Gender Inequality in Ukrainian Labor Market: Structural Prerequisites and Lasting Stereotypes (original) (raw)
ERN: Other Development Economics: Women, 2013
Abstract
The paper describes structural preconditions and the present state of gender inequality in the Ukrainian labor market. The data on virtual horizontal and vertical segregation of women and their higher load of household chores are adduced. It has been shown that besides objective reasons gender inequality is reproduced by stereotypes which prevalence among individuals of both genders have not almost changed in time. Among them are beliefs about desirability of letting men have workplace, lesser suitability for executive positions and, especially contradictory role expectations that maintain women's double burden.
