EXPLORING LIBRARY ANXIETY AMONG STUDENTS OF UiTM

IJSRP, 2017

The objective of the current study was to examine library anxiety level among Universiti Technologi Mara (UiTM) undergraduate and Postgraduate students. Furthermore, the study also aimed to correlate students' library anxiety with constructs such as age, gender, the highest qualification, the frequency of library visits, CGPA, the field of study, and mode of study, which are believed to influence students' levels of library anxiety. The study used a quantitative, descriptive survey method using Library Anxiety Scale questionnaire to collect data from the respondents. The data through the questionnaire was collected from a sample of 146 respondents of which 56 were male and 90 were females. Meanwhile, 65 of them were undergraduate and the other 81 were postgraduate students studying in 17 different faculties of UiTM. The participants were randomly selected and participated voluntarily in the study. The data gathered through the questionnaire was analyzed using Statistical SPSS v.23 where both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics such as t-tests, One-Way ANOVA, and correlation were used to test hypotheses. The results of the study reveal a moderately low level of library anxiety among UiTM students. In addition, the results of the study indicate that students' demographic profiles did not have any significant effect on their levels of library anxiety.

Library anxiety among university students: A survey.

Abstract Library anxiety has been identified as a contributory factor to poor academic performance among students, and libraries are being challenged to give serious consideration to this phenomenon in order to develop strategies for reducing the problem. This study sought to determine if there were any indicators of the presence of library anxiety among a sample of 150 undergraduates in the faculty of Humanities and Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and some of the factors contributing to this condition. The findings indicated the presence of library anxiety of short-term duration among the students due to both personal and institutional factors. Some personal factors included a lack of the relevant information literacy skills, absence of previous library experience, ignorance of the capability and extent of the library information retrieval systems and confusion when trying to find their way around the library. Institutional factors included the relatively large size of the library, the layout and organization of floors and collection, unavailability of computers and lack of appropriate signage. Recommendations were made to help alleviate the problems that appear to have triggered library anxiety. Keywords Library anxiety, academic library, undergraduate students, University of the West Indies, library phobia, library avoidance.

LibraryAnxiety among Polish students.Polish Library Anxiety Scale (P-LAS)..doc

This paper presents the phenomenon of library anxiety among Polish students and reports on the development and validation of the Polish Library Anxiety Scale (P-LAS), which was created on the basis of Bostick’s Library Anxiety Scale (LAS) and other scales (MLAS, H-LAS, Kuwait-LAS). P-LAS consists of six components: barriers with staff, affective barriers, technological barriers, library knowledge barriers, library comfort barriers and resources barriers. Research in developing this instrument included, as well as deep analysis of the literature, two empirical stages: 1) initial studies (2001), the aim of which was to determine, whether library anxiety occurs among Polish students and 2) later studies on validation of the P-LAS (2009). The initial study concluded that about 40% of the surveyed Polish students may be affected by some form of library anxiety. The general level of library anxiety among Polish respondents, according to later studies, was relatively low – average amounted to 2.35 (low anxiety).

Library Anxiety among International Students

2000

This study of 125 non-native English-speaking students at a Northeastern university investigated the prevalence of the dimensions of library anxiety among this population. Participants were administered the Library Anxiety Scale (LAS). This instrument has five subscales: barriers with staff; affective barriers; comfort with the library; knowledge of the library; and mechanical barriers. Of the five dimensions studied, mechanical barriers, which refers to feelings that emerge as a result of students' reliance on mechanical library equipment (e.g., computer printers, copy machines, and change machines) was the greatest source of library anxiety. Affective barriers, which refers to students' feeling of inadequacy about using the library, was the second most prevalent dimension, having statistically significantly higher mean ratings than the three remaining dimensions. This dimension was followed by barriers with staff and comfort with the library, respectively. Knowledge of the library was the source of least anxiety. Based on these finding, librarians and library educators should be cognizant of the role that technology plays in inducing library anxiety among international students. (Contains 21 references.) Kastamonu Üniversitesi Bilgi ve Belge Yönetimi Bölümü Öğrencilerinin Kütüphane Kaygısı= Library Anxiety Among the Students of the Department of Information and Records Management, Kastamonu University

Kastamonu Education Journal, 2018

It is already known that library anxiety is a common issue which causes many negative effects on students’ success and can even lead to library use avoidance. The main aim of this study is to examine if the undergraduate students of Information and Records Management in Kastamonu University have experienced library anxiety and to determine the level of experienced anxiety. It is also examined whether library anxiety they feel, was related to trait anxiety of those undergraduate students. The department of Information and Records Management in the Faculty of Science and Letters, in Kastamonu University was established in 2006 and began to admit students in 2014, and the current student population of the department (2015) has risen to 78. First, it was measured if there is a relationship between two variables; trait and state anxiety of 57 undergraduate students by Zung Self Rating Scale for depression. Then library anxiety was measured using the Bostick’s Library Anxiety Scale. The survey’s findings showed that about 77 percent of the students experienced library anxiety. Besides it was also found that the students’ library anxiety is independent from their trait anxiety which its level is 40,8.

