This study aims to evaluate the relationship between Islamic corporate governance (ICG), human governance (HG), and information technology (IT) usage on sustainability reporting (SR) by investigating Shariah compliant companies in Malaysia and Indonesia. Data was collected from 68 manufacturing Shariah compliant companies’ annual reports for Malaysia, and 70 manufacturing Shariah compliant companies’ annual reports for Indonesia, for the year ended 2019. Descriptive and multiple regression analysis was used to analyse the data. The study found that HG Index and IT Usage Index were positive and significantly related to sustainability reporting for Shariah companies in both countries. However, ICG was not found to be significantly related to sustainability reporting for Shariah companies in Malaysia and Indonesia. This could be because the study focuses only on manufacturing companies, and in Malaysia and Indonesia, only about 24% of the companies and 13% of the companies respectively...

This study aims to evaluate the relationship between Islamic corporate governance, human governance and sustainability reporting by investigating Shariah compliant companies in Malaysia. This is very significance as to ensure that the corporate governance mechanism will lead the organization to do more sustainability practises when there is disclosure on Islamic corporate governance and human governance. Human governance is measured by job experience of Board of Directors (BOD), education background of BOD, education level of BOD, age of BOD, gender diversity of BOD, level of integrity, the quantity of training attended by BOD and internal control quality. This study investigates the relationships between sustainability reporting, which comprises economic, environmental, social, Islamic corporate governance and human governance. The study has been using quantitative analyses based on a total of 68 Shariah compliant companies' annual reports for the year ended 2019.Descriptive and multiple regression analyses were used to analyse the data. The study found that, education background of BOD, education level of BOD, age of BOD, level of integrity and internal control quality were significantly related to sustainability reporting. However, job experience of BOD, quantity of training attended by BOD and gender diversity of BOD were found not to be significantly related to sustainability reporting. Islamic corporate governance was also found not to be significantly related to sustainability reporting. Shariah companies should focus on having BOD diversity in terms of age, education level and education background. There should also be an internal quality control system and an ethical culture in place to improve its sustainability reporting. Further, this study contributes to the discussion of Islamic corporate governance, human governance and sustainability reporting. The findings can be used to identify the necessary mechanisms that should be enhanced to strengthen the practice of sustainability reporting. Hence, future research could include more items in Islamic corporate governance on the sustainability practises.

We investigate the impact of sustainability-performance disclosure (SPD) on firmperformance on a cross-industry sample of 71 firms over the period 2011-2018. Wealso compare the relationship between shariah-compliant firms (SCFs) and non-shariah-compliant firms(NSCF). To control for possible issues of unobservedheterogeneity, endogeneity and autocorrelation, we use the system generalizedmethod of moments approach. We found that disclosure of sustainability performanceincreases a firm’s financial performance. Firms which disclose information on theirsustainability practices were found to have higher earnings on assets and equity, which clearly supports the argument of information asymmetry. In the comparison ofshariah-compliant and non-shariah-compliant firms, it was found that SCFs are at anadvantage by being shariah compliant and that disclosure of sustainabilityperformance increases the financial performance of such firms, whereas for non-shariah-compliant firms, the impact was foun...

Good Corporate Governance, Stakeholders, and Sustainability Report Disclosure
Khazanah Sosial, 2023
Indonesia currently lacks a mandatory framework for sustainability reporting, with the existing reporting requirements focusing on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports rather than comprehensive sustainability reporting. This situation has resulted in a significant gap in the disclosure of sustainability reports, as organizations often merely comply with CSR reporting obligations, neglecting broader sustainability considerations. In 2020, challenges in sustainability reporting were evident, particularly in the environmental, agrarian, and energy sectors. The Indonesian Forum for the Environment highlighted issues such as the overexploitation of energy resources for corporate profits and potential biases from the government in supporting energy and manufacturing markets, posing threats to sustainability reporting. This study investigates the influence of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) and stakeholder pressure on sustainability report disclosure. Utilizing a quantitative approach, the research focused on companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) operating in the energy, raw materials, industry, and infrastructure sectors, specifically those actively publishing sustainability reports. The data, extracted from sustainability reports available on the BEI website, underwent statistical multiple regression analysis. The findings reveal a significant positive impact of both good corporate governance and stakeholder pressure on sustainability report disclosure, accounting for 77.5%. The implications suggest that social pressure and GCG practices contribute to enhanced sustainability reporting, urging the government to establish more stringent regulations. Future research recommendations include expanding the sample size and incorporating additional variables.

This research aims to analyse the gaps in a company's annual reports related to the disclosure requirements in the International Financial Reporting Sustainability Standard (IFRS) S1 and compare them to other companies and business sectors in Southeast Asia. This research analyses 224 companies listed on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-related indexes in Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. The assessment was done using a disclosure quality matrix consisting of four criteria: (1) Governance (GOV); (2) Strategy (STR); (3) Risk (RSK); and (4) Target and Metrics (MTR). The results of the study show that: (1) Based on the extent and quality of the disclosures, almost all companies fully disclosed GOV, STR and RSK but not MTR; (2) In general, there is a difference between the extent and quality of the disclosures among countries and industries; (3) From the four clusters formed, 94 out of 224 companies classified in the best clusters, while only 12 out of 224 companies classified in the worst clusters. This research implies that there is still much to be done to improve sustainability reporting, including an effort to reduce disparities in the quality and extent of disclosure between countries and business sectors.
