Perceived parenting, school climate and positive youth development: a predicting model
Journal of Fundamental and Applied Sciences, 2016
Positive youth development is the ideal process of human development that includes five psychological, behavioral, and social indices as competence, connection, confidence, caring and character. The present study was conducted aiming at predicting positive youth development based on perception of parenting and perception of school climate. For this purpose, 400 female high school students of Kerman responded to the scale of parenting style perception, school climate perception, and positive youth development. The results of correlation analysis indicated a positive and significant correlation between school climate dimensions (teacher support, autonomy support and students support), and positive youth development and a positive and significant correlation between perception of parenting dimensions (parent engagement, warmth and autonomy support) and positive youth development. In addition, the results of stepwise regression indicated that parent engagement, teacher support and parent autonomy explain 40% of the changes of positive youth development.
Structural empirical model of personal positive youth development, parenting, and school climate
Psychology in the Schools, 2021
This study tested an empirical model of the relationship between Personal Positive Youth Development (PPYD) and two contextual factors: Positive Parenting (PP), and Perception of the Climate and Functioning of the School (PcfS). The hypothesis tested was that a positive relationship with parents and a positive perception of the school will contribute to the prediction of PPYD. The sample was composed of 1507 adolescents recruited in 10 Spanish schools who were aged between 12 and 18 years and 52% were female. PPYD was evaluated through Dispositional optimism, Self-competence, and Sense of coherence. PP was evaluated through Affect and communication, Autonomy granting, Humor, and Self-disclosure. PcfS was evaluated through School climate, School bonds, Clarity of rules and values, and Empowerment. Previous reliability and validity analyses of the constructs were carried out, and correlational analyses and structural predictions were made. The results show that both PP and PcfS were associated with better scores in PPYD. Also, a positive correlation between those two contextual factors was found. Implications for applied research are discussed.

This study examined self-esteem as mediator in the relations of personal (extraversion, neuroticism) and environmental (maternal, paternal, peer-relationships) variables with domains of positive psychological functioning (PPF) in adolescence (Satisfaction with life, Mastery, Vigor, Social Interest, Social Cheerfulness). We compared one-sided and multidimensional models using a sample of 1193 high school students (592 males and 601 females). We examined variations in adolescent PPF as a function of parenting styles via independent examination of maternal and paternal bonding. Results supported the multidimensional models, which indicated direct effects of personality traits, maternal care and peer relationships, as well as indirect effects, mediated by self-esteem, of all predictors on most PPF dimensions. Overall, our study provided a broader picture of personal and environmental predictors on different dimensions of PPF, which supported the mediating role of self-esteem and emphasized the importance of considering multidimensional models to characterize PPF in adolescents.

Present study aimed to examine the role of school social climate on the adolescent students' basic psychological needs at school. Participants were 303 high school students from İstanbul. School Social Climate scale, Adolescent Students' Basic Psychological Needs at School Scale and a Personal Information Form were used to collect data. Three separate regression analysis were conducted to analyse the data. Results of the first regression analysis revealed that independent variables together accounted for the 20% of the variance in autonomy among adolescents. Age, school and peers found to be significant predictors of autonomy. Results of the second regression analysis revealed that independent variables together accounted for the 24% of the variance in relatedness among adolescents. Teachers and peers found to be significant predictors of relatedness. Final regression analysis revealed that independent variables together accounted for the 19% of the variance in competence among adolescents. Only variable that had significant contribution within the model was peers.
