International News Production and Globalization
2011
A growing number of books have been published in the past decade addressing broadcasters' international news corporation production strategies, directions, challenges, and the content that emerges from the news production. These books have been highly sceptical of previous international communication theories based on a first trend about the emergence of a global public sphere (e.g., Volkmer, 1999): this trend being mainly influenced by Jürgen Habermas' concept of public sphere (1960; 1991) and Marshall McLuhan's (1962) concept of "global village". Structures of International News. A Case Study of the World's Press
1984
An analysis of how 252 newspapers.from nearly 100 Countries covered the assassination, on September 14, 1982, of president-elect Bechir Gemayel of Lebanon was conducted. Thepurpose was to determine whether news reporting in developed nations is different from news reporting in developing countries. Methodology included quantitative and qualitative analyses. A systematic discourse analysis provided explicit descriptions-,of thematic structures, conventional sup9rstructures, local meanings and coherence, style, and rhetoeic. The number of articles, coverage size, and story content in developed and develdping countries were very similar. Less background coverage was provided, however, in-\ newspapers from developing countries. Major differences between first and third world newspapers exist in their different sources of information: the third world press was almost fully dependent on the transnational news agencies, whereas developed countries had many sources. Two major factors explain the homogeneity of the news: (1) an internationally shared system of news discourse and production rules, and (2) the dominant role of the transnational agencies.
Political or economic determinants of news production
This essay will investigate how economical determinants of news production affect and influence the news production process at The New Age newspaper. This paper is founded on the assumption that the reporting of international events by the Macedonian newspaper Nova Makedonija, the Slovenian newspaper Delo, and the Serbian newspaper Politika in the 2013 printed editions, is greatly influenced by the global media. We begin the study by using the method of quantitative content analysis. The data analyzed were gathered over a four-month period from the year of 2013. Global media had heavy direct influence on international reporting only in photographic material of the newspapers Delo and Politika. In the matter of textual material, global media had a small direct role in shaping the reporting of these newspapers. The media coverage of all newspapers was mostly geared toward giving information about events that were happening on the northern continents and regions of the Earth. Military and political conflicts were the main topics of interest for covering the southern parts of the world.
