 30 kg/m) adult ARDS patients treated with vvECMO. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study we included consecutive adults with ARDS managed with vvECMO ≥ 72 hours over a 7-year period requiring continuous sedatives without alcohol withdrawal or drug dependence. Opioid requirements (in milligrams of fentanyl equivalents) and benzodiazepine requirements (in milligrams of midazolam equivalents) were collected from ECMO ini...