Relationship Between Affective Tendency, Sex and Library Anxiety Among Undergraduate Students

2021

Library anxiety is a type of fear that is associated with library user who becomes uncomfortable when using the library and its facilities. The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between affective tendency, sex and library anxiety amongundergraduate students and it’s implications for counselling using University of Benin ascase study. A correlational research design was used to select a sample size of 200 from apopulation of 1546 registered users using simple random technique. Data was collectedusing the Affective Tendency and Library Anxiety Scale (ATLAS) adapted from Bostick(1992). The reliability was determined at 0.83 Cronbach Alpha. The results indicatedthere is no significant relationship between affective tendency and library anxiety, whilesex differ significantly with library anxiety. Counsellors should engage students onorientation programmes and give out guidelines on how to study and read effectively inthe library.

Library anxiety: Characteristics of ‘at-risk’ college students

Library & Information Science Research, 1996

This study investigated the antecedent correlates of library anxiety, specifically characteristics of library-anxious students and factors which place them at risk. The following factors were considered: gender; age; native language; year of study; academic achievement; course load; number of earned credit hours; number of library instruction courses; computer experience; study habits; employment status; distance between home and the library; frequency of library visits; and reasons for visiting the library. Students from two universities (n=493) were administered the Library Anxiety Scale (LAS), a 43-item 5-point Likert-format instrument which assessed levels of library anxiety. Data indicated that students with the highest levels of library anxiety tended to be male, undergraduate, not speak English as their native language, have high levels of academic achievement, be employed either part-or full-time, and visit the library infrequently. Recommendations include making both librarians and teaching faculty aware of the characteristics of high-anxious students, as well as increasing the accessibility of anxiety-reducing interventions which focus on developing affective skills. Particular attention should be paid to students whose native language is not English, and library instruction should be introduced at the high school level. (Contains 17 references.) (MES)

Evaluating the psychometric properties of a Malay version of Bostick's (1992) Library Anxiety scale

The purpose of this study was to identify the components of library anxiety using a Malay version of Bostick's (1992) Library Anxiety Scale (LAS) and to examine the effects of demographic variables such as gender, native language, year of study, prior exposure to library services and medium of instruction on the variation in the library anxiety construct. A 46-item Malay version of Bostick's (1992) Library Anxiety Scale (LAS) was tested among 130 medical students drawn randomly from a population of 423 students pursuing their Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. The findings revealed a 3-factor solution which corresponded to the five factors as found by Bostick's (1992) pioneering psychometric measure of library anxiety. The sub-scales of library anxiety were termed barriers with staff, affective barriers and comfort with library technology. The factor barriers with staff explained 19.76% of the variance in the library construct, followed by affective barriers factor explaining 11.55% of the variance and a third factor comfort with library technology explained 10.282% of the variance. The overall scale as well as each of the three sub-scales was submitted to an internal reliability assessment resulting in a satisfactory Cronbach's internal reliability coefficient alpha. Despite the fewer number of sub-scales that were yielded by the Malay version of Bostick's (1992) Library Anxiety Scale (LAS), the translated scale has been shown to be a valid and reliable instrument.

The Relationship between Library Anxiety and Reading Ability

2002

This study examined the relationship between reading comprehension and reading vocabulary and five dimensions of library anxiety (i.e., barriers with staff, affective barriers, comfort with the library, knowledge of the library, and mechanical barriers). Participants were 45 African-American graduate students from various disciplines who were administered the Library Anxiety Scale and the Nelson-Denny Reading Test. A canonical correlation analysis revealed that reading comprehension and reading vocabulary were related statistically significant to barriers with staff, comfort with the library, and knowledge of the library. Results indicate that for African-America female graduate students, reading ability may play an important role in the library context. Moreover, the fact that reading comprehension and reading vocabulary scores predict anxiety stemming from knowledge of the library in the opposite direction to the anxiety induced by affective barriers and comfort with the library suggests that poor reading ability can serve both as a risk factor and a protective factor with respect to library anxiety.
