GAMIFICATION OF ELEMENTARY MATH LEARNING: A GAME DESIGNER ROLE-PLAYING EXPERIENCE WITH KIDS
Today we can find a lot of experiences that apply gaming principles in the field of education in order to get students involved, engaged, and excited about dry subjects. In general, teachers use game mechanics to promote teamwork, healthy competition, and a safe, fun classroom culture. In this work, we present an experience of gamification to learn fractions in elementary schools. We proposed a role-playing game where kids acted as designers and developers of a serious game, which would aid other children in the learning of fractions. The experience has been very fruitful both for us and for the children. On one hand, they had an exciting experience as game developers, and enforced their knowledge about fractions. On the other hand, we have a game designed by and for children and have applied techniques and activities to be used and refined in future experiences.
Gamified Digital Math Lessons for Lower Primary School Students
2017 6th IIAI International Congress on Advanced Applied Informatics (IIAI-AAI), 2017
This paper presents experiences in introducing gamification to digital lessons for students' mathematics learning in lower primary school. The study was conducted in a second and third grade primary school in Croatia where students (N=59) used tablet computers for a variety of gamified learning activities. Gamification algorithms and extensions were designed and integrated in digital lessons to improve young learners' motivation and engagement in math learning. This paper presents preliminary experiences in applying gamification in lowerprimary school mathematics learning and further explores how the gamification strategy influenced the level of student learning interest. The results show that gamification allows students to sustain more interest compared to the non-gamified approach to learning with digital resources.

Our research was born with the objective of evaluating the level of gamification of high schools in Italy, specifically for mathematics, and the use of the serious game of chess as a resource for learning this discipline. The methodology is a mixed design, based on the combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques. Regarding the quantitative design, the instrument used was a questionnaire filled out by 4845 adolescents living in Italy. The qualitative methodology has focused on the analysis of the discourse of 12 in-depth interviews with mathematics teachers from high schools. Among the main results, we found that teachers, although unconsciously, apply gamification in classrooms (without having had any training about it) and, despite recognizing the mathematical benefits of chess, they do not use this game as a serious game. Our study confirms that gamification deserves more because of the benefits it brings, especially for a subject that scares students and demands greate...
Using Gamification Techniques to Enhance Learning in Primary School
igi global, 2025
This chapter explores the use of a cutting-edge educational approach called gamification, which is becoming increasingly popular in academic settings. While the exact framework of gamification is still evolving, incorporating game mechanisms and features into non-game environments shows promise in enhancing student motivation and fostering active engagement in the learning process. Within the primary education ICT course, deliberate efforts were undertaken to integrate gamification elements into STEM teaching scenarios, algorithmic thinking, and the broader ICT curriculum. These efforts help educators be more creative and support a well-rounded approach to education where gamification is an important focus. The insights and observations in this chapter are collected from classroom experiences and designed to encourage the exchange of ideas among educators for further exploration and development. The challenges within the classroom and the broader education system are multifaceted.
Perception of gamification strategies in Italian secondary school
Gamification is projected as a challenge for innovation in educational contexts. In recent years, ga-mified didactic proposals have been developed to support the acquisition of the curricular contents of the subjects. This research aims to make a diagnosis of the level of application of gamification as a didactic strategy in the area of mathematics, based on the perception of teachers and students of se-condary schools in Italy. A multi-case study is chosen, which combines quantitative and qualitative techniques, with an exploratory-correlational scope. The data was collected through the questionnai-re, completed by 4,845 students, and in-depth interviews with 12 teachers. It was found that the stu-dents hardly perceived the use of games, analogue or digital, by the teaching staff. The teachers indi-cate that they have knowledge of games to facilitate the learning of mathematical concepts. Students do not perceive that gamification didactic strategies are applied consciously. The teaching team claims to use incentives, prizes, and rewards. At the same time, they claim to have little knowledge about gamification and its possibilities. Gamification is attractive as a didactic approach to teaching mathematics. In this sense, the need to offer solid training that establishes the foundations of the ga-me, gamification and the opportunities it offers for the design of learning experiences and game sce-narios is highlighted.
