The Effect of Discretionary Accruals on Financial Statement Fraud: The Case of the French Companies

Our findings such that discretionary accruals have a positive effect in corporate fraud, when distinguish between positive discretionary accruals (aggressive accounting policy) and negative discretionary accruals (conservative accounting policy); we provide evidence that aggressive accounting manipulation increases the likelihood of financial statement fraud. By contrast, conservative accounting policy is negatively associate with corporate fraud. Additionally, the outside director and ownership concentration are the most significant variables of governance to explain the corporate fraud.
The Market’s Valuation of Fraudulently Reported Earnings
This study examines the market valuation of accounting earnings during the period before it is publicly revealed that the earnings are fraudulent. Using both cross-sectional and time-series valuation models, we first find that the market accords less weight to earnings when the accounting numbers are fraudulent. We also show that the market better anticipates the presence of fraud when there is information in the public domain indicating a high ex-ante risk of fraud. Our findings suggest that investors are able to accurately assess the probability of fraud and that such assessments affect the market’s valuation of earnings even before it is publicly announced that fraud has occurred.
Irregularities and the Market Value of Companies
RAM. Revista de Administração Mackenzie
Purpose: To investigate the impact of the irregularities under analysis and/or judged in the sanctioning administrative proceedings of the Securities and Exchange Commission on the market value of Brazilian companies. Thus, we used the signaling theory to analyze how stakeholders interpret situations and where the available information is asymmetric and incomplete among market agents. Originality/value: The study was based on the assumption that the conviction within the scope of the regulatory body can negatively affect the company’s reputation and value. Empirical evidence indicates that irregularities affect market sentiment. On the other hand, the company can present a better market value if an effective and efficient corporate governance is established, aligning the interests of stakeholders and management. Design/methodology/approach: Information was collected with quarterly data covering the period from 2010 to 2018. Two hypotheses were tested by means of regression analysis ...

The paper examines the relation between the probability of manipulation, accruals, and future returns. We show that firms that have a high likelihood of earnings manipulation (as measured by the Beneish (1999)'s M-Score) experience lower future earnings, but that investors expect these firms to have higher future earnings. Indeed, we find that investors overestimate next-period return on assets by 490 to 690 basis points (this is significant as the median ROA in the sample 4.6%). We also show that the probability of manipulation is a correlated omitted variable for the earnings forecasting models used in prior research on accrual mispricing and that including the probability of manipulation greatly attenuates the mispricing of accrual persistence. Finally, we show that the probability of earnings manipulation predicts economically significant abnormal returns of approximately 15% per year after controlling for accruals and various controls for risk factors, including a factor compensating for earnings quality differences (Easley and O'Hara (2004), Francis et al. (2005)). We interpret our results that the predictive ability of accruals for returns is greatly diminished in the presence of the M-Score as indicating that accrual mispricing arises because investors are misled by managers' opportunistic management of earnings.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of accounting fraud on the reliability of profits after the completion of corrections by focusing on the period after the submission of correction reports of companies that corrected their securities reports after accounting fraud was discovered. We tested the effect of accounting fraud on the reliability of profits after the completion of corrections by examining whether the profits of corrected companies and similar companies without fraud are reflected in stock prices in the same way. The results show that if a company is profitable in both years immediately before and after the completion of the correction, the profit is used for stock price evaluation, but the loss is not evaluated positively, as in the case of similar companies without accounting fraud in the past. The results indicate that the correction report restores the credibility of profits, but if the management's subsequent profit management is questionable, even ...

Moreover, there is a positive correlation between the quality of the accruals and the cash flow shock.
Accounting Scandals And Stock Performance: Life After Enron
Journal of Business & Economics Research (JBER), 2011
This paper studies the effects of earnings restatements of selected ten U. S. companies by implementing the event study methodology. The effects are asymmetric across these companies as they are heterogenous in terms of industry classifications. The effects are also conditional upon the fraud and coming-out-clean perceptions about them. Additionally, the effects are dependent on the demand prospects for their products and services.
