Physiognomies of Performance: The Corollary of Representation in the Work of Abdias do Nascimento (original) (raw)
The paper explores the intersection of performance, race, and identity in the work of Abdias do Nascimento, an influential Afro-Brazilian artist. Nascimento's innovative conceptualization of spectacle and performance served as a vehicle for racial activism, critiquing the dominant narratives of racial democracy in Brazil. Through the analysis of his theatrical endeavors, particularly the Teatro Experimental do Negro (TEN) and the periodical Quilombo, the study sheds light on Nascimento's contributions to the discourse on race and blackness during mid-twentieth century Brazil.