Gamification in 11th Grade Mathematics Lessons – One Possible Interactive Approach
Advances in intelligent systems and computing, 2017
The changes in our world are prerequisites for reforms in the educational system as a whole and in teaching approaches. It is easy to lost interest and motivation when the teacher uses old fashion methods. Some of the students find mathematics difficult and dull. The teachers have to adapt to the high technologies, to look for new educational methods. One of the goals of our study is to analyse new trends in mathematics education. In the focus of the paper we put the gamification in math lessons and their influence on the students' achievements and emotions. The results show that gamification in mathematics lesson with Kahoot! follows to the effective educational process. The students are more motivated and concentrated. They are happy to study mathematics, nevertheless that their interest is not related with mathematics.
The Possibilities of Gamifying the Mathematical Curriculum in the Early Childhood Education Stage
Mathematics
The addition of gamification to the classroom as a methodological tool means that the teacher’s opinion about this has become an inflection point that can affect its use or not in the classroom. In this sense, the main objective of the present article is to explore the opinion of future Early Childhood education teachers on the use of this resource for the development of the mathematics curriculum at this education stage and to obtain an explanatory model that explains it. The design of the study utilized a descriptive perspective and a cross-sectional quantitative focus through a quantitative exploratory study. For data collection, an ad hoc questionnaire was utilized, which was administered to a sample of 232 teachers-in-training. The main result obtained was that the future early childhood education professionals considered that gamification could be a resource for the learning of specific mathematics contents, and this was shaped around a model of two elements. On one hand, the ...
Game-Based Learning and Gamification Technologies in the Preparation of Future Mathematics Teachers
International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM)
Our paper advocates the preparation of future mathematics teachers for the use of game-based learning and gamification technologies. For this purpose, we created a university course that is dedicated to familiarizing the students with basic concepts of game-based learning and gamification and to conveying direct experience with their use. We support the concept and activities in this course by the positive results of the research on the opinions of 115 students. We hope that the positive results and our description of the course will be an inspiration for the broader incorporation of game-based learning and gamification technologies into the training of future mathematics teachers. Limitations of our research are the research sample, we investigated students’ reactions only at the author’s home university. Therefore, in the future, the research could be done with a broader sample and studying more in detail the students’ beliefs related to game-based learning and gamification before...
The Business of Gamifying School Work
Digital Culture & Society, 2021
If we think about the earliest exposure that we, as individuals, have to schedules, routines, effort, and hard work, most probably it is schooling-and elementary education in particular-that first comes to mind. Historically, teachers have tried (based on learning theory or their own intuition) to motivate students by making learning fun; however, more recently, many schools have become fascinated by the digital gamification phenomenon. This work explores the diverse perceptions of the role of this digital gamification among teachers and principals in urban schools in a city in the north of Spain trying to answer why, besides the lack of theoretical foundations, gamification software, hand in hand with the companies behind it, is colonizing classrooms. Three in-depth, semi-structured interviews with principals (who also work as regular teachers) were carried out and the information obtained was coded and represented through hierarchical trees. Then, the data provided by each respondent was compared. Principal's perceptions range from the enthusiasm of having easy access to these "free" tools, to more critical opinions on their usefrom both a political and pedagogical perspective.
Designing gamification for geometry in elementary schools: insights from the designers
Smart Learning Environments
Popularly used in marketing and business, gamification has been gaining interest in educational contexts for its potential to invigorate otherwise mundane or difficult processes. A gamified environment transfers motivational elements of games to learning activities thereby engaging learners in the learning task thus transforming dull classroom environments to smart ones. This paper presents the design process of a gamification intervention in geometry at elementary level, based upon Huang and Soman (Gamification of education. Research report series: behavioural economics in action, 29. Rothman School of Management, University of Toronto, Toronto, 2013) model. We describe how insights from various sources helped us to refine an intervention previously used in one school. The design focuses on gamifying the tangram, an unplugged resource, through incorporating game-based elements of leader boards, points/stars and challenge levels to motivate young learners individually and in teams. ...
