La culpa d’Aèrope [2011] (original) (raw)
2011, F. De Martino; C. Morenilla (eds.), Teatro y Sociedad en la Antigüedad Clásica iv. La mirada de las mujeres. Levante editori (Bari)
The aim of this paper is to continue and to revise some previous attempts by the author on the subject of incest in Greek tragedy, always taking into account the new theories of incest by the French anthropologist Françoise Héritier. After summarizing Héritier’s points of view, as well as a number of critical comments by Bernard Vernier, the main mythological testimonies on Aerope’s tale are collected and analyzed. Then, the lost tragedies by Sophocles and Euripides on Aerope, Atreus and Thyestes are (also briefly) examined. In the conclusion, I attempt to trace, in the mythological material about Aerope and her complicated adventure, a series of reccurrent motifs and the organizing patterns underlying them.
